Across the Board Game Café's Reviews and comments
Got a table for 10 (max COVID table size) right at opening. Food was delicious. Staff were friendly, communicative and attentive. Ambiance was perfect. I appreciated the sound-absorbing panels. And they have games for days - weeks! Will visit there again for sure.
Awesome place to visit with friends. $10 per person and you can play any game you could think of. They have an expert 'Michael' that will teach you how to play a game if you want. Open a bit later than some coffee shops! Good drinks!
This was such a great place. Hundreds of games can be played - but we just went for brunch. The staff was so gracious with us and our grandchildren. The food was great. Soup, salads, grilled cheese for the kids. Nice clean tables and good separation. Well go back for sure.
I work here, so it's biased. The food is way better than a Cafe should be. Fun atmosphere and inspired food. Coffee, drinks, boardgames... you owe it to yourself to come buy and play a board game and try one of the tastiest chicken club sandwiches out there. There are vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options so no one has to starve! Honestly love working here, and the food is pretty damn good.
This was my second time going and we specifically went to play games because the last time was so much fun. The game expert was able to recommend games that we enjoyed and give us a quick rundown on how to play. This time around we didn't have the same rundown but still fun. Just hard to pick up a game and learn to play it on the fly.
Parking is a risky business. It's easier to bus if you can. The only downside to this place is if you order gluten free (the food quality tastes great, but it costs $3 to have two slices of bread. Very expensive). Otherwise this place is great! Lots of games and good customer service
It is a really nice place to hang out. You wont get bored. Definitely a place where group of people can enjoy each other's company by playing games. The service is really good too.
Great quesadilla, cooked perfectly with the spice. Had a fun time with the games, no issues at all. Just a bit pricey for food I will say. But still a great time all around.
I have to be honest I haven't been here before. But our new born is in the NICU and we have been staying at Ronald McDonald house. the amazing owners donated a bunch of board games to the house for families to play. While our daughter fights for her life this has been a much needed distraction. We are incredibly grateful for businesses like this.
To be honest tonight was my first time visiting and I had a great experience other than being neglected by the game master, Charles. My friend who had previously visited twice, told me she’s never had poor service from the game masters. I was very disappointed because Charles introduced himself to my group as our game master, yet avoided my table the entire evening. If it wasn’t for my server and his efforts to save the experience, I would’ve rated this place a 1 star.
Apart from the service, this is a good spot to socialize with friends. Food is a little pricey for its quality but is served in a timely manner.
A great place to spend your time with friends and family! Full of a huge wide variety of games, friendly service and they take the COVID-19 precautions so seriously!
I’d like to thank everyone who works there, it was my first time l, but definitely won’t be my last!
Dill pickle popcorn = great
Cranberry Crush Radler = fantastic
Lattes on lattes = cozy af
Taboo, catan, clue, and everything in-between = wonderfully entertaining
Good food a fun environment and a five star rating for Gus thanks for the help
The food and experience were great but we were not aware of the gaming fee. We were shocked when we got our bill and we were charged $6 each. I understand if it was an insurance for the board games though I just wish it was posted somewhere in the café or on the website. But overall, great experience.
good food, and they have every board game available for play while you eat
The food is good but the place is amazing and very entertaining. It has a huge collection of board games and quite place for everyone. Go there with your family or friends ans enjoy it
Nice and cozy place. Good food, friendly and helpful staff.
LOVE THIS PLACE! Great idea and really great service. The owner is real nice.
Tasty selection of food and beer. Great service and selection of board games.
Very very cool place. Over a thousand games, food, alcohol, desserts, coffee! Very friendly and helpful service. They even have game experts who go around and help explain games to you.
I was looking for a certain game that no other game store in the city had. Across the board came in clutch and I received not only the game I wanted, but the best customer service experience I've ever had. I will definitely be coming back. Thanks Olaf and Across the Board for the assistance as well as the great experience!
Fun experience. So many games to choose from.
