Kirin Restaurant's Reviews and comments
Kirin showcases Chinese cuisine in an authentic atmosphere. It has 4 branches in Downtown, West Vancouver, Richmond, & New Westminster.
❗️ If you don’t know authentic Chinese food, whether don’t go there or go with a Chinese friend.
❕So, if you are on yourself there, order many dim sums with different tastes which is a safer option.
🧾 Menu is huge and there are dozens of food there. This high number causes confusion and probably wrong orders.
🤵🏻 Servers are all surprisingly men. They try to be respectful, yet not that nice.
✅ Kirin is an award-winning restaurant renowned for its dim sums.
Suggestions (Lunch Menu):
* Numbers 1, 14, 15, 16, 17, & 18. They are all generic dim sums with less risk.
* You always have the option to choose different noodles like number 58 (Shanghai style noodle).
🍮 Numbers 33 (steamed pureed egg yolk) & 37 (egg custard tart) are delicious to have as dessert.
Enjoy!👌
Delicious food! Enjoyed all the dishes! My favorites would have to be the spare ribs and the calamari. It does get busy but the food is fresh. I will note that the food didn't all come at once and there was waiting time between each dish. Will definitely come again!
Might be the only dim sum place in DT?
Small seating, but clean and modern interior. Service is okay, food is a bit above average. Most of the clientele is non-Asian here, so food quality should be pretty good for them.
It’s just very convenient for us, no need to drive to Richmond for dim sum.
Great dim sum place in the heart of Vancouver. Nice and clean restaurant with presentable menu items. Service was good and we got there close to 3PM. We felt a little rushed with ordering which was understandable but then they didn't rush when eating which was nice. There's also not as many options for dim sum but the classics were all there. Siu mai and steamed shrimp dumplings were decent but I really enjoyed the squid ink bun with custard. Overall, a nice restaurant to have dim sum in the city. Would definitely come back.
Nice place with great costumer service
My favorite dish was lobster stir fried noodles also I really like both of the soup too but my least fav was dessert, I think it’s just almond milk
No doubt downtown Kirin is the flagship of all Kirins. Dim sums are very good. But I don't like their tea. Not enough tea in the pot.
Had a wonderful dim sum at Kirin Downtown today. Fresh and friendly staff. Recommended.
One of the best Sui Mai I’ve ever had!!! We tried their stir fried rice noodles too, it’s tasty and not oily, requires high skill level to achieve that. Service was great too, not like your typical Chinese restaurant service. They deserve 5 stars rating.
Great customer service and the food was delicious! Definitely recommend having the shrimp dumplings (har gow) and the egg tarts. All the items were prepared and cooked well. Prices are reasonable.
The food and space is EXCELLENT.
It’s a spacious and clean room, we were able to get a reservation for Sunday morning, quality of food and ingredients is well worth the price.
We loved the Kirin at City Square and after it closed we needed a new spot. Was a little hesitant to try at first because of the reviews but so glad we did.
Excellent service and delicious food. All staff are very friendly especially Sam. He helped us with birthday surprise for my friend's birthday and the restaurant even prepared a birthday card!! so sweet! Definitely will recommend more friends to visit.
I chose this place because it had good reviews and my friend suggested to go there too. Very clean and the service was great. Food was tasty too. Quality of the ingredients was good. But even tho I felt that it wasn't so much different than other good dim sum places too. One thing I prefer for dim sum are the carts rolling around. They had a menu but no pictures of what the dishes look like.
Beautiful venue, pricey food items, though the portions are fair. It's ok overall
Delicious lobster dish, pea vine was tough, and the Szechuan fish dish was ok. Primary server was very attentive and gracious. His assistants started clearing dishes before everyone finished eating which felt rushed. The restaurant was mostly empty so that was not necessary.
Great dim sum chain restaurant in Vancouver. Quality of Dim sum was out of my expectations. Steam Beef ball was the biggest I ever seen. Deep fried shrimp was very fresh. Pork rib tased good but too much bone inside. Beef stew rice cake and orange fish was mediocre. Better skip. They don't charge for tea which is another bright point especially their tea still high quality. Overall, it's a elegant, good food and reasonable price restaurant I would like to come back.
If you think my review is useful, please give me a like.
Quality dim sum for take out.
Delicious food. Nice atmosphere and great dumplings. I really enjoyed the chowmein. The thin crunchy noodles that they then pour over the sauce and protein you chose to soften them up. Really good. The pot stickers were great as well.
Good food and great service. Only thing is I wish they had more options for dim sum.
