The Dirty Bird Chicken + Waffles's Reviews and comments
This place is probably my recommended restaurant to people. It's just soo good and satisfying. It's really hard to find good chicken and waffles restaurants in the North but this place hits the spot. I always crave their chicken and waffles. The fries were amazing too!
Super kind staff and amazing Chicken + Waffles. My friend and I went to order 10 minutes prior to closing time which can be annoying, but they still took our orders and were very kind about it. The food came out really good and wasn’t rushed so the quality was great. 10/10 would recommend!
Fried chicken on top of waffles with maple syrup, nuff said
Great place. They do their chicken well and they have lots of options. I got the Jerk waffle sandwich. Good portioning but I wouldn’t get it again simply because the jerk isn’t really spicy. I prefer the plain old friend chicken which is done very well.
Dirty Bird is a great spot to check out if you’re looking to eat some good chicken and waffles! I got their sandwich which was good. Chicken was fresh and waffle was freshly made. I’d definitely recommend getting extra sauce tho as it was on the drier side
I got the B-lo and I just think it’s not for me.
The sauce is too much and sour. Waffle gets soggy after 5 mins. Chicken was dry and a little burnt.
Maybe I wasn’t going on a good day. Anyway, you should definitely try once at least.
Really good!! The chicken was crispy yet juicy and the waffles were perfect. I tried 2 different sandwiches and both were great tasting & all of the ingredients were fresh. It was a little pricey for the portion but nothing out of this world. Customer service was good too!
Excellent fried chicken and the dirty sauce is truly amazing!! The waffle was light and fluffy, perfect combination with the fried chicken! And I am glad they used the dark meat😋😋 You have to have the wings too!!!
If you have read any of my reviews or follow me you will notice that I love Chicken and Waffles in general. This is definitely going to be noted as one of my all time favorites. The staff are friendly and support any questions you may have about the menu items. They helped me and my friends select from the entrees and brought out the food in a timely manner. We plan on going back to Toronto this summer and this is one of the places we decided to visit at least once to enjoy a meal. The chicken and waffles can be customized to be served with chicken thigh, breast, or even leg pieces. The meat is also halal from what is stated on their exterior top left of the building. The prices were fair and this was located in a nice place to take pictures in Kensington Market.
Been craving for this for awhile. worth the drive 😍
Great fried chicken for all people but especially for celiac as it gluten-free! Yes it uses a gluten-free breading and cooked in a fryer with no cross contamination, that is why my lady and I eat it because she is celiac. Prices are good and service is great!
Ordered on uber eats, maybe thats why the food quality wasnt thr greatest.
This is a unique experience, the mixture between syrup, waffle and friend chicken is interesting and definitely worth trying.
The taste is outstanding and for an affordable price. The chicken is Halal for those who would look for such an option
There is a parking near the restaurant.
My good GOD THIS PLACE IS AMAZING.
ITS BEEN A COUPLE DAYS AND I STILL HAVEN'T STOPPED BEING BLOWN AWAY BY THIS SANDWICH.
Wife had the waffle kinda sandwich ( The Dirty Bird'ger), and i had the ODB.
Its all i have to say tbh. We'll come here again FOR SURRRREEEE. If you're getting the Dirty Bird'ger ask for more sauce in the sandwich.
Execution of the chicken and waffle was great. Nice crunchy exterior with juicy chicken underneath (bonus that it's boneless). Coleslaw was simple but tasty. Dirty fries were also delicious. Toppings added a nice flavour profile to the fries. Definitely would come back. Gets a little crammed when busy. Their washroom light didn't work while we were there, so my friend mentioned it to the staff. The staff didn't seem to care which was a bit bizarre. Worth the visit for the food but I would avoid the washroom.
This place was a 10 out of 10. We went 15 mins after they opened so it was not packed which was good. We got the chance to eat in. The chicken was amazing. We had both the white meat tenders and bone in dark meat pieces. The gluten free waffle was pretty good too. The sauces stole the show. Especially the dirty aioli, the jerk sauce and dirty sauce. The fries were good but a little too skinny for my liking. The only gripe I have is I do not find bar stool comfortable so I ate most of my meal standing up. Other than that, loved it and we will definitely be back again.
AMAZING YUMMY FOOD, the space is just tiny!
A delicious chicken & waffles spot in Toronto! FYI, the chicken here is halal for those wondering.
It does take a bit of time for the food to come out, but it is worth the wait.
They have many options when it comes to the type of chicken you want. Boneless chicken, bone-in chicken or chicken tenders. The chicken is juicy and flavourful.
