Saltlick Smokehouse's Reviews and comments
Have had multiple excellent experiences dining here! The atmosphere is superb; their staff is very friendly, extremely helpful, and super fun. You can tell that they love what they do and take pride in what they serve you. The portions are family style so there’s really no way that you won’t get enough food. Everything is so juicy and tender, and full of flavour. You can’t go wrong with your choices but I love the brisket, pork and hot chicken! The brisket mac and cheese is transcendental 🤤🤤 This place offers you a real experience for your tastebuds. The cocktails are tasty as well!
Pretty good BBQ food, best is definitely the ribs and brisket. would not recommend the fried chicken as it doesn't have much taste. Note that the prices are per person, what they have listed is for the whole table.
Southern BBQ and hospitality at its finest! Immediately when we walked in felt welcomed by the staff and environment. Small space but BIG portions we had the game day platter for 2 and could only get through half of it. Everything was fantastic, Never have we ever had brisket so big and juicy. You absolutely have to have the brisket Mac and cheese and spicy beans. We will definitely be back and adding to that we are about an hour drive away but it’s worth it! Thank you so much Saltlick you guys know what your doing!
We ordered a feast for 2, and when it came out it blew our minds!!! The Quantity you get was absolutely amazing. Everything tasted like there was a story behind every meat! The flavours and spices were not disappointing at all. One of my new favourite restaurants and a must go back to for sure! P.S Pork Belly Tacos at this place changed the soul in my belly. Servers were amazing and the Chef definitely gets personal and puts in work to bring the menu to life ❤️🔥 we won’t forget this place
Never had a bad meal here!
The prices reflect the quality of the meals they serve - got sticker shock before my first meal, but have returned numerous times since and never mind paying an extra $10 per person for guaranteed great food.
Favourites:
Brisket Mac & Cheese
Brisket
Pork Belly Nuggets
Parking is iffy, as it usually is in downtown Hamilton, but there is a lot on Hughson St N. and you can just walk through the churchyard to get over to James St.
A cool communal style barbeque experience. You order by person and choose types of meat and sides. We went for 5 meats for 5 folks and were not disappointed with the amount recieved. The food itself was quality, the favorites were the pork belly and ribs. The cauliflower, coleslaw and beans were also amazing. A nice outing overall.
I tried this place for lunch. Was my 1st visit though Ive been eyeing it for a while. Ok, as soon as you walk in you're greeted with an amazing smell... if you're hungry, you're gonna near drool. I picked up a pulled pork sammy. Delish! Half was more than enough. Ill be looking forward to the rest for dinner. Super friendly staff. Really good sandwich. Order off their webwite.
We had reservations for 630, had to wait a bit to get our table but the staff were very apologetic for the wait. Food and drinks were good, staff was very friendly. Left full with leftovers to bring home!
This is a great place if you love BBQ. I have only been this one time, but the atmosphere is lovely. It has an industrial decor featuring exposed brick and lower lighting. I will say that while I was there it got quite smoky inside, if this is an issue for you I'd recommend the equally lovely patio. I would also probably recommend calling and specifying you would like the patio as it didn't appear to have too many tables (probably due to current safety guidelines).
The food was pretty good! I found it to be a bit on the salty side, although given the name this might be intentional? Everyone has their own tastes, for me it was a but over salted, but it was definitely still delicious. Would recommend the Brisket, the Brisket Mac and Cheese, and the Cornbread for sure.
All in all of you love BBQ this place is def worth checking out. I'll be trying it again, as I feel the oversalting was likely a one off.
Wow. This place is absolutely amazing. A great selection of meats to choose from and everything I tried was unbelievable. We were able to get a same day reservation through the online booking very easily. Lots of great beers on tap. The service was on par with the food. Our drinks were never empty and our server made sure we were looked after every step of the way. Offered up great suggestions for combinations on our platter. Will absolutely return here soon.
We went over the weekend, and not only was the food/drinks/cocktails bomb (... seriously, look at the photos) but the service was next level. Really friendly and had great recos. The patio space is perfect & we felt totally safe eating there given that we're in the midst of a pandemic (socially distanced, clean & everyone had on masks).
Wow wow wow!! Brisket, pulled pork, fried chicken, ribs and pork belly nuggets. Side of brisket mac and cheese and fries. Great service and great food!!
