Gyugyuya (Downtown Toronto)'s Reviews and comments
I had the beef rice bowl and karaage chicken. Both were delicious! It even came with a salad and a miso soup. Great food!
2 things are offered here, Gyudon & Curry. I'm not sure if this curry is supposed to imitate Kanazawa curry?
It's good but not perfect.
I also wonder how you can burn cheese without melting it ?!
Surprisingly good casual japanese comfort food! I enjoyed both the curry fried chicken rice and the gyudon (beef rice). I would say it's a bit pricey for casual food though (~$15pp)
Delicious Japanese curry for a comfortable location near Yonge & Dundas. For those that have been to Japan, it reminds me of Yoshinoya (fast food beef bowls). It's decent Japanese Beef on Rice but with Curry as the staple option to try! Recommended if you're looking for a quick Japanese eating experience.
You can also order it with different alternatives like chicken or seafood, with curry or not. Lots to choose from in the menu. The food is pretty fast and the quantity is pretty huge. They all generally come with a salad. We've had the Gyu Curry (Egg, Beef, Curry with Rice) and Oyako Don (Chicken mixed with Egg on Rice with some sauce in the rice as well). They were all pretty tasty and decent sizes!
The service was pretty good - appreciated the recording of 1 member of the table on the same paper of our manual writing of the order. They do a good job with the single serve chopsticks and spoons to maintain sanitization. Cashless payment available and very quick to cash out! Unfortunately when we went on a Saturday, the bathroom was out of order. (Tip: Closest location pending on what time would be Eaton Centre or 10 Dundas Street East food court.)
I was so hungry I almost didn't take a picture, and with how good it tasted I wouldn't have regretted digging in. It's the best katsu curry I've ever had, and the portions are good in size with plenty of rice (even my favourite katsu place serves with a tiny amount of rice for their portion size). Filling and good value.
I'm glad to see a Scarborough location on their site. Was just in the area for a court summon downtown, and was glad to get this discovery in exchange. Happy to know I can get some close to home. Would recommend this location too tho, cozy.
As good as I remember it two years ago! Efficient service, food came relatively quickly. Glad they doing dine in again!
Good place for curry, altho some of the dishes are a bit expensive, and the cheaper dishes leaves you wanting more. Taste is authentic and the service is good.
Some simple and comforting Japanese food that was at an affordable price and was delicious!
Spilled water on the floor because i got so excited about how good the food was. Also, forgot to take photos because of this. #badmillenial
Great flavours for the curry, but there wasn't too much sauce. Overall good food but a bit pricey for lunch.
Good price, delicious food, came very fast. Would definitely go there again!
This was the second time I ordered from this restaurant. Customer service is excellent. Food is amazing. Pretty happy with the packing.
If I didn't have their beef bowl my Toronto trip would feel completed. I been going to this location since 2012 and I had brought many friends over. It's also easy for meet up since it's right there at Eaton center.
If you haven't been there pay yourself a visit. You won't be disappointed.
The food was pretty good and came out decently fast!!! Curry was very flavourful. The restaurant was clean and the waitress was very nice. I use to come here for cheap Katsu (in comparison with Katsuya) but I believe their prices have gone up since the pandemic. Don’t blame them, but it’s definitely not on my cheap eats list anymore. We ordered the chicken and pork katsu, all three of my friends couldnt really tell the difference taste and appearance wise tbh so it’s good if you don’t eat pork. The sauce on top of the cutlet was amazing!!! The karage came with a lot more meat than I expected, I wish they also had the sauce on top (will definitely ask for it next time). All in all, good experience, and good food 👍🏻
Great food but customer service needed a little work.
Finally got to try this place today and boy did it not disappoint!!! Didn’t get a chance to get photos but I tried the Yasai Curry, 10/10 so delicious! 🤗🍛 Will definitely be coming in person to try some time!!!
Very good Japanese curry !
My first time having Japanese curry, and I am so glad I tried it! The service at this location was wonderful and they were so kind and helpful in suggesting what I should try. I will definitely be ordering again!
I prefer the katsu over the gyudon. We got the king curry, which has pork, chicken (forgot to take a photo) shrimp, and sausages; as well as the Gyu cheese curry. Maybe since it's takeout, the cheese kinda got cold along the way. It would probably be good if it were freshly cooked. Good katsu place though.
This is hands down my favourite place to have Japanese curry in the city. The prices are fair, and portions are huge. Nothing can beat awesome food at affordable prices.
We always visit Gyugyuya on our trips to Toronto. The crispiness of the katsu mixed with the smoothness of curry is so perfect in your mouth. If you are looking for the ultimate comfort food, this is it.
