Japanese Village Restaurant's Reviews and comments
Great food, our cook had his own jokes and showed us the Japanese choo choo train lol. Food was great, ambience is also great. Wheelchair accessibility is great too as they have an elevator for people who can't make the trek down the stairs. Tea is the Yamamoto tea, very close to barley but more smoother. Steak and chicken cooked to perfection.
Japanese Village is one of my father-in-law's favourite restaurants. We like to take him whenever possible for special occasions. Not only is the food always delicious, the talented chefs provide an impressive and memorable performance as they cook. The service is top notch. Highly recommend.
I have been there a few times for special occasions.
It is a bit pricey but you have to look at what you're getting. Everyone sits around a big grill, while a chef cooks your meal, including veggies.
While he cooking, a waitress brings you a beverage, then soup, salad and a rice bowl. The sauce that goes on the rice, is omg good.
There is so much food for the listed price except for adult beverages. Then they top it off with a small bowl of ice cream.
You get great food and entertained by a chef.
Great night out.
Fun and engaging teppanyaki restaurant. Cook was very sensitive to my party's dietary needs, and the gentle ribbing and jokes were greatly appreciated by all. Highly recommend!
I loved Japanese Village! I went to celebrate my friend's birthday and the staff make you feel like you sre at home. They are kind and following the rules regarding covid-19. The food is delicious and it is prepared in front of you. The menu is diverse - they have especially hot food - and the price is fair. I am looking forward to go there again!
I have gone to this restaurant since I was in a baby car seat. It is by far the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to in my life. I consider it to be my favorite restaurant of all time. Any major event is celebrated here. I cannot recommend this establishment enough. The owner and all the staff are super friendly and know what they are doing.
5 stars all around.
Here is the breakdown of our visit:
•Covid precautions, top marks all around.
•Staff friendliness and efficiency, everyone was great. Very sweet to our very excited 7 yr old grandson.
•Food is where the 3 star rating comes in. The appetizer shrimp were so over cooked they were tough and rubbery. My halibut was put on at the same time as a NY steak (that was requested to be medium) and my halibut was taken off at the same time. It was very overcooked, not as bad as the shrimp at least, but still not succulent as it should be.
•The Teriyaki steak and chicken our group has was good.
•Vegetable were very good.
I missed the showmanship of the chef's, with salt/pepper shakers and flippers being tossed around and clanked on the stations. I noticed none of the Chef's were doing this, they all made an onion train locomotive. I don't know if it is a change made as a result of Covid but it was a fun tradition.
So for the price paid we were sorely disappointed.
It was a lovely experience. Shots, mixed drinks, and lots of rum. Best birthday ever. No pic didn't think of that while enjoying life. Next time I promise.
Incredible food. Incredible service. Incredible show. Everytime.
That sesame steak sauce is infamously recreated throughout the city, but unmatched to the original and best!
Til next month!
Great lunch. Tea was great. Tempura appetizer was light and delicious with a great dipping sauce. Mushrooms were excellent with great flavour. The shrimp was delicious and cooked perfectly. The best part by far was the scallops... holy were they to die for. I cannot wait to be back!
Been going here since it opened . It has always been amazing. Whenever I want to impress a tourist or visiting friend ... I take them here. And I always lie to the restaurant, and tell them it's someone in my party's birthday, just to enjoy the singing, and the embarrassment they get !! I always order the shogun !!!
Fun novelty dinner experience... you're paying for the performance, not the food... you will be eating half of it cold. Not very veggie friendly, excellent steak sauce, cheap drinks...
Exceptional dinner experience. Lovely staff preparedness. Exceptionally skilled customer / chef interaction as cook-at-table experience. Food menu has satisfying options for a pedestrian palette like mine, as I do not enjoy any seafood options. The steak was cooked precisely to my request. The chicken was done well, juicy and tender. The sauce on any bits involved, was exceptional.
Read their menu! Know their costs match very well with the amount of food they provide. Please give this place a try if and when you can.
This was a family event, and the best parting lines I can leave here, "The happiest mouth is the quietest." I didn't speak a word.
Our chef was super funny and very personable. The food was also AMAZING. I had a really good time.
For 30 yrs I've been going here always love both the experience and the amazing food ~ that ginger steak sauce is crazy good! Cool sharing the larger tables and meeting interesting new people. Took our boys here for the first time tonight and both couldn't stop talking about the great food prepared right before thier eyes and many laughs provided by our hilarious chef, I highly recommend if you've never been.
This is always a fun place to eat. The chefs interact with you and your party having fun and laughing with you. I would recommend this for anyone who is willing to try some new foods and wants to have something delicious too!
Went there for my birthday with my wife, the staff are very friendly, fantastic atmosphere, and amazing food!
Absolutely delicious food, fun times, the cook had a great personality and they even gave me a photo of us all for my birthday!