It's a nice little place to hang out with friends or break the ice on a date. I had fun hanging out with one of my friends. She and I played the Samurai game because of our interest in similar games to Settlers of Catan. It is definitely worth reserving a spot online. It grants us a 3-hour play time limit for $6. We ordered the banh mi sandwich, which was tasty, but we had so many problems with the kitchen. :/ They didn't have enough baguettes, so one of us ordered the sandwich on a roll. Then the baguette was sliced and served to another table and we had to order the second sandwich on a roll. Then they didn't have enough pork, so one of us ordered it made with chicken instead. It was a light bite to eat, so we ended up ordering a small snack bowl to eat while we gamed. The waiters were a bit slow with service when we wanted to get more food after our initial meal, more water to drink, nd when we wanted our bill. It was just a bad night for them. Will definitely go back for the games though.
Across the board remains one of the best cafe's in Winnipeg to go to. The primary draw is of course the wide selection of board games available. And there are a lot. They have two gigantic walls covered in board game options, so anything from Jenga, monopoly, risk too the game of thrones board game, axis and allies, Catan, and more. Plus amazingly they have a staff member who is super knowledgeable in each game. How he remembers the rules to hundreds of different games Is beyond me!
The wait staff is typically really fast, and was premptively giving us glasses and water. Food came out pretty quick too.
They have an in house beer option, which is a nice light lager, always a plus for a in house beer option.
Also has parking in the back which is rare for a convinient downtown location.
I've been to across the board at their old location probably three or four times, and their new location now three times.
I love this place and the next time some one asks me to go again, of course I will. Highly recommended.
Great place and atmosphere. Service is slow (I understand the place was full, but I don't see how it can take 1.5 hour to make a cassadia).
Amazing! Great cocktails, excellent food, helpful staff and a HUGE selection of games to play
Friendly staff and too many interesting games to pass leisurely time with friends
Early grey Tea & cheesecake, my favorite
Food tastes really good. Pricey food but it was a fun experience because of the games my bf and I played.
One of the most unique places in the city when it comes to enviornment.
Located in the heart of downtown with large clear glass windows where you can see cars going by while surrounded by tons & tons of various different board games that you can try. This place is a endless stream of fun & games along with snack food you can also purchase while playing.
Awesome atmosphere great food and customer
My experience was very enjoyable. Fast service. Great tasting food. Very large expansion of games. Like that you have the ability to purchase some of the same board games on site. The design was very simple and modern.
This was our first time at Across The Board Game cafe and totally lived upto it reputation.
Thousands of games to choose from and good menu items to choose from for our light lunch.
We started with a short game of Monopoly Deal cards game, just to warm up but then weren’t sure how to pick up games. Thats when one of the staff guided us:
1. You either use one of two available iPads to find games (which are alphabetically and theme wise organized), and
2. Ask the staff to help you.
We chose number two option. We told the gentleman at the counter, I think Mike, that we have 45 minutes and we are two players. Within a couple of minutes he brought three game options, explained all three games briefly, then upon we picking one of those games he sat with us for 5-8 minutes to explain the rules in detail and even played a round with us. This is awesome customer service!!
Loved our experience and will definitely visit again with whole family.
So happy and excited that this wonderful place is back and operational.
Great atmosphere and a bajillion games to choose from
Being from the states, I don't make it here as often as I would like to. But every time I visit it feels like home. The tables are large wooden tables - not the cheapo plastic tables that most hobby store use. Making game play that much more enjoyable. Their is adequate space between each table so it doesn't feel like you're cramped on top of each other. Most of the time the staff knows the games and can help explain and set them up! I've bought many games here directly from there store and learned many games I've wanted to play. ....the food is fantastic and not the normal game store food. A great experience anytime.
Great place, fun, good food and great service. Holy recommend!
It was so much fun night with friends
We were fortunate to enjoy a family dinner with our adult children in the summer of 2020. Fantastic food, fantastic staff and a wonderful place to meet and enjoy an evening together. We hope to return to Winnipeg to see them again.