I don't think I enjoy chicken and waffles because it's just too sweet, but my personal preference doesn't mean the food is bad by any means. The waffles are cooked pretty perfectly and the chicken is juicy and not dry. Staff super friendly as well!
The only place I go to for chicken & waffles! The chicken here is halal if that is something you look for.
Sometimes it takes a little longer for the food to come out, but it is so worth the wait!
They have many options when it comes to the type of chicken you want. Boneless chicken, bone-in chicken or chicken tenders. The chicken is just so juicy!
It is a little pricey, but worth every penny.
The dirty fries are a delicious addition to the chicken & waffles meal. The dirty sauce is just unreal!
Highly recommend everyone to come here for the best chicken & waffles in the city!
Dirty Tenders and Dirty fries. And that's it.
Loved the tenders, but the fries were not for me. A bit overly cooked and dry. Even with so much sauce it wasn't able to please my taste buds.
Awesome spot! I always try my best to drop by here and get some ODB. I recently grabbed some take out (due to covid) and it tastes exactly how I remember it the first time I had it... awesome!
This place is a hit or miss for their special dish. It’s a fried chicken meal on a waffle so is sweet and savoury. It is definitely a great try!
The fries were sub par hence leading to the 3*.
The fried chicken is extremely high quality but I wasn’t a big fan of the sweet sauce. Definitely recommend going to try their fried chicken though- probably one of the best in the area.
Super friendly staff. But I’ve had better chicken waffles before…also doesn’t help when there’s no place to sit to eat. Had to go to the park to eat and got harassed by crazy people.
Oh man...
This review is actually from an Uber Eats order, but has gotta be posted because of the magnitude in which this order has surpassed my expectations for this meal.
I ordered the fried chicken, coleslaw and macaroni salad and with the exception of the macaroni salad my dinner was absolutely excellent.
The Chicken:
- Perfectly fried. Juicy and perfectly cooked right into the corner of the bone.
- No grease left on your fingers (I did a wipe test with a tissue afterwards, not a trace of oil)
- The seasoning is unique and it took 2 pieces for it to grow on me (no sauce), but I enjoy it quite a bit. It's not salty, but gives that impression. Since the quality of the meat and cooking is so good, I like how the flavour pairs with that feel.
The Coleslaw
- Sharp and vinegary with a shot of tang at the end
- Being purple is a nice touch given it's my girlfriend's favourite colour lol
Macaroni
- Didn't like it. Maybe it's because it wasn't very cold due to being on the chicken, but it had a heavy, creamy type of flavour. I think I would have liked the same kind of bite that the coleslaw had in the macaroni salad.
Dirty Bird... I've had gout for the last 2 years and haven't had fried chicken since 2019. It's my favourite. The expectations were high on this order.. nice job.
Love their burgers it was so flavourful ...highly recommend and the best part it’s halal :))
Note : this review is specifically for their DIRTYFRIES.
One of the most perfect comfort foods I've tried ! Excellent balance of flavors and texture. Super filling too. If you are looking to try a little bit of everything during your visit to Kensington Marker, this is one of the musts! You wonr regret it.
Attention is super friendly too.
Had the waffle sticky icky, had it as takeout, the chicken was finger licking good but the food didn’t travel well unfortunately, recommend to eat immediately if you can. Best part is that it’s halal
I went to the Kensington Market location in downtown Toronto (pre covid times), and do not underestimate the place based on its tiny location! This place has got AMAZING chicken and waffles! Fluffy waffles, crispy, juicy chicken, and the "Dirty Sauce" was amazing!! The coleslaw was a great side and the maple syrup tied everything together so nicely. I wish this place was bigger so more people can be seated inside! Would definitely recommend this place!
I would definitely recommend this place. Do try waffles and chicken sandwich..the waffles are crispy and smooth on the inside
Great service. Got the Sticky-Icky (maple syrup with chicken burger)... A bit too sweet for my liking. The Up North Trip was solid, definitely recommend.
The chicken is cooked to perfection, juicy and battered perfectly. The sauce ads the perfect zing and to top it off the buttermilk pancakes are nice and fluffy to compliment the perfect chicken and waffles. My friend and I ordered the Sticky-Icky alongside the ODB and both were phenomenal options. Highly recommend for everybody to try.
Ordered the ODB and the Vegetarian version of ODB (made out of cauliflower) . The portions were decent but chicken was a bit dry. Waffle was ok. The fried cauliflowers were surprisingly delicious but would be great if it’s in bigger pieces so I’m not eating alot of batter. The sauce was sweet and a bit spicy, goes well with the chicken. A bit pricey for a meal, I think it was 17.99 + tax per meal. Service was great.