I have been going to japanese village for many years. The food is great but I truely missed going for lunch there through covid. I recently tried the keto diet and found that most of the menu, veg, meat, seafood and even sesame steak sauce was a go for keto. It's was a great night out. Higher prices but same delish food.
Very Covid cautious. Missed having my dishes removed in a timely manner and having to hand them down to the end to get taken away.
Food was amazing. Enjoyed the chef! Sadly this is a better experience without all of the plexi.
Outstanding Japanese restaurant. We ate in the Izakaya Lounge for dinner. Kids loved the bento boxes, while adults enjoyed dumplings, sake, and soup.
I especially love how quiet and cozy it is. The staff were perfect, and the food even better. Highly recommended.
It's OK for small gathering but prefer Sen on fort st.
Top quality fresh food, absolutely wonderful service, very good ambiance, clean and neat. Great chef with a great sense of humor. So far it is one of the best restaurants I have been to in Victoria. Reservations are recommended. Definitely worth a shot!!- Happy and satisfied customer.
Great service. Friendly staff. Little experience with everything going on that is fine. worth it for a treat one in a while
Had a great time with friends around a table where they cook everything right infront of your eyes! They also have a couple tricks they toss in to make it a little more entertaining to watch! I would highly recommend if you are looking for a different kind of dining experience!
We love Japanese Village! The food and service are fantastic. Wonderful place for a birthday party or special event. Beautiful space with welcoming people. Highly recommend!
Amazing food and amazing entertainment while they prep the food!! Great portions you never leave hungry!!
I enjoyed eating this restaurant, the food was good and I also impressed the way they prepared the food. They cooked the front of us.
Teppanyaki. A little pricy, but you get a ton of food and the chefs are entertaining. Great place for a group. I've been here many times and it's always very good.
Entertainment dining is usually not my cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoy Japanese cuisine. This restauraunt is great if you have a group of friends to enjoy it with. The dim yet classy atmosphere lends itself to good conversation and could be romantic if not for the group focus. Expect some amount of noise from entertainment at other tables and the grill.
The service is excellent and the food is good. Pricing reflects the atmosphere and crowd. I'd come here with some good friends for a fun night.
Best entertainment with dinner around. Very good food with good sized portions. This is our regular birthday place.
Me and a few other people were at this restaurant earlier tonight, that’s Friday, December 4, 2020. The service was outstanding, one of the best services I’ve had in my life. I asked for a substitution for a drink, and the waitress went out of her way to accommodate my request. Some would even say she had moxie. The chef who made our food was hilarious and the food was amazing. Overall, this is hands down, the best restaurant experience I’ve ever had. To anyone who is considering eating here, I would say do it. The prices may be a little high, but it is worth it, no doubt about it.
A lot of fun and so delicious! A great dining experience
Always a great time. Food is delicious and you always leave full. The steak sauce is amazing!
Looooove this place. Love the ambience and the food is delicious. They have chefs who cook right in front of you :)
Didn’t know what I was walking into, it’s definitely an experience more than a traditional restaurant. Service was great, and the value in their inclusive multi course menu was great. Very cool vibe with tables surrounding the server and chefs with great mood lighting.
The food here is really amazing. It’s fun to watch them cook the food it’s very entertaining. I had a tropical punch that was good. They are very polite and funny. Really amazing 10/10
Fun atmosphere and amazing food
Always a wonderful experience there. The food is delicious .
Still as wonderful as ever. Great to see them surviving through the flood and covid. Food is great with the sesame sauce to die for.
They take reservations for large groups but you will only be seated of everyone in your group is there. The food is good, a little expensive for lunch ranging from $15-$25 per person. Not wheelchair accessible, steep stairs leading from street level down to the restaurant.
Truly amazing food and talented shefs that cook right in front of you. Our favorite tepan grill.
What an awesome experience ! We had an entertaining chef and the food was so good. We had dinner here to celebrate a special event and they had an option to get pictures taken with covid friendly props. Great service as well. The price was high but for such a special night out and for such a memorable experience it's worth a return visit at another special time.
Great atmosphere, entertaining chefs, exquisite food.
Excellent halibut and shrimp. Substantial meal. Interesting to watch. Worth checking out.
Never a let down, we eat here every time we are in Victoria! Great food, and good show even with restrictions. Would recommend!
The wait to serve was so longggggg (30mins)
But the soup was flavourful :)
Always a lot of fun to go out for dinner at Japanese Village and always great food.
The tepanyaki cooking experience isn't quite the same with plexiglass separating patrons from the cook and it's a little awkward to converse within your group to friends thru the plexiglass. That said the food was very tasty and we'll presented. Always a little pricey it was disturbing when paying the bill, the only option for tipping was 25%. When queried the waitress was able to pull up a more standard tipping menu screen with more options.
Omg THE BEST FOOOD EVER ! My fav place for sure !