Love coming here to play dungeons and dragons and the food is actually very very good. Especially the non dairy options and chicken sandwiches ... wow that chicken club.
Great espresso. Didn't have a chance to game since I'm a #lonelydriver but beautiful views and super friendly staff.
So much fun! Great concept, great games and great selection of food and drink!
Awesome :). My second time there and I really enjoyed it. Play this if you want two person action. It's like chess in concept, but it takes 5 minutes to learn how to play.
Make sure you get a reservation, especially on a friday or saturday!
Just placed an order for curb-side pick-up. The order was ready quickly, everything was communicated clearly, and along with the boardgame I had ordered, they had thrown in thank you note AND a free cardgame. We will certainly be enjoying both, and appreciate their efforts to continue offering a wonderful service for Winnipeg game-lovers :)
Vast selection of games available. Come with a group of friends, and enjoy the fun and food (A bit pricey; made up for by the environment. Hot buttered rum pictured.
Nice place to spend a time with friend a s learn some new boardgames.
Great, amazing place. Great food. Wonderful selection of games.
Had a fabulous time here. Went with my hubby and daughter. Menu is reasonably priced with good portions. Their staff were so helpful at recommending new games to us to play and teaching it to us quickly so we could play 3 different games is just over 2 hours and have dinner. We purchased a new game they introduced us to as they have a mini retail shop. Very extensive and well organised game library.
I love this place! If you are looking for something fun to do that isn't too expensive go to this place, you do not need to order food to stay and play they charge you $6.00 to play. The variety of board games is incredible. The only downside I find is if you go after dinner especially on a Friday or Saturday night as it is one large open room it tends to get VERY loud and you get a lot of echo. I recommend going with large parties at this time. If you are looking to go with a small group it is quieter earlier in the day.
Amazing service and amazing environment
Only 4 stars because we weren't aware it was a max of 3 hours at our table and we weren't told this upon arriving. There are so many games so grab one and start playing. We had more appetizers than entrees and they were quite good.
Colin came by to show us a new game and we loved it. We'll be going back again. Even bought a game!
Enjoyed another nice lunch/afternoon at Across the Board. We've been there before and we'll definitely be back again. We picked our own games out this time as we knew what we wanted to play already. Lunch was a little late arriving - not too long (maybe 40 minutes), just kind of long enough that we started to ask ourselves 'how long ago was it that we placed our order?'. When the food arrived, without us commenting on it, the server apologized for the wait and offered to waive everyone's gaming fee. Service like that earns you a repeat customer, especially when the food is worth the wait!
We also had an interesting conversation with someone whom in hindsight I think might have wandered in from the street trying to warm up on a chilly day. I'd noticed him talking to himself earlier on, and it sounded like he was giving himself a really enthusiastic pep talk. He never sat at a table, although there were enough empty ones available. He was just kind of wandering around, and eventually he wandered over to our table. Since he seemed interested in the game we were playing, assuming he was a customer I asked if he'd like to play it when we were done. He didn't quite understand the question, and the conversation became pretty confused after that, but eventually we ignored him and he wandered off to another part of the cafe. While confusing, the interaction was harmless and the individual was friendly.
Board games A-Z - fun relaxed atmosphere for all ages - Cappuinco delicious
Such an awesome idea to have a Ames night away from home! Talking about games, there is such a wide variety that makes the night go but so fast! Staff are friendly and the food is delicious
This is a fun date place or group outing. Highly recommend making reservations before going especially on weekends. The service is great. Tons of different types of games to pick from. Haven’t tried any of the food the popcorn smelled amazing when some ordered it.
I’ve been here several times and I always love it! Lots of board games, and the staff are super helpful and can teach you to play games you’re unfamiliar with. They also have great food and drinks. They even have a small section where you can buy games to take home! Definitely going to be coming back here lots
Great concept, and usually a great time. Drink service could be way more attentive based on multiple visits, and food quality is alright at best. Would like to see a better chef come in for better appetizers and finger food. Game experts are always helpful and have great suggestions. Good for group outings!