Good as always
Best dim sum in downtown Vancouver in my opinion. Everything they have is great and tastes very high quality. Ask for their house chili oil it's absolutely amazing.
Very well made dim sums. Service was quite prompt and proper. Gets busy during weekend brunch so make a reservation or come early.
One of the top restaurant in Downtown Vancouver that you can enjoy the best quality of Hong Kong dim sum and dishes here. I recommend visiting here in the morning for dim sum.
Thankful for the parking that is covered by the restaurant. Delicious dishes, good service
I am very sorry. Maybe there is something wrong with my perception of reality but I do not understand what all these people are complaining about with their bad reviews.
My eyes were open, my ears were open, and my taste buds were open (and very pleased) !
I did read all of the negative reviews for this restaurant this morning before we arrived.
My radar was finely tuned. I never did see or experience the dreaded Mr. Ed (manager). Every employee we encountered and dealt with were courteous and accommodating.
Maybe as a result of previous reviews he’s been let go or changed his name tag (and attitude).
A golden rule I try to follow is to treat every one the same way I would like to be treated.
We were well greeted. Well seated, Well treated and very well served. All 4 of us agreed that we like this location much better than the Cambi and 12th one (that’s now closed) as it’s not so noisy.
Would get 5 stars but it’s overpriced (we knew that before we arrived) and the food portions could and should be larger. Rice is cheap and everyone hates leaving a restaurant hungry after paying $30. each but rent and overhead and all and all it was a very nice experience and outing.
First time coming to this restaurant. Only ordered 2 items for a late dinner for 2. The employees were great and the food was very delicious. Love to visit here again.
Made reservations as recommended by other reviews... service was good. Food was awesome. One of the better dimsums I've had in recent. I think it rivals places like Tim Ho wan.
I had high expectations for Kirin and they were not all met. Excellent service though.
One of the nicer place to have your dim sum during lunch hour. The dim sums here are one of the best I've tasted in downtown. Even the stirred fried beef noodles are good if you're up to try something other dim sum.
Went to this restaurant with my cousins. The setting is very fancy and the food is okay. There is caviar on the shumai so it's kind of fancy.
The pricing is a bit pricey. $5.99 for 3 vegetarian dumplings. So roughly 2 bucks for one dumpling. A bit limited vegetarian options.
One of the nicer Chinese chains in town. The Kirin restaurants have been around forever with locations in Richmond, Burnaby, and Coquitlam. But my favorite was City Square; with a great view overlooking downtown it was popular with the city hall crowd and tourists alike, but unfortunately that location has permanently closed. Nonetheless, they're all nice places with good service and great food. It's the kind of place where people like to hold banquets or celebrate birthdays. Not exactly a t-shirt and shorts kind of place, but they don't enforce a dress code. If you're in the mood for traditional Cantonese food, you can't go wrong with Kirin IMHO, it's always done well and made with fresh ingredients... plus they serve dim-sum in the morning.
Nice dining experience. Promopt service and social distance. No shields. Food is more expensive than in the past. Beef chow mein had good crispy noodles. Black bean sauce a bit overwhelming
We have been coming to Kirin in Downtown ever since they opened many years ago. For dimsum today, we ordered the shrimp pork dumplings, mushroom dumplings, tofu skin with mushrooms, fried smelt fish and fried squid. Everything tasted really good but we felt that the squid was too small of a portion. Overall, the price was fair given the good quality and location of the restaurant. We got here at 10:30, a little early than usual, and there were many seats. We were surprised that they didn’t charge us for tea like other dimsum places. Also the XO source was free too.Too bad street parking outside was $5/hour.
Absolutely love the dim sums here especially the scallop dumplings.
If you love Cantonese HK style yum cha, this is like a time capsule of the fine Chinese restaurants in HK back in the 90s.
Would definitely want to come back here to try their other dishes during dinner time.
Service was excellent and place clean. Reservations recommended on weekends.
Like this place so closed to downtown. The dining experience feels like what it would be to dine in Hong Kong. The waiter with an attitude is so much part of that dining experience. The selection of dim sum is limited. While I appreciate that food is made to order, the speed of service is lacking. The Ha Bao (prawn dumpling) is the best I have had in Canada.
Everything was perfect!
I highly recommend for seafood chow mein.