Awesome service especially since we had a pretty rowdy 4 year old little boy with (my sweet grandson)
Fun atmosphere. Can be cool for first timers to watch the "show" as the chef Cooks in front of you. The food is so so although the sesame sauce is quite good. Prices seem to keep going up despite portions being the same. Price is not worth the value. I would recommend going at lunch since it is half price and typically less busy.
Nice out of the way Japanese restaurant. Service and staff were good and the food was excellent.
It’s not just amazing food- it’s an amazing experience.
It’s mesmerizing for all ages to watch the chef prepare the meal right at your table. Very fun and memorable place to dine. We always take out of town guests here.
Certainly a place to visit for the atmosphere as the food is prepared right in front of you. However the quality of the food is only mediocre. We also noticed that parties of more than one household shared single tables although this is against the current Covid rules.
I've been going here on and off for probably 35 years. Nothing has changed in that time! The food is always good and pricing is OK for what it is. Meals start about $25 and go up to $50 for a steak and seafood combo. The food being cooked right in front of you can be fun if you happen to get a funny cook (sometimes they're hilarious and sometimes they struggle a bit to entertain you) . These are shared tables of 8, so if you're a group smaller than 8 and don't like strangers beside you, maybe find somewhere else to eat. I've never left hungry! Parking is via paid lots beside the restaurant or street parking (paid during the day, free in evenings). Restaurant is downstairs (below ground, so if you like eating with a view this place isn't for you) but it's quite well marked. Suitable for larger groups (the place is quite large) but I'd assume you would need to book in advance.
Love this place!! Great food and great service. Our favorite place to go when we are in Victoria.
We had two tables with back to back chefs. Our chef was an extrovert laughing and joking with us. Put on an excellent show interacting with all sitting around his grill. The other table was quiet and subdued and I felt that they got ripped off. They were looking over at us wondering "why are they laughin' so loud'. It really depends on the chef and I think it should be a prerequisite for them to be extroverted.
Japanese Village is good but not great. They are trapped in a time warp and one senses it walking through the door. The food is tasty unfortunately I had better at other teppanyaki places in other cities. Many at our tables thoroughly enjoyed their appetizers. I did not have one but will definitely try a couple since I am returning a week from now for another birthday party. I would still recommend them since we all had a very enjoyable time.
We ordered some food last night. It was delivered on time, the food was warm and tasted amazing! We will order again! Thanks Japanese Village!
This isn't as showy as other Japanese grill places I have been to, they aren't throwing shrimp across the room etc, but the food was amazing. The Filet mignon was so good. And of course the grilled veggies were good as well. Many of the people in our group loved the sauces, I personally thought they were a bit salty. A solid tasty place to go eat, and a fun place for a big group.
Words cannot describe how much fun I had for dinner here. The atmosphere was amazing and the chef was hilarious. The food was perfect. The service was top notch. Would totally come here again. Steak was cooked just the way I like it and the sesame sauce that went with it was delectable. The halibut was out of this world. And Not too pricey.
Great food. Great chef. Went for my birthday and didn't know until we received the bill that they charge you for them to sing happy birthday and another 4 dollars for a printed picture(a good one at least). Unpleasant surprise when looking at the check. Overall it was a fun experience.
Great 3 course meal, with soup and dessert.
The place is so much fun-and the food is great!
Enjoying the show watching them prep and cook, as did the kids. No kids prices makes it very pricey, but food is excellent
Decided to bring myself here for dinner while my kids were with their grandparents and I was pleasantly surprised! I just chose randomly based of some reviews of restaurants in Victoria and got more than I expected, for sure! It was fun to sit with some strangers and watch as our chef prepared our food for us. I will definitely bring my husband here for a date night one of these days but might not have the kids join us any time soon as it is a little pricey if you've got a whole team to feed.
Great atmosphere, food prepared at your table. Always delicious.
The experience was great - good ambiance, really entertaining chef. The food was... Pretty good. Some of it was better than others. The salad wasn't really special, and the dressing on it was fairly blah. The ice cream at the end wasn't particularly good either. Be aware that the miso soup option is extra. The chicken teriyaki was pretty good though, as was the shrimp.
A delicious meal and a wonderful show! Guests sit amongst each other around a griddle and a skilled chef puts on a fun and exciting show as he cooks your dinner. The food is fantastic and reasonably priced, and you get a lot of it. Be sure to ask for the steak sauce on your rice!
Love it here. Go every year for my birthday. They used to offer a free second bowl of rice but the next table asked and was told no so I didn't bother asking. It's my favourite though. Reserve or you have to eat in the next room without the show. Same food but less experience. I skip lunch that day to have more room for the yummy food.
I have been here twice and enjoyed it both times. Food is amazing, the steak sauce is so good ! I do not eat mushrooms of any kind ever...until I come here lol. I recommend the seafood Shogun meal. Halibut, salmon and prawns. Service can be a little hit and miss but nobody is perfect. I love the over all atmosphere of the restaurant and enjoy the interaction with the cooks and the others you are seated with.