Was looking for takoyaki ....only in other branches...would have been great
Best Japanese curry in Toronto! Great service even during covid, and prices match the quality.
Amazing service. Great food. Dined solo and loved the little “bar” section where solo people ate. Portion size was great for the price. 10/10 would recommend and will definitely be back!
pretty good:)
I love Japanese Curry and they did a nice job with it. It's an easy walk from Eaton Centre. The restaurant was quick and inexpensive, but there did seem to be a communication problem. Never the less, they served me what I wanted and were very pleasant. I'd definitely return
Great portion sizes and tastes amazing, especially for the price. Wait staff is great and friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend ton katsu for first time goers as it is sweet but has a tad bit of spice to it.
Amazing Japanese Curry in Downtown Toronto~ 5 min walk from Dundas or St Patrick TTC Station. They have 11 options of curry rice to choose from, with different combos of tonkatsu, Karaage, fried shrimp and more.
It's the perfect spot to grab lunch with super generous portion of rice and sauce! The thick and rich curry sauce has a really nice balance of flavour, and went well with the side of the cabbage salad. I added the extra cheese to go with the karaage, and I really love how they torched the melty mozzarella cheese. The pieces of chicken karaage were also golden crispy and juicy! Overall the curry were really filling, but I just wished that there were a little bit more sauce with the rice. The Gyu Cheese Curry also came in a larger plate then the other curry, so it was especially filling compare to the other curry.
Karaage Curry + extra cheese - $11.99
Gyu Cheese Curry - $13.99
Tonkatsu Curry - $12.99
Yasai Curry - $10.49
Friendly staff and delicious curry. This place is great for authentic tasting food and a great place to hangout with friends. The menu is small and the items are quite affordable.
It's a small and crowded place. They serve tasty and inexpensive food with Japanese curry. I had the Tonkatsu curry it consists in deep fried pork chops, they are very crunchy and it's perfect with the curry sauce. The service was fast and good, the only thing I didn't like was the color of the place it was a little bit unpleasant for me.
It was my first time trying Gyugyuya after shopping at the Eaton Centre. The menu was simple to read with photos. The service was prompt and price is reasonable. I would totally come back again.
Wow, the katsu and fish was crispy on the outside, moist and tender on the inside. Tasted fresh! The beef cheese Don is made with mozzarella and thin slices of flavorful beef. Definitely one of the best Japanese curry house I've had.
Requires vaccine for dine in, unfortunately.
The beef bowl is really good though, could probably have 3 back to back, no cap.
It’s just like fast food. It’s OK but definitely not a restaurant that would make you impressive.
It's a small restaurant, but can fit a decent amount of people with their larger tables so long as it's not too busy. The food is good! Comes in a decent proportion with sides.
Great option for Japanese curry! I go here often and love going here because it’s quick, affordable, great portion and pretty good food.
My go-to is the Chicken Katsu Curry. There’s always a lot of food and the chicken is nice and crispy. The cheese curry options are also pretty good.
Very tasty curry base, better than expected. Beef rice bowl was little too sweet for my liking. Cozy little place with good portion meal.
Tried the curry beef with cheese on rice. Service is quick. Taste was descent. Dish is not very big, but cost is also quite low at 12.99$. If you pay cash, you also get a 10% discount.
Really yummy food and good service. They still offer a10% discount when paying by cash. The curry has a flavour that's unique from others that I've tried in the city. The king curry is a pretty good value and is big enough to share with a second person.
Clean restaurant with quick and easy service. Lots of curry options with large portions of food. Cheese curry is always a favourite.
Amazing, delicious, great service. So satisfying. Filled me with joy to finally eat here again after the pandemic.
The food here tastes so comforting - it’s like your mum cooked it. The beef slices were delicious and came in a generous portion. Try their gyu curry - the curry sauce adds so much flavor to the dish.
So tasty and hit the spot on a cold night
Simple and delicious Japanese curry in the downtown core. The menu is not too broad so it's a great example of a place focusing on getting their curry to an amazing place. Worth not just a try but more than a few return trips!
Good portions and good Katsu and curry dinners. A bit expensive when compared to other similar places that also offer unlimited soup and whatnot.
I really like this place. Great location and menu. Never tried a japanese curry before and I love it. The service is ok and I like the interior design of this place. The price is also ok. Good service overall. The place is quite busy sometimes.