The food was good and the chicken was fried perfectly, but the service was lacking. My favourite part of the restaurant was their choice of condiments; there's real maple syrup, and two different hot sauces. I recommend the hot sauce in the yellow bottle, which is mustard-based.
Chicken and waffles are pretty good, the fries on the other hand were greasy and burned never order these again
I came here because I had two Groupons and my boyfriend wanted to try them out.
The chicken itself was crispy and the sauce had a little kick to it. The meat was tender and and juicy. It was definately a good piece of fried chicken. However, the waffle wasn't that great as it was spongey and soft. I could've made a better Eggo waffle than this. The coleslaw was meh and the macaroni salad that my boyfriend had was really dry.
The fries were decently crispy and they give you a large amount too so that's a bonus! I honestly don't see myself coming here again since it's quite pricey for what you get.
Had the B-LO burger and the ODB. Both were great and absolutely delicious, however, it took about 20 minutes for them to come out. The chicken, seasoning and sauce is great. Tender and rich in taste. The portion is a bit small for the burger given that it costs ~8$. The chicken and waffles were great but once again definitely over priced at $16.95. Overall, a great place to try chicken and waffles.
Amazing food! However, slightly pricey as two meals cost $40. Extremely limited seating for maybe 15-20 people. Worth a try.
Went here for the first time. Staff was super friendly and the food was fresh and tasted really good. Will be going back here again.
FOOD: 100% INCREDIBLE - so good my husband a gluten eater, couldn't even taste the difference! The gluten free waffles were fluffy, and a soft, chewy, but with a hint of crunch texture. Fries were on point - hand cut and crispy! Loved the tato salad, mayo based with onions and I think capers, and the slaw was vinegar based. I LOVED the fact that EVERYTHING here was gluten free EXCEPT the mac salad and a gluten waffle BUT the french fries and chicken are 100% gluten free and have dedicated fryers ! WOOT WOOT ! Safe service, clean establishment and they asked about an allergy right away. I am sensitive to pepper, so for me, the fries and batter for the chicken was a bit "potent" but so flavorful I did not mind the pepper, and it was not overpowering. I ordered the Great White North and loved that I had THREE tenders to work with - to eat as fried chicken with ketchup (since it's rare to get fried GF chicken) and the rest with my waffles with the REGULAR maple syrup. I did NOT get the buttered maple or ranch on my entree - personal preference! The waffle DID has a small amount of butter in it - and the counter staff even knew this when I said no lactose - VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE COUNTER STAFF!
AWESOME SERVICE BEFORE I EVEN ENTERED !
Traveling with Celiac Disease can be tough, and it becomes more difficult when I need to try my best to avoid lactose as well - so I need to do A LOT of research before I enter an establishment so I can feel safe, at ease, and not have to ask a million questions upon arriving - JOSH ANSWERED FIVE EMAILS FROM ME BEFORE I WAS EVEN A PATRON
I have Celiac Disease, as well as severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome - I do NOT eat gluten, and avoid lactose as much as I can - he answered multiple questions with enthusiasm and was even able to provide me with the amount of butter used in the waffle - which was minimal so I felt comfortable eating it (I do not have a lactose allergy, rather an intolerance). He was SO helpful - HIGH SUGGEST A VISIT HERE FOR A SAFE AND TASTY CELIAC TREAT <3
A hidden gem in the heart of Kensington Market, Toronto. Great home made fried chicken.
This place isn’t that bad. I had the chicken tenders and the maple waffle and fries. Its a bit pricey for the basic items on the menu simply because the condiments and syrup and seasonings are really what makes the food taste good; without those things the food tastes just like the chicken and waffles at Pickle Barrel or Harlem downtown. But overall this is decent place to get some good chicken if you’re in the mood for that.
Food is good, it will not blow you away, but it is definitely worth a try. The venue is a bit small, but is an experience to be had.
Best fried chicken and sandwich in town. Awesome
Food was made quickly and the taste was good, but not anything special. Unfortunately, the portions were also very small compared to the price - I got the “Great White North,” and soon found I paid $20 for three small chicken strips and a waffle. The total cost to produce such a meal is around $3, so the fact that you are gouged with very small portions is disappointing, to say the least.
Excellent chicken waffle. Just moist! Just heads up, not a lot of seating.
Great place for some tasty chicken and waffles!
My favourite chicken and waffle spot! The employees are friendly and answer all your questions. The fried chicken itself is phenomenal. I've driven downtown just to satisfy my chicken and waffle craving and I have yet to be disappointed. Last time I went I did have a few mixups with my orders however it wasn't anything the staff couldn't fix. Dirty fries, The ODB and the Sticky Icky sandwich are my Fav! (Photo is from a few years ago)
Meh.