Visiting from the mainland with my mom, we came to Japanese Village with two clients with mobility issues. We hunkered down the long staircase and were immediately greeted by staff attempting to assist her clients with their elevator located in the back (if you have mobility issues they are beyond accommodating), and if you call ahead they will meet you where their elevator is located
(Entrance to the elevator is in the parking lot side, not street side)
Our Chef was a very light hearted individual who had a clear passion for entertaining with his art of craft, and his jokes left us in tears. The dim lighting gives a intimate feeling of status, as well community as the many people around, and variety of conversation are apart of what bring the place to life. The staff are wonderfully attentive and are very intuitive to their guests, and very warm and delightful to talk to.
The food was beyond amazing, try the Shogun Special! I was in love with their Hot Sake, and Chi Chi.
Such a delightful experience, and can honestly say I will be back, and I'm bringing all my friends and family with me!
Have to try!
The dinner at the Japenese Village was very a delightful experience. The cook we had at our table was not as entertaining as others I saw around the room but he did cook a meal. The sauces were delicious. There was a lot of food. It seemed like you spent pretty much an entire hour eating. The meal was expensive but worth it. I wish our cook had been more into the performing though.
This place is soooo good! As long as you are wanting a very hot meal with food cooked just right, sit in the main restaurant area where they cook your food right in front of you with a little bit of entertainment. The cooks are happy and funny to add a smile to your meal. I wouldn't suggest eating at the front bar area though if you want the same foods. The one time we tried this, the food was over cooked and not hot. Maybe a one off??? Overall I give them 4 out of 5 starts. I will definitely continue to take my family and friends here!
Had the New York steak and extra mushrooms, delicious as usual and always an enjoyable experience.
Always great food and atmosphere.
Celebrated my Birthday here last sunday with my family and they made it very special by surprising me with coming as a group and sing a birthday song, food are all great & reasonable price, plus we got a souvenir photo for only $5 extra, worth to celebrate a special occasion, highly recommended, will come back again for sure & not to forget the best chef who served us & the waitress too!👍👏😊
For all the hype that this establishment receives it is average at best. With food being prepared right in front of you, you would think it would be piping hot! The best thing is the "steak sauce" that they put on the rice. Order a bowl of rice with it on top and you can achieve the entire culinary experience.
The chefs and staff were wonderful. Food was plentiful and delicious. We didn't feel rushed even on a very busy night (Valentine's Day). Will definitely return.
Very pricey for what you get but it's about the show. The food is excellent as well! Unfortunately on our visit we had a fellow who struggled with English and his presentation wasn't so good. Luckily the chef beside us was fabulous so we got to hear the whole spiel before our chef arrived. The service was quite slow as well as it took about 20 minutes for our chef to start.
Always fantastic! Chef was magnificent, he was full of surprises and really witty.
Very friendly and attentive staff. Good food. Liked the ambiance Would definately come back. Had the steak and chicken teriyaki dish with a assorted tempura starter. To drink I had the unfiltered Sake. I had asked for medium rare steak but it was on the rare side which I didn't mind. Sake was delicious. They also served a tasty soup and a small salad. I sat in the lounge to eat as I was hungry and was a 15 min wait for a table. Could have moved but it was quiet so I stayed.
Great experience! The Chef we had was very quick on his feet and we had a great time listening to his clever jokes and mild insults (we encouraged him). I think people leaving negative reviews take themselves too seriously, I haven’t laughed that hard in ages.
Incredible meal and all of the entertainment you would expect in a shogun teppanyaki style restaurant. Can't decide if it like the sesame or ginger sauce better. Everything was fresh and perfectly cooked in front of us. The service staff and chef were both excellent and had a great sense of humor.
The chefs are always entertaining and the food is great. I love how they prepare it for you on the huge cooktop. The Hibachi Shrimp is my favorite. I wish I could buy their Ginger Sauce. Soooooooo yummy.
A long time regular here and never let down. Staff are awesome. The food is a staple in the city with the steak sauce often being the subject of conversation. Tried sushi a couple time and no surprise that it isn't their forte. The rest is superb.
I'm giving this place 3 stars for 2 reasons . I've had Teppanki several times and the chef would do more then one entertaining fun thing while cooking your food. . Well this chef did one and it was the Onion stacked with smoke coming out it like a train . That's it . He was funny only because the young lady sitting at our table was hitting on him . .... We had a more fun and entainment from her group that was sitting at our table . Second thing was the food was extremely bland . I ordered the filet mignon and my boyfriend had the chicken and shrimp. His Chicken was good but the rest. . . . Blah . Did not like the Soup either . . . . On a positive note the place had a nice atmosphere....
Solid as always. Dinner prices are a bit steep in my opinion. The sauce is great but overall taste is nothing exceptional. You're paying for the great experience though. Worth a visit.