Great place to play board games
Across the board has such a large selection of board games now! So happy that "nerdy" board games have become so much more mainstream in Winnipeg, and that they have moved to a bigger location to do so!
The game guru guys were so friendly and helpful. I even saw them sit down at tables to help set up and teach rules, which is super great for new people!
All of us had disappointing meals, and the food/drink service was kinda lacking
The staff there are very hospitable and love sharing what their favorite games are and making your experience as smooth and fun as possible.
This is a very enjoyable evening out. $6 a person gets you a 6 person table where you can play any one of the thousand+ games they have. You can also come in just to eat and in that case you don't pay the $6 per person fee. That is only if you're going to play the games.
The food is delicious, if a little bit pricey. However, for a little less than the cost of an evening out at the movies, a group of four can have a lot of fun. It's a great way to spend a chilly Winnipeg evening.
If you have a group of more than two, I would recommend a reservation. They can fill up fairly quick. Especially on the weekends.
The staff here is spectacular. They get you seated and give you a feel for what to expect when you first arrive. This is great if you've never been there before.
The food service is great. They keep your water glass full all night, which you'll need from all the talking and laughing going on. The food is incredibly tasty and priced very reasonably. It is delivered right to your table and comes out quickly considering how many people they have a night.
The best part is the games staff. These people recommend games if you are interested. They also help jumpstart you into a game by explaining and often playing the first round with you. They get you gong quickly (much quicker then having to read all the instructions) and adapt to how quickly your table is catching on.
I highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys board games!
Always great!
Across the Board has a huge selection of games to satisfy all interests and skill levels. They serve good food and offer a wide selection of snacks, sharable plates, mains and desserts to suit all hunger levels. Lots of vegetarian options! The staff here are helpful and friendly staff. They will suggest games and explain how to play them. They also offer a selection of games for purchase. The space itself is bright, airy and open. Great for families, friends and as a date night.
What a phenomenal experience! Board games + food and drink... Fantastic idea! And the venue is awesome! Definitely returning many, many more times in the future. The service was outstanding as well. The board game 'sommelier' is extremely helpful to selecting your next table adventure, as well as helping to explain any rules.
4 stars for 4 reasons. 1) Even during their busiest nights, the staff are very accommodating and friendly. 2) They have an abundance of selection of games here, even duplicate boxes in case some other table has the ones you and your friends want to play. 3) The food here is pretty good, nothing fancy but they make sure it is tasty. 4) If you are unfamiliar with a game, the staff is very welcoming to teach you how to play the games and has patience to help one learn. I left a star out because of the parking, very hard to find parking on a evening or during the weekends, so if you are in the mood to play games with friends, suggest to go down there early or car pool so you only need to find one spot.
Unique place, play provided board games and socialize with friends. You ate charged for food/drinks and time spent at the table (3 hour increments). Had a lot of fun!

I highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys board games!
Packed! Saturday night and this place was packed! Not a table to be found when we entered! This is "gaming" I can support! People everywhere playing board games! Having fun! Laughing! Us? We ordered coffee and treats. Good stuff! We enjoyed being part of the crowd and had a good time. Even though the place was packed, service here was spot on! This was our third time here and I know we will be back. Merci Beaucoup!
Nice place for hanging out with friends and eat. Had so much fun. The food and coffee was good. Big thanks to Ben who helped us a lot for recommending games and explaining the rules. Ben saved us a lot time and the games are amazing!
Lots of fun! Have visited a few times and have bought several new games from their shop as well. A bit pricey to play the games... I feel there should be less/no of a charge when ordering food. It gets to be too tough on the wallet. Otherwise its a lot of fun and their game masters are typically pretty helpful with suggestions and directions.