I love fried chicken and waffles. Toronto has a good scene for it. I can see how this place may have been groundbreaking a few years ago, but today other places are doing it better and Dirty Bird is not keeping up.
The good:
Good chicken. Juicy, with a crispy crust. Lean cuts, no excessive batter.
Soft, spongy waffle.
The service is quick and the food presentation is picturesque.
The rest:
$20 for the staple dish is a high price point.
The waffle had way too much baking soda. Even with the overpowering sause, it's all you could taste.
Putting the sauce on top of the chicken is nice for a photo but it make the crust soggy in minutes. By the time I ate half of it, the waffle had dissolved into the source as well - just a mess of mush.
Love the buffalo wings here. Sauce is a bit sweet and not super hot but has enough heat to get a little sweat on.
You know when it smells so good, I forgot to snap a picture before touching it !! The waffle was great and fried chicken was delicious that was my first time eating chicken and waffles!
Yum delicious food and it was delivered !
Holy actual heck the chicken at this place is frickin amazing! A friend and I checked the place out on a whim and it's hard to explain exactly how awesome the experience was! The waffles were fresh, soft and warm, and they went perfectly with the chicken. There was a good amount of sauce and after the first bite, I just couldn't stop eating it! The music here was pretty nice as well, and the only criticism I have is that the mac and cheese was a bit lack luster, not bad, but nothing to write home about, although that might just be a personal preference kinda thing. Over all I would definitely recommend checking the place out if you're a fan of nice, savoury chicken!
THEY ARE THE BEST ! One of the reasons why I visit Kensington market. Their chicken waffle with maple syrup is daa bomnmbbb. 👍 the only con is that they’re super famous and the place is not too big so you’d struggle to find a spot to eat or will have to eat it standing up, but it’s all worth. Good price, good service, great food! 여기 치킨와플 진짜 개존맛탱이에요 !!!
Better than average but it's a shame they don't serve chicken breasts, when you can infuse flavour into that cut then you know you're a chicken master.
The plan was to go to the one on Bloor but we were told that they were closing down. For years I’ve been dying to go to the Dirty Bird from I first heard about them. When I finally made it there and tried the food I was like uuhh. I built up all that excitement for a uuhh. The fries was great, tasted good and not too much salt even though to some it might not look pleasing I didn’t mind. I ordered The Big Dirty and I waited a while. Great presentation but the waffle over powder the chicken and made the chicken taste bland. I had to put hot sauce on mine because the chicken could have used a little more seasoning. The price was a little up there at around $21 and change plus they asking for tip when I’m picking up my own food. I might go back again one day if I’m up for the drive.
It was really juicy and crispy and the hot sauces is really taste tooo
The place is really small... the waffles were good but the chicken wasn't anything special. I wish we got real cutlery and not a basic dollarama plastic knife and fork
Love their chicken wings, they are smaller than most chicken wings but the maple garlic flavour is the bomb. The waffles are very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, some people think it’s too sweet but I personally like sweets so this doesn’t bother me.
This place is amazing! They offer the best waffles and chicken in whole town! Staff is great and the space is clean and spacious. It’s very crowded in lunch hours but is because the place is extremely good
Had the dirty fries both of the times that I've been to this location. One of the best fries I've ever had.
This place is frickin chicken delicious! Often imitated, rarely duplicated. Almost every fried chicken joint now offers this dish, but they're not even close to getting it right. If you want to know why this became a hot food trend, try it here, and you'll understand
The dirty fries were simply amazing!! The ODB chicken on waffle with sweet sauce was a little weird. Chicken with a savoury sauce would taste better.
For great chicken and waffles, this is the place to go. I ordered The Great White North which consisted of 3 pieces of white meat boneless tenders on a waffle with buttered maple syrup and a side of cole slaw. The chicken had great seasoning and was super crispy, while the inside remained juicy and tender. As for the waffle, it was okay. Nothing bad, but nothing special either. Together though, everything tasted fantastic. I just wish they had put a little more maple syrup on my order.
Service here was relatively quick, considering there's usually a line up of people waiting for their order. The place itself is quite small with seating for only about 10-12 people.
The prices here are reasonable. An order of chicken and waffles (and choice of side) is $15 and is probably a big enough meal for most.
Their other menu items also look decently priced.
Overall, a great place to get your chicken and waffle cravings satisfied.
What's there to say? You can't hate on chicken and waffles! The food is very good and the portion size is great!