Love this place. Nice atmosphere, great food, chef's are incredibly talented, and they are incredibly efficient with their serving without leaving you with the feeling of being rushed along! A great spot for a nice, quaint place for as regular lunch or for a special occasion!
The food is absolutely delicious. Being underground is cool because it doesn't feel like you're in Victoria anymore. The menu isn't that big, not like a sushi place. It is also priced pretty high, but you typically get more food than you expect, and the staff puts on a good show.
Hands down the best restaurant experience ive ever hand. Got diner with a show cant complain and the food is absolutely delicious
Food was good, show was fun!
Beware when drinking cocktails booze was on top ( mix before you drink )
Very fun experience. The chefs are very good entertainers and make the whole dinner experience enjoyable. The menu has a variety of choices and each meal comes with something to start and some icecream for desert. This place gets very busy so I would recommend reservations to garuntee a spot.
Always a great meal had by everyone
Every time we go here the food is great and the chef's that I have got have had a great sense of humour. It makes the whole experience more enjoyable. I recommend it to anyone.
I went there with my friend on the weekend May 15. Food was delicious, great service, cook was entertaining. I had a New York steak, loved sesame sauce and the sauce for rice. We had a lot of fun, enjoyed the whole experience! I would go back anytime!
Always a fun place to go. You can go in a group or reserve and sit with other people you don't know. Food and service has always been good. Chefs are excellent and funny. Birthday singing hasn't changed but it doesn't need to.kid friendly
First time visiting, my wife and daughter decided to have Thanksgiving here instead of the more traditional ways of having dinner. What a great experience, friendly, polite and helpful staff, Our Chef Andrew was amazing, really did a fabulous job at preparing a delicious dinner. Thank you Andrew, we'll see you again :o)
This restaurant has been around for ages and is the go-to spot for work group lunches. Food is cooked in front of you with flair, but feels like the menu hasn't changed at all. If you haven't gone, you should give it a try. If you aren't a very large group you will be seated with other people.
We only had 4 hours to spend in Victoria and knew we wanted to try it before even leaving Florida!!! Worth the wait, chef was funny and fantastic too! Loved the atmosphere.
After being a regular at the Calgary location, this place is disappointing. The price of the entrees are $2-$3 more expensive and smaller portions. The steak sauce isn’t as good. They charge you for extra rice, whereas in Calgary it’s bottomless. Also, they do no entertainment. I’m used to them doing flames and knive tricks. And playing music. Only reason I’m giving it a 3 is because the food was still delicious and the chef and staff were very friendly.
Ok. If it's your first time, you can let the lacklustre knife show by the chefs, the cheesy jokes by the same chefs and customers, the huge uptick in price point, the squeezed in seating, the need to feel involved with the strangers beside you, slide. Why? Because the first time it's a great experience.
But if you've been there more than once, the sheen kinda wears off. And you get cynical.
Regardless, they do great business and I can't fault them for being busy.
Really great food, great entertainment if you sit in the regular restaurant rather than the lounge. The food is slightly over priced in my opinion (even their lunch menu, which is technically less than their dinner menu). Of course, their steak and ginger sauces are to die for!! But again, the cost of the food is too much for what it is, and I'm really bummed they got rid of their sushi bar.
It’d been 20 years since I last ate at a Japanese Village (in Calgary) and this was exactly as it was back then. (they have several locations) Decor is the same (dated and old), service is the same (prompt, regimented and mostly friendly) and the menu is basically the same. Their go-to main meal is fried onion and zucchini, mushrooms, tiny shrimp appetizer, bean sprouts, 2 sauces (ginger and steak sauce ) and then whatever main “meat” be it steak, chicken, shrimp or fish. Ice cream to finish. The “meat” portions are large so full points there, and the chefs excel at cooking the meat exactly as it should be. But I would have thought they might modernize after all these years - er, decades. Its not cheap either, budget $40 without drinks, tax and tip.
Families with small kids will enjoy themselves - it can be a fun first date spot, but foodies will be left wanting for more.
Friendly, great service and amazing food!
What an amazing time! The young "show chef" was highly entertaining. The food just kept coming. I always had a fresh beverage. There was six birthday parties the night we were there, I found it added to the fun and excitement. I would definitely go again, although I say the price range is higher than mentioned on the Google site. More accurate would be $20-30 for "Complete Dinner".
Excellent food and atmosphere. Best meal of 2weeks on the road. Definitely need to make a reservation due to reduced seating.
Went for a family birthday dinner. Staff were pleasant and accomodating. Chef was hilarious and cooked us an expert meal. We had our 2 small children (under 2) and it was great for them too
I had a wonderful time at The Japanese Village, celebrating my birthday. It was my first visit but it certainly won't be my last. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. Definitely worth every penny.