I've been here a couple times, and it was always a great experience. Big selection of board games, and the staff will help you with the rules if you don't know how to play. It's fun if you don't want to sit at home playing board games.
Absolutely love this place! The staff was super knowledgeable and we left buying the game we played! Highly recommend and will definitely be going back for another date night!
Excellent selection of board games. We played The Hand Of The King and it was in played but excellent condition! For as busy as it was service was good (had my coffee filled up three times!) and the food even better, succulent bbq pork filled rice wraps, salsa with hints of cilantro! We even were able to purchase a new copy of the game we played! Highly recommended!
We showed up on a busy night and they were so nice and accommodating. Awesome selection of games and the staff was really friendly and helped us find what we needed, plus the food and the atmosphere were great. I’ll definitely be recommending it to people!
The food was fantastic, and they have some great vegan options (please add a vegan dessert besides sorbet for the colder months). All staff was pleasant, helpful and enthusiastic. We loved the game selection and the help with the rules. Will definitely be back!
Awesome good way to bring game night back or just to meet friends
Delightful in every way! Fantastic food (highly recommend the Bahn Mi!) and diverse beer selection. When I tried the Butterbeer and didn't like it they insisted I try something else and took it off my bill even though I drank over half of it (HP fan, had to try my best!)
Games expert helped us pick 2 player games, she sat with us and explained them and even got into the competitive mood and teased us about what "boring" people versus adventurous people would do.
Can't wait to go back!!!
I've been many times and it is always a blast. The atmosphere is fun and bright. They have good food options whether you're really hungry, or just want something to snack on while you play games. They have every game you can think of and then some. It's very handy to have the game experts on staff - there is always someone to teach you the rules if you don't understand, or suggest a game if you're not sure what you want. The games are well organized by categories, so it is easy to search if you want to look on your own. The atmosphere is fun and lively and loud in the best way!
The ceiling is high, and the shelves stacked with table top games go up almost all the way. The food is delicious and the drinks are.. interesting. A great place to play with friends on a fun evening. Make sure to reserve a seat, and note that there is a cover charge (5$ I think) per person if you choose to play. The food is also a bit pricey, but nonetheless, I wholeheartedly recommend.
Really great selection of games. Most we chose were pretty tattered though which is to be expected with the general public I suppose. Food is okay, but service was good. Pretty basic atmosphere and you'll see all kinds of people, young and old, date night, group of friends etc... I go out early, like 6pm so it's never super packed.
This is the most wonderful game store that I've ever been to. An amazing selection of games, a bright clean setting, tasty food and drinks, and knowledgeable game masters to teach us new games from the thousand-plus titles one can play. Such a great way to learn new games. I love it there!
Myself and a coworker attended a private function at Across the Board, and had a FANTASTIC time! The service is top notch, not just because the board game experts come to your table to help you with your game selection and how to play, but because they bring themselves to the table as well. By this I mean that they have obviously spent many long hours studying the games they carry, and their passion shines through to make the experience that much better. Olaf is one of the two owners, and his personality has a huge positive impact on a visit to Across the Board. I had been to their previous location once, but their kitchen facilities were smaller, so the food selections, although tasty, were limited. Now however, they are in a much larger space, with a huge kitchen, and they are taking full advantage of it. The food was wonderful! We had a a little bit of almost everything, and each new item was met with enthusiasm and enjoyed by our table. We played three games over two hours, and had fun with each of them. We laughed, chatted, and all of us agreed we will be coming back again, and recommending this place to our friends and colleagues. Thank you Across the Board, you rock!
Neat shop, lots of space for customers, it's in the exchange district so parking is not great. Lots of selection of games.
Really tasty food for snacking while playing or something a bit heartier, good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and friendly staff!
The main reason for going is the boardgames, there are loads of them to suit any group, and if you don't know what to play there are a staff who will help you pick a game and talk you through the rules. They are enthusiastic and friendly, fully recommend this place!