Food is pretty consistent the times I've been. Service has been decent too, not much complaints as their staff is fairly friendly and I never wait long for my food. People on yelp reviews saying that their curry wasn't very good but for me it was pretty decent seeing that I'm not a big curry fan to begin with and I liked my beef curry. I'm no curry connoisseur though, so I can't comment based on authentic curry in Japan as I haven't tried. My friend got the cheese curry and it was a much bigger portion and she liked it a lot so I'd say that would be the best bet if you're feeling hungry or a bigger eater. Mine was tasty but a lot simpler and portion quite a bit smaller. But if you're not a big eater then these portions are probably enough. Prices are reasonable, in the $10-14 range for most dishes which is expected from most downtown places in the area.
Love their Japanese curry, good services too.
Fast service, friendly staff and crispy katsu dishes
Wow. This place is soo tasty. We had the curry katsu and the curry beef. The appetizer karage was very generous. I am looking forward to my next visit.
I'm pretty surprised with the negative reviews because I had pretty great service and great food. The servers were very quick and very friendly. The food too was very unique - I haven't seen a lot of Japanese curry places in the downtown area. The portions were also surprisingly filling even though it looked small at first... probably because of the rice. Anyways, it was a good place and definitely the place I'd visit again if I crave Japanese curry
One of my favourite Japanese curry spots! A little on the overpriced side, but still immensely filling. Ambience is very upbeat and social - there's tables for groups and booths for people who come alone. Service was good, servers are attentive, quick, and friendly. Location is by lots of other Asian food options.
Overall it is ok. We have fried chicken and marinated beef on top of rice. Fried chicken is crispy and juicy. The seasoning of beef-don is not as flavorful, the meat is not tender and some of is chewy. But the rice beneath with the sauce makes it tasty. Server is ok.
Fast service. I would have prefer a onsan egg with a breaded cutlet but nevertheless it was pretty good especially the curry ( the cutlet itself is better at Mr. tonkasu).
First time trying the Japanese curry, it was very delicious, we ordered the bead and the chicken curry both are delicious... Small location but well managed
Gyugyuya is one of my fav places to visit when I'm in downtown If I'm craving some rice. We came in around 3:00pm which was not busy, and immediately we were greeted by a server to choose a seat. Water and a menu was promply given as soon as we sat down. The menu doesn't have too many options as a majority of their main dishes would be their gyu (beef) rice, except with a few variation to choose from. The servers were very helpful when we had questions and when I asked about the bathroom, they cautioned me to be careful when I walk down.
We ordered the Gyudon and the Curry Gyudon which did not take too long to come out. The portion sizes were good for the price you pay as the dishes were pretty big. The beef on both dishes were very soft and tender I conparison to other places I've tried before (where the beef was too crispy). I was very satisfied with the Gyudon as I liked the simple harmony between the regular beef and plain rice. For the gyu curry, the first few bites were tasty, however as I had more bites, I felt that there was just a bit too much curry as I couldn't taste much of the beef at all and I found the the curry taste abit too strong as I'm used to the slightly sweeter and lighter Japanese curry.
Overall I had a good experience here, and the servers were attentive to our table. This place is definitely a must visit if you're around the area :)
TIP: They are doing a promotion where you get 10% discount for paying cash

Oh Japanese curry how I love you so. This is the first time I have seen a curry specialty store in North America so I was super excited. Needless to say, I was impressed. Very flavourful curry with tasty toppings (definitely recommend the karaage). Good service as well. If you pay cash you get 10% off.
Great place to eat when you want some Japanese comfort food. All this place does is Japanese Curry and they offer it in a variety of different proteins. The flavour is slightly a bit more beefy tasting than a traditional curry would taste in my opinion. I had the Gyu cheese curry this time and it's not bad but I prefer the tonkatsu better which we did order as a side. My wife ordered a nabeyaki curry which has no meat in it other than a piece of hotdog which tasted smokey, there is also an egg hidden under the cheese which was a nice surprise as it was slightly runny. The chicken karaage is very crunchy and crispy good texture. The portion you get is very generous, and all the curry dishes come with a handful of cabbage salad on the side.
I like the curry here as traditional Japanese curry is sweet and very little kick. This place they make it a bit spicy and it balance with the sweetest from the beef and the sauce. However, i think the sauce is too salty and more rice will help to balance the dish.
Very delicious Japanese curry at a reasonable price. This restaurant has great service with a wide selection of dishes. Take out was fast as well
A pleasant environment with simple but delicious food. I ordered the tonkatsu curry with an order of karage on the side.
The karage was juicy and a good portion relative to price. The tonkatsu was pleasantly crispy, and came with hard boiled eggs on rice. I recommend getting the curry on the side so that the tonkatsu stays crispy until dipped, and you can mix with the rice to your desired level.