It breaks my heart that Japanese Village doesn't get the reviews that it so desperately deserves! Japanese village is by far my favourite teppanyaki place in B.C. I've tried a ton of different ones in Vancouver and I haven't been able to find one that steps up to my flavour standards like Japanese village. Firstly and most importantly, the steak sauce is a must try!
My experience was very good, their steak was delicious and cooked well. Bargain for the money you spend their.
Loved the atmosphere of the place, very attentative staff. Food cooked and served right infront of you buy a talkative and amusing chef. Smelled and tasted great! Leftovers put in the box with care. Great for special occasions, reservations definitely recommended.
Nice cozy place to have dinner with family or friends. They cook food right infront of you at the table. Chefs are too witty and makes you feel very comfortable. I loved their drinks especially pina colada.
Great service, great drinks, and amazing food. I'll definitely be back
Want good food and entertainment this is the place for you. The cook comes to the table cooks eveything right there all while cracking jokes and making small talk. The food was good the only reason i only gave 4 stars is the resturant is starting to show its age and the steep stairs would be hard for the elderly or disabled to get to the restaurant
Amazing food and excellent service. Definitely recommend the hibachi experience!
We discovered this place about 20 years ago and it immediately became our favorite restaurant! We tell everyone we hear is going to Victoria about it. They will often go for lunch and return for dinner! There is no place quite like it. Yes, there are other Japanese restaurants that cook the meal in front of you (we try them wherever we go) but Japanese Village has the best recipes by far! They also serve sushi.
Not as good as I remember. Steak and chicken were both overcooked. Everything was very salty! Cook and show not exciting compared to past visits here and to Kobe in Vancouver. Servers very nice, friendly and attentive. Love the spimoni ice cream at the end!
Some of the best food in town. Good quality. Great service. Worth visiting.
Excellent food! They have a great menu for everyone's tastes. I'm pretty picky and they had good food for me. The chefs are funny and talented.
This place is alright.
Lots of people seem to rave about it but I don't get what all the hype is about. It's average food. They cook it all in front of you which is cool, but I would rather go to a regular Japanese restaurant where they don't cook in front of you and get better food.
It was still good food, but nothing special. If I'm going out for food I want it to rock my socks.
The best!!! I usually go to the keg for birthdays and formal events. But I found a new favorite place too EST now. And they cook right at your TABLE. ITS THE BEST!!!
Came here for my birthday and overall it was a amazing experience. I had never been to teppanyaki before and the chefs were hilarious one had red trim and the other had green on his uniform and my friend made a super Mario reference and the green chef was like "more like the power rangers" it was great also the food was perfect.
The food is to die for, tender cuts of steak, beautiful tasty vegetables and the sauce... OMG the sauce. To have that recipe, I may sell a limb haha. The chef was funny, personable and absolutely fantastic. He just topped off the whole night. Will definitely return when we are in Victoria again.
Excellent! Fabulous food, great experience! Clean, friendly staff! Top drawer!
Great food. Lunch prices reasonable. Tepanyaki “show” might be fancier at dinner but still good food. Only took off a star bc they pack you in like sardines. (I know that’s typical but it’s tough!)
Delicious, fun, but expensive.
Awesome food and great staff. Really enjoyed the great job done by the chefs and the servers are really nice and attentive! Can't wait to go again!
Ok Japanese food. Although has great reviews on Google, we did not like that much. We prefer more traditional japanese food and the dishes where not well prepared. Even the rice was not as tasteful as we usually have in others good japanese restaurantes. So, despite the fact that it's a nice place, the food was not very good in our opinion.
The Japanese Village is the go-to restaurant for celebrations in my family. The food is excellent, the cooks are wonderful, and the atmosphere is lovely. The sesame (steak) sauce is simply unreal, and I have a particular soft spot for the miso salad dressing.
I definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for great Japanese food and a unique dining experience.
Great food. Great service. Same ol' jokes with a couple new ones by the chef. Prices have increased 30% since I was last there.
The atmosphere is fun with the chef preparing in front of you. The food was tasty, but in my opinion a bit on the pricey side.
We enjoy going and watching the show, every time we go to Victoria it's a must stop!! Food is wonderful and who could miss out of that steak sauce.
Never have we had a bad experience.
My family loves this place. I would recommend going for lunch but be prepared to spend a lot more if you go for dinner.
P.S. they also do takeout if you order before 11.
Great food, great experience, i recommend it anytime everytime. If your looking to take a date out for a fun experience over a meal this restaurent is top of my list!
A very interesting and enjoyable experience. You can't be seated until your entire group is there, so plan accordingly. Good food and entertaining cooks.