The food is generally pretty tasty and there is a large selection of games. The only complaint I have is that they often seem short staffed. You should be ready to learn short games on your own or play a favourite while you wait for assistance. You may have to wait a while for refills/orders as well. Still - this is a great place to snack and test out some new games.
This place is a ton of fun! My wife and I spent a whole afternoon, but you could easily spend a whole day or more. Not only do they have over a thousand games, they also have experts who will help you find the best games that suit your interests. The food and beer was also good!
Great place for family or a night out with friends... Every game you could ever imagine is available with a game master to offer suggestions for your group. Great selection of beverages; coffees, teas, cocktails and lots of option for the kids. We tried a few things from the menu. All were good, not great. Will definitely go back. Make sure to reserve your table in advance.
Nice to have someone there to help you and always a great place to meet up with friends. Food keeps getting better and better!
I come from a big family.
Long conversations over coffee and tea, listening to music, playing cards or making puzzles which nibbling on popcorn is our family tradition.
I couldnt believe my eyes when I first entered Across The Board. It was like stepping into a dream. The assortment of board games that they hold is simply mind-blowing. The best part is that they have people who are like game masters who walk you through any game you choose and help you learn it! If you are short on time and like me want a game to finish while you are there just ask the game masters - they will pull out a couple to suit your time and taste and you will be off to races.
Their menu is limited but has enough options to choose from. My favorite is their hot beverages and of course popcorn!
They hold tournaments which you can enter in as a group.
Staff is kind, smiling and prompt. There is a per person fixed charge to occupy a table. Parking can be tricky being in downtown but not terrible.
One of the few places other than a restaurant where three generations of the family can all go together and all have a great time!
Do try!

I love this place. I love the amount of games. I love that the staff are knowledgeable and take the time to teach the games to your group. Five stars for this.
I also love the gender neutral bathroom, and I'm so proud that you've been able to move to your new awesome space.
But. The staff NEED to learn how to be servers. Every time I go there, I have to beg for cutlery (one spoon was carried from the kitchen and handed to me). And napkins. And salt. And creamer. Everything is an afterthought. There is a proper order for things to arrive at the table, and when to bring water, and when to fill glasses, etc. (My 16 year old fast-food employee daughter noticed it too.)
They are a great boardgame place. But the food service could be SO much better.
Owners, if you're listening, I'll keep trying! Please consider making this change, I will happily amend this review. Please train your staff appropriately? Or hire one amazing person/supervisor with lots of solid serving experience to teach everyone else?
We had fun! It was our first time to visit this place and the experience we had was superb. There are lots of games to choose from. Like a library of games. I think we had like 5 games in total. We didn’t get food but for what we smell what their cooking, lol i think it’s a good tasty food. Staff were so nice they even recommended some games to play. Overall, great time spent, and you’re allowed to be loud. 😂we’ll come back again 😊
Pretty awesome place. Parking is tough in the exchange. Different kind of menu choices (no greasy food as you don't want to ruin/stain board or card games). Nice servers. Enjoyed it immensely.
For my first time here I did not know what to expect. We ordered food and drinks right away and Sean sat down with us and helped us decide on a game by asking what we were interested in. He brought over four or so games that he suggested. When we picked one he thoroughly explained it and helped us get set up. He was always around to help us whenever we had a question. Food was very good and the game lasted us the evening. I really enjoyed the space and the unique experience. I can't wait to go back. Thanks Sean!
Amazing place in the most beautiful part of the city.
You'll enjoy a very wide selection of games to play, food options are really good we ordered wraps and they were delicious. You can also get snacks like popcorn. The boardgame shop is also very tempting and the prices were not outrageous compared to card game shops in the city.
You'll love this place.
The food is pretty pricey, but the $6-to-enter fee isn't. It's a really nice place to hang out with friends in a comfortable environment and just play games. If you don't know the rules, or if you want a recommendation, the staff will always be able and willing to help.
A great place for a coffee in the Exchange. Helpful staff are there as well to recommend games to play based off your preferences. Will check it out again.