I had the Up North Trip and it was delicious (it came with a waffle, 3 pcs of chicken and side salad). I have to admit, I couldn't finish the whole thing. I would definitely go back
Good chicken and the dirty bird sauce is amazing. Ordered the Jerk Chicken sandwich ... Which was kinda small but still very delicious seating is limited. They now have air conditioning at some point they didn't but I can see when it's full it would a lot less cool. For those that are looking Dirty Bird is Halal.
The staff was very friendly and the food was amazing!! Waffle & chicken?! Who knew it would be this good! The fries portion was huge but the burger wasn’t that big. I would expect a bigger portion of the burger for the price but the burger was definitely delicious! There’s not much parking here (street parking only) but it’s a great location! Lots of small businesses on Kensington which is awesome!
Unique setting. Great food. Decent price. I was skeptical seeing the prices at first but the food was so tasty and filling I could not complain. Definitely coming back.
This is the place you dream about when you crave Chicken and Waffles. It's either your favourite location or you've never had it. Serving size is massive. Feel free to skip the cakey desert waffle as it's nowhere near as good as the main course.
Tried Chicken & Waffles for the first time. A mixture of flavors. Delicious
Really good chicken and waffles! But I feel it's a bit pricy for what it is.
The fried chicken was hot, super juicy, with thin batter, and awesome dips to go with it (would buy bottles of the scotch bonnet ranch if I had the option).
I don’t think the chicken was made to order given how fast our order was ready (<5mins) but it tasted so fresh so no complaints!
Favorite chicken and waffles place in town! Not only theyre gluten free and halal (great place to go for friends with some restrictions), everything on the menu was great. My favourite? The Dirty Club. Portion is huge and great for sharing.
Although I wish there's more seats - but its understandable considering how tiny the shop is!
It's the regular fried chicken with sauces ! Nothing different
Not the best fried chicken I've had. I believe the food is overpriced for what you are getting as the chicken and Waffles was close to $20 and was mediocre. I was disappointed as this place looked like a cool fried chicken spot but I will not be coming back. There are plenty of other cheaper and better alternatives in the area.
Small portions of chicken and definitely not enough seating. Also, they don't offer any chicken breast options.
The chicken is really crispy and juicy! There isn’t a lot of seating though so the environment is a little uncomfortable.
An awesome experience. Chicken and waffles may sound like a weird combo but it works together very well. The chicken was super juicy and it paired well with the waffle and the maple syrup just worked. I don't know how but the sweet and savoury combo works. The dirty fries was amazing as well. I shared my meal with my friend as I think the portions are quite generous. Worth the money , and it's halal! Highly recommend!
The best chicken & waffles I’ve ever had! Despite it being a mission to go all the way to Kensington, but it’s good! Relatively expensive though, so be ready to dish out $20+ for a sandwich like this. Lost a star only because the bathroom is mildly terrifying and pretty gross.
Soooooo amazing. Can’t believe the person that took our order at such a busy time, Pedestrian Sunday, took time to explain the different combos. She was so patient and knowledgeable. Best of all, her smile shone through her mask!!!
As it was my first time coming to Dirty Bird, I was expecting it to to pretty great because of all places, my friends wanted to try, it was this one. I came along for the ride but ended up getting the best bonus. Turned on by service then doubled up by the delish fried chicken and the oooo so great fluffy crispy waffles!!! The dirty sauce will knock u out.
Go try this place and start ur food ride by getting the best advice and service by Amanda (on the receipt) and eating ur heart’s content, by actually getting delish food that u order
Seating is limited and quite crowded. Chicken is tender and tastes great with the waffles. At first I thought it was a little on the pricier side, but chicken and waffles were a big portion. The sandwich...not so much.
Finally got here to try the chicken and waffle. The chicken was crispy and tasty. The waffle was light and soft. I like it, very traditional Canadian American style food,
Great place halal chicken my kids love there chicken so I highly recommend
I ordered the chicken fingers and waffles with a side of coslaw. The chicken was crispy and juicy, also my waffle had crispy edges which were both delicious. The white sauce on-top was also very yummy. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the coslaw.
Great place to go for gluten free chicken and waffles.
Well worth the wait! Small space but the food is great!
Tasty Food and lovely surving staff ❤..
My whole Family appreciate such delicious and Tasty Food...
I suggestion for all to visit and eat dinner with family...❤
Ordered the JERK waffle. It was good, service could be better tho
Chicken is cooked well flavourful. Definitely worth going for the experience of chicken and waffles. Definitely one of the better fried chicken joints in the area. Only cons are not enough dining space and slightly on the high end of price.