In the past this would have easily been 5 stars. However.... It has changed drastically in the past few years. The extra rice is no longer free and they CHARGE to sing you happy birthday. Yes you read that right, they charge to sing ymto you. The food was alright, it used to better and bigger portions, all the while prices have gone up. There also isn't as much of a "show" as they used to do. It's a shame as there aren't other teppen yaki restaurants here. It's really too bad as they used to be my fav :(
Very good food. Awesome cooks. Would have gave 5 stars but Front desk lady is very rude when you are even 1 minute late for reservation though. So don't be late lol
It is very fun to have a chef cook in front of you, however, the food is nothing japanese. It is very north American..salmon tastes very pale and the oyster only tastes the breading..
Oh man, where to start? First, this place has been around for a long time, so you know they're doing something right. Many of the staff have been there for years, so the place has a great family feel to it.
The staff are efficient, friendly and prompt. Zero complaints.
Shungo, who mans the sushi bar most nights, is wonderful. He's a master of his craft, and when given creative license, he will come up with the most delightful dishes! He's engaging, fun, and has flawless customer service. He also makes an elegant orange and coconut creme dessert that is simple and yet magnificent. True to the aesthetic of Japanese fare.
I also had the chicken yakitori while I was there and whoa mamma is it good!
I look forward to frequenting Japanese Village!
Awesome place for a fun dinner! Great service and delicious food! The only complaint would be the prices are quite steep.
Good food cooked in front of you on the teppan table. There's a good selection of Japanese beer and sake too. When you get an amusing chef for your table, your dinner becomes a lot of fun and a great social occasion.
So much fun. The Steak Sauce is so good. Celebrated my husband's bday here and they came out with a Samarai costume for him and gave us a picture. Will be back soon.
The cook was really interactive. Food is great
The food was delicious. Our chef was a blast, he was super funny, very professional, and he made a delicious meal. It was a well worthwhile experience!
I like this restaurant a lot. The experience alone is just fun! Great for a date or group of friends. Yummy food and entertaining. Have dinner and drinks. Always a good time.
Soup, salad, rice, veggies, your choice of protein, and icecream/sorbet. Also has a few sushi rolls and various other japanese menu items, not that you'll have room for any of that. I liked the Tuna Tataki.
We go every year. The food is really well made. Great sauces and the cooks are great at entertaining the kids.
Amazing servoce Great food. A Victoria Classic, this spot has been chopping it up on the flat grill for decades. Come get a taste of Japan in your mouth.
Exceptional food as always. Best there is!
Great show, great food. Always worth a visit if you want a relaxed night out with some family or friends.
Great experience entertainment and dinner
Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Always a pleasure visiting!
Amazing food, with very funny staff
Make sure to reserve.
Definitely an experience you wont forget
The volcano guy, Don! Slick 👌Great skills and good sense of humor 😁
Best Japanese restaurant in Victoria hands down!!! We had so much fun and the food was fantastic. Staff are very friendly and attentive.
Highly recommend.
Good place for groups. Food is good, but nothing to call home about. Best parts are the atmosphere, big group tables, and small cooking show that the chef puts on
We come here at least once a year for special occasions and both the kids and adults always love it. The food is great and the chefs are always entertaining.
Food was delicious, lunch chefs were very quiet and not very interactive but we were there for food, not entertainment. The shrimp, beef and chicken were all very tasty and well cooked.
It's alright. Went here for dinner wasn't too impressed by the teppanyaki. The server did a couple of acts and was friendly enough, the food was okay at best but not worth the cost to me.
Always enjoy ourselves at this restaurant...but they have gotten cheep on the rice and steak sauce ....place has gone a little down hill but prices have gone up ...food is still good and a great place to eat.
Stopped with friends on a whim and had an awesome experience! 🙂 The adults and kiddos enjoyed the show as our meal was prepared and the food was excellent. 👍
Be prepared to spend an hour at lunch.
Food is delicious, though it is quite expensive. Staff are generally friendly. Steak sauce and rice is amazing, even just by itself.
Nice place and good food.
Great place. They cook the food right infront of you. The only reason I give it 4 stars is there is no vegetarian option. Their chi chi drinknis a must try.
Amazing food and service everytime I go! always an enjoyable experience, can hardly wait for the next time I will get to go again!
Has awesome food but we had one person who was vegetarian and we had to go to the sushi bar because they don't have anything in the main restaurant.
Excellent meal. Great value. The chef was a lot of fun. Highly recommend.
Food is nothing special, but I don't know if it's bad. Relies heavily on your dining party for a pleasant experience as the concept is a throwback to 70s America-kitsch of Japanese teppan.
Came here for my birthday and really enjoyed myself. Food was amazing and the chefs put on a great show. Would definitely recommend it.
They did a great job operating under quarantine restrictions. Always worth the money
Really good sushi. If you want the cook to make your dish right in front of you, you will need to reserve because it's popular. Try it. You'll like it!
We went there for a family lunch for my daughter's birthday the service was good but the general consensus was that for the price you pay, the food was just okay.
Good food. Friendly service. A little pricy.