Not necessarily a negative but the curry is consistent with what you expect for a Japanese curry, with a tiny spice with a creamy texture, but there isn't any particular flavour palate that stands out as memorable.
That being said if you're in the area it's a great choice if you've got an itch for a mild curry.
Favourite Japanese curry in the city. The flavours are so delicious and the meats are fresh and juicy. The staff is very friendly and service is typically pretty fast!
So good!! Hits the spot and is a good choice for a super quick meal. In and out in 15 mins. Staff are excellent!!
I love the japanese style curry, sadly I havent had time to go back. But ill bring friends the next time I come back
An excellent Japanese curry place with good food at a very reasonable price.
Sort of unique and really stands out from all the all-you-can-eat "sushi" places around it.
The atmosphere and limited menu really reminds me of a street side izakaya in Tokyo.
The food is very good, if a little too salty and the portions are exceptional, especially at the very reasonable price. My friend and I had 2 dishes and beers for under $45!
I really recommend going here at aleat once.
Great curry (got the tonkatsu) and excellent tasting meat too. And the wait for take-out was pretty short (at 11:50am). Will definitely return!
Was craving Japanese curry and decided to look up the best options. I didn't want to go to another Asian restaurant and just get any other curry instead I wanted some place that specialized in it to an extent. I found this place through Google and decided to go with my gf.
It was great! The menu isn't filled with non sense, it specialized in Japanese rice dishes so curry and meat with rice we're the majority of their dishes. I ordered the tonkatsu curry and my gf ordered the cheese beef curry and we had a side of fried calamari.
The ton katsu was good, the curry was even better. But the biggest highlight was def my gf's dish. The Beef cheese curry was at a whole other level and I would def recommend it if you like the sound of it. The calamari was a bit salty but that was fine by me.
Like every other downtown restaurant the space isn't always there. It can get packed easily and it's a popular spot so time your visits well and have a back up ! It's close to Yonge and Dundas so your options are open.
Excellent place, delicious food.
I do not remember the name of mine. It was so good. I tried to stand line beside of the place but to many people are standing so I came in here and I really love this place. The servers are not bad and quite.
Every menu we ordered was pretty salty. Since we were very excited to have authentic Japanese food, little bit disappointed.
Really enjoyed the food here. Would recommend.
Great place, Gyudon is the best
Food is good, but I think that for the price (including the mandatory 12% sevice fee) it came too little. The service was great by the way.
Decent food with reasonable price! I ate cheese beef curry, and it was really yummy!( those who have homesick for Korea and Japan, you guys must come here. It kind of tastes like jangjorim😋)
We flew in from Florida and this amazing place made our trip magical. Their food tastes healthy AND delicious at the same time. Best chicken curry Katsu on the continent 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
And their service was amazing too 😍😍😍 thanks for making our trip memorable guys!
This place is delicious. I had the ton katsu curry with yakitori on the side. I have no complaints. Will be coming back.
Great curry! One of the best in Toronto.
It is a okay place for a quick dinner.
Love the food here. Straight up beef with minimal rice. The added cheese is a really nice touch. The curry is top notch too.
The portions are large and the food is pretty good but not the best Japanese curry I have had in Toronto.
My first time trying Japanese curry. Chicken katsu curry was absolutely delicious. A bit of confusion picking up - I was asked for an order number. I could not, and still now cannot find said order number from any receipts/emails. My order was through Ritual. Just an FYI for the owners, I was never given an order number to receive my order, so please sort this issue out
Delicious and affordable
Karage curry was good. Don Katsu curry was ok. Too much rice too little sauce. Apparently asking for extra sauce (only needed 1-2 spoonfuls) is 5.00.
My favourite spot downtown for Japanese curry. Reminds of Japan.
Good katsu and japanese curry. Not great, but good.
Very delicious food. Deserve 12% mandatory tip.
I love how juicy the karage chicken was. I also had the beef cheese curry rice, simple but delicious.
I have been craving japanese curry since my trip to Japan. This place has satisfied it 😁
This is the most authentic to Japan. The portion size is good. A bit pricey but very rich in flavour.
The curry was really good. A bit expensive for the portion but overall a great meal and amazing service!
Nice place.
Beef curry 🍛 Fun and quick. A bit pricy (around $12-$15).
Decent food for a fair price. Service was quick and friendly!
Amazing food and service. Wish i lived closer or i would be there all the time. Usually go there for work lunches find the service quick and great. Food is always fresh and tasty. Servers are more than happy to help you with picking out dishes.
Karaage one was good!