Very innovative dishes, can tell it from the menu. Steamed Ribs with Chestnut combined “ steamed Ribs with Pumpkin” and “chestnut chicken”. It has fresher flavor than traditional steamed rib with pumpkin. Avocado shrimp spring roll is crunchy and crispy, avocado really matched well with shrimp. Steamed Mushroom Dumpling has crystal skin and rich mushroom flavor filling. Btw, who came up the idea that to put pine seeds into MALAGAO? really make it more than just sweet, but more layers in the flavor, also it’s really mixed well, the bubbles evenly separate in the cake. The food really deserves it price.
About the service, it really depends on the time, I came here at 11am Wednesday, and service is nice, waiters and waitresses can speak Mandarin, Cantonese and English. and they always change my plate and tablewares on time.
I ordered four dishes with a tea cattle of Puer for a lunch. It really enough for a normal person. Btw, love the Puer they choose.
Their dim sum was so good especial shumai, they came hot. Prices were reasonable.
Price:xx
Quantity 4/5
Taste: standard
Service was excellent. They gave a gold coin the day we went as a generous cerebration of chinese new year day.
Quality food, excellent service!
Fine Chinese dining and reasonable prices. Big open spacious dining. Highly recommend
This restaurant was accommodating when we came at lunch time with 8 people and no reservations. The server speaks 3 languages in English, Cantonese and Mandarin which was helpful to our group. The food came relatively fast within 15 minutes but the dessert was a bit delayed as after we finished our food we waited for another 15 minutes or so before dessert comes.
The quality of food in my opinion has improved since the last time I was here but the West 12th location. The pan fried rice noodle is a must order.
We ordered quite a bit of food and with leftovers for under $30 per person.
I’d recommend this place for dim sum.
Made reservations on Thursday night. Place had safety protocols in place for in person dining. We got sticky rice, soup dumplings, long flat noodles, egg tart, and sesame mochi. Everything was yummy but expensive compared to getting dim sum in Seattle or Los Angeles.
They have their dim sum in frozen foods.
I miss traditional dim sum with chasing after the cart for your favorite yumminess. I get that Kirin is more high end so you order off the menu.
Very expensive dim sum compared to some of the places in International District WA or Rowland Heights CA. My absolute favorite is their sesame balls. Mochi filled with sesame paste, it is pure heaven.
Given that my Chinese is very poor and my husband is Caucasian I had to use my elementary Chinese to order. It would be nice if their was more pictures for their menu so we can get more yummy dim sum, oh well.
Kirin is one of those dim sum places that you do have to make reservations unless you are coming really early in the AM but I think reservations are recommended. We have been to the one in Richmond, the one at the casino and the one in downtown Vancouver. I think I like the one at the casino the best but also probably it was the last meal I had with my best friend before I lost her to cancer in 2019. I give the Kirin at the casino 4 stars but this downtown location 3 stars. Staff efficient but no warmth or kindness whatsoever. Guess it should be expected, I am probably too Americanized.

Better to have dim sum at sun sui wah restaurant. Easy Chinese lunch in downtown
Great all around dim sum place. I would recommend it to those in the area!
Really good food with friendly waiters. Very good quality as well.
Really nice place for dim sums, desserts, service. Proper Chinese food from what I hear. Can't remember what we ordered exactly but can't go wrong with many items.
Traditional dim sum with a lot of techniques, reasonably priced overall given the portion sizes. $60 for two people and we brought home leftovers.
Delicious Cantonese Chinese food with great dim sum.
Nice environment and decent service.
Nice Chinese restaurant. Reservations required. Not really different from other restaurants of the same type.
Great dim sum but quite a bit expensive. Make sure to make a reservation as it gets very busy and servers get too busy to assist as well.
Nice, posh interiors, but not cozy, and does not have the down-to-earth, feel-good dim sum vibe. Food was ok. Not amazing, but not bad. Felt a little rushed by the staff. Liked the taro puffs and the dumpling with shrimp and pea shoots.
Classy dim sum joint.
Food was super good only complaint is that you have to ask multiple times and multiple people for items like hot sauce and soy sauce
But eventually it came
The food was very good, although the sea food congee was very stingy on seafood. The pork siu mai was the best I’ve had. The lotus leaf pork was very flavorful. The soup dumplings did not have any soup. I wanted to eat crab but the only decent option cost hundreds of dollars based on weight. Overall, good dishes, but the number of dim sum options were limited. The interior of the restaurant was much nicer than you would expect for a dim sum restaurant. The service was rather slow.
Great service, delicious food, underground parking
It's pricey though so unless you're ballin' it's mainly a treat place
Good ambience and feels fancy
We just had a wonderful lunch here at Kirin. Traditional dim sum that was very tasty. There was plenty of choices and the service was impeccable. Andrew, the manager, came by or table a few times making sure everything was perfect, and it was.