Been coming here on and off for around 20 years now. Still as good as when I went as a child. If it has one thing, it is consistency. Good food, a lot of it, and some entertainment.
Good food as always, but the act gets old after you've seen it so many times. They should offer an option where the Chef can be themselves without needing to follow the script.
Awesome place for a date. Amazing food. Was my first time there will be going back
Great food and staff
The food is awesome!
The service is great, and the cooks are quite funny and entertaining. Worth the reservation and the wait :)
Friendly staff! Loved that they offered dairy free options.
Fun experience, decent food. If you're in the area it's worth a visit just once.
Incredible food, don’t miss the sesame sauce on the rice! Holy moly!
Delicious food!!!! Expensive but EXCELLENT service 😀 5 stars
Great teppanyaki great service. Our chef Don did a good job
Service was great and the food was amazing! Very memorable and although it's pricey, definitely worth the try!
Great place for a group of friends to grab a bite. The chef's were funny and entertaining and the food was delicious, the lychee sake was heavenly.
Great food, the entertainer/chef was really social and was a great presence at the table.
Sooo good one of my husband and mines favourite restaurants.
The food was great, but I'm not personally a fan of teppanyaki style service - I might change my rating if I ever go to the izakaya lounge.
If you are hangry or don't like to sit that long for dinner, probably not the best place to visit. But this is a great place for an entertaining food experience, you will leave very satisfied.
I love this place. The food is awesome! Steak and shrimp combo for the win. The chairs are awful
Really delicious and reasonably priced. Our chef was very entertaining and engaging with the group.
go for lunch - it's a better value for your $
always entertaining having them cook your meal in front of you
won Victoria Royals hockey tickets there in their box suite at the arena
Ordered a large amount of rice and sauce to take away. They were ready and the portions met the price 4.50
The food is always amazing! I love getting the steak and chicken and yaki yaki shrimp! Lil of everything! Oh and the rice and steak sauce is to die for!
Always great service. Fun experience and the food is quite addicting. Delicious sake margaritas too!
Great food!
Service lacks sometimes but overall always a fun experience
Great atmosphere had a great chef, really humourous and good food.

Andrew pit on a good show, good food, good friends, good time. It's a fun place to go with another couple or group
The NY strip was great and our chef was hilarious the shrimp with white sauce was awesome
Delicious teriyaki chicken but the salad dressing could have been better. Was very full after lunch sized portion.
Great food and friendly service. One og my fav's for lunch.
Amazing food, with a great entertaining atmosphere! Worth every penny!
Japanese Village has been a family favourite for 25 years. Best deal is at lunch! Yummmmm!

Pretty good. Mike was really entertaining while serving us.
food is good, chefs are not as exciting as other venues, would still recommend for the price
The chefs are hilarious, food is good! Quite the experience, would eat here again.
Great service. And good food. Lunches are a good deal but I prefer going for dinners.
Great food and a wonderful place to have a date night. A well known and loved restaurant by locals.
Dinner and a show! These folks know what they are doing! Are the dishes too expensive? Not for the quality of food and entertainment! Go here
Great food, service and the chef was hilarious and entertaining.
The sushi here is fresh, the chef is well versed and the atmosphere is just right (My wife expecially likes the 'no cellphone' signs).
Great food great service. Food cooked at your table in an interactive show.
Great steak, decor, and friendly staff! Would recommend every one try the steak sauce as it is off the chain!
Great food. Shared the dinner meal and it was more than enough food for 2 people.
Great spot for our work lunches. Love the atmosphere and always great consistent food.
Excellent dinner, fantastic chef (Warren) great experience.
Great food, fun experience. Lunch menu is very reasonable!
We try to go there for lunch as often as you can we love chatting with chef as he makes your lunch
We have always enjoyed Japanese Village.. Great chiefs.. Have noticed that the portions have gotten a lot smaller
Always such a good time there. Great food and fairly abordable.
A great place that I hadn't visited since my youth. Wonderful memories and food as great as I remembered.
Was good but hard to chat with the chef due to all the precautions..
The chef was hilarious he made lots of jokes and made my family and i's experiences amazing.
My favourite restaurant. Food and service is always amazing. Love this place.
Love it! Food gets cooked right at your table, and sesame sauce on your rice is the best.
Enjoyable dinner! Lots of fun with great food and company.
A little pricey but great food and experience ! Excellent service
Family reunion and the chef Michael was good and funny lol. We had a great day.
Fun to visit once and a while. You’re paying for the experience more so than the food.
Great food and really funny chefs. A wonderful family experience.

just had dinner delivered 😋 I had never thought id say that from this restaurant. . haha. it was Tremendous! still hot. and cooked to perfection. im really glad to be able to support my favorite local restaurant during this crazy time, with restaurants having to close dine in services.
Outdated. Underwhelm by the quality of the food and the theatrics. Very expensive
Good every time. Anything on the menu everyday.
Great lunch spot with excellent food.