Thank you Andrew!
Most of the food was good and the service was good for the most part. I am pretty sure there was a hair in one of my dishes though, and I pointed it out to the staff. They said it was apart of the dish and just brushed me off. I was disappointed with that part of the service but otherwise nothing else to complain about. Tables were spread apart, everyone was wearing masks, and the bathrooms were cleaned frequently. Felt very clean and welcoming.
Don't believe the hype. It is an OK place. Overpriced. A tourist trap.
I came across this restaurant several years ago and absolutely loved it back then. I wondered if it would have changed at all and I was very impressed that it was still the quality, fresh and authentic dim sum that it was in those previous years. It is very reasonably priced and the portion sizes are just as they should be. I would recommend this restaurant to any dim sum enthusiast. The hot towels at the end of the meal are an added nice touch. Without a doubt, one of the best dim sum restaurant’s town.
***IF YOU FOUND THIS REVIEW HELPFUL KINDLY “LIKE” IT***
Honestly the best dim sum I've had in North America! It's super elevated and refined. Get the char siu pastries, the crab/shrimp dumplings, and the Har Gao. Great service and awesome location. Would eat here every weekend if I could
Food quality is ok but a bit expensive. Service still have room to improve
This restaurant is amazing! I went there yesterday with a friend and the food is unmatched. The employees are so welcoming and heartwarming. They made the experience so comfortable amidst this pandemic. I will undoubtedly be coming back here again soon. The sweet and sour chicken is heavenly! 10/10 food, 10/10 service! Worth EVERY penny ❤️
Wonderful hostess and tasty food!
Getting more and more expensive....can understand....
Wonderful Mothers Day special under $100 for two. Highly recommended.
One of the more expensive locations for dimsum, but always very consistent. Would recommend.
Excellent service and amazing food quality
No reservation needed. Waited about 30mins. Menu does not have enough details about the ingredients so you need to ask if you are not familiar with the food. They aware of allergies which is good.. 3 stars only since the taste is just pretty normal to me comparing to small time Chinese restaurants out there. They do have hot towels after your meal which is nice.
I thought the food and service was good. I'll definitely try it again.
Amazing! Went for lunch. Great selection of dimsum and other dishes. Everything was well prepared and delicious! With the Covid 19 restrictions followed well you feel like you're in a more cozy environment. Definitely reccomend!
Fresh King crab is the one you must try. They cook different parts of the crab in three ways. So you can fully enjoy the delicacy.
I got a recommendation from my friend, and we came here and checked it out. tbh, the food was not very good, not the tasty I imaged
I have been going to Kirin for years and really appreciate the quality of their dishes and service. The Alberni location is super comfortable. Lately we have been both ordering takeout and dining in. Try the honey and garlic spareribs!
Went there last minute with friends for dimsum. They at first couldn't accommodate us but was willing to be flexible and allowed us an hour sitting. Good level of social distancing in the restaurant. Food is a bit pricey but of very good quality. Service is also good, with quick food delivery, consistent table clearing and never rushed us even after us running slightly above an hour.
This may be the best spot in Vancouver for a classic dim sum experience — crispy bean curd rolls are a must try.
Came for dim sum and I have to say it's probably the best dim sum in the city. Highly highly recommend Kirin. They know us quite well there and our service is always amazing. If you're looking for a good steamed pork bun... this is your place !
Overpriced dim sum. Hit and miss service. Unfortunately, one of the only dim sum restaurants in the downtown core. If you have a bit more time on your hands I would recommend driving out to the Golden Seafood Restaurant or the Pelican Seafood Restaurant. Much better prices and quicker service.
Update: Returned in early 2020 after having an amazing dim sum experience a year ago, and it was dramatically worse. (Had a 5-star review before.) The dim sum menu was much smaller now and the quality seemed worse. It was still fine, but much less enjoyable. BBQ pork buns were still notably good.
Great location and excellent authentic food. Great service. Love this place!
Went there to get dumplings at night, but they only had them at lunch! Too bad, we had to leave since that's what we were craving for. Amazing customer service for the time we've been there and beautiful decoration.
Very large restaurant (must easily seat 150+) but with a 30 person group the food came out very slowly over time with the fried rice coming last long after all the dishes I would have paired with it. Also a lot of menu items were on out of stock mid week. Food was generally good but over-all experience was a bit whatever.