It was Meh. We were a bit disappointed really. Great food but confusing menu even with explanation WE got it wrong and had to cancel and restart the order. The server was accommodating in that though.
Also we were with a reservation, stood not even greeted at the door for almost 10min with a server 10ft away at a table multiple times. Not even acknowledging us.
Really too bad. Went here pre-covid and the service and food were excellent then.
I hope they understand the constructive criticism to get it back to what it used to be. Lots of places will just argue back with sub-par reviews instead.
Food was pretty good, but the service left a lot to be desired. Our server was very cold and short, like she didn't have the time of day, even though we were one of two groups. Another table asked for her recommendation between two meats and all she had to say was, "well they're two different kinds of meats," so don't expect helpful or friendly service. The food was pretty good, a lot of pickled onion for my taste, but the meats themselves were good. The fried chicken drumsticks were huge without too much breading. Brisket was a little dry, not the melt-in-your-mouth kind. Overall I probably won't return but I'm glad we tried it.
I’ve been to many smokehouses in Canada and the US and the briskets offered here are the best I’ve ever had. They are so juicy and perfectly prepared its unreal. Let me start my review with food.
Food:
Briskets: as I said, the best ones I’ve had…ever. So juicy, full of flavour and perfectly cooked. You can tell that patience made these. 10/10…..
Fried chicken: I’ll start by saying that I’m not that much of a fried chicken fan. These are reaaallllyyy good. While the batter could use more of a southern kick, the chicken was brined so well that even the next day it was super juicy. 7/10….
Jerk Chicken: Being Caribbean, I can say that I do have some things to say. While I loved it, I think the seasoning had a little too much nutmeg in it. Don’t be afraid to turn up the heat a little bit! 9/10....
Buttermilk Biscuits: I didn’t have high expectations for these to begin with, but they did exceed them! The flavour was reminiscent of Georgia… BUT… they were a little on the dry side. If the restaurant is reading this, try to find a way to make them the steamy hearty goodness that is a southern biscuit. Unfortunately for that reason I give them 6/10
Mac and Cheese: The star of the show. So hearty, so cheesy, so good. I really enjoyed the brisket being in the dish, some other at my table didn’t. I guess to each their own. This mac and cheese is made how it should be. I’ve been to places that “specialize” in making it and didn’t have the flavour, texture and goodness that I had here. 10/10
Corn Bread: The staff had some extra Jalapeno corn bread that ended up not being served, so they gave it to us. I’ll say right now, I don’t like corn bread if it’s not sweet… this wasn’t sweet. I guess its my bias, but don’t let this stop you from trying it. 4/10 because there was a little flavor in it.
Service:
I forgot the name of the person serving us, but he was awesome. Some people may come in expecting high end service, and I think that’s how the staff is assuming people are coming in expecting as well. This is a smokehouse, when I go to a smokehouse I expect jokes, fun and love of food. Once he knew that we weren’t the type to be stuck up restaurant critics, he dropped the formalities and started joking with us, telling us what he likes and giving us his personal recommendations. The rest of the staff chimed in every so often and added to the over al experience. To the owner: You have chosen great people to run your restaurant. Kudos to you.
One complaint I have is where the drink list is. It’s a little awkward to have to stand in between people eating. But that’s because we were sitting on the far side of the restaurant.
My overall experience here: 10/10 I came from Brampton to visit this spot and would do it again without a doubt. If you’re looking for good smokehouse food – come here. Don’t go to Toronto.
Great brisket. One of the the best Mac & Cheese I've had. Friendly service. I've never had a bad meal here. I'll be back!
Ok, this was a WOW moment. Had to go to downtown Hamilton and saw a smoke house so hey why not. It was about 40C outside so it was not all that busy at lunch. I tried the Brisket sandwich. It blew me away. Apparently they smoke all their own meats. So it is local and fresh. My waitress Becky was really nice. I highly recommend this place.
Warning.. Toronto prices!! But Great quality and great service
My partner and I for lunch had a platter: 3 meats each two sides and two beers & coffee. $78 plus tip.
Jerk chicken was wonderfully complex in flavor. Best brisket ever!
This place was soo good food was so great tasting and so meny meats to try would deffitanly recomend for meat lovers ! Well deffitanly be back
At $29.00 per person + drinks for a two meat combo... I think it's way too expensive for what you get. Smoked Wings were good if not a bit on the cool side. Ribs were great but seemed to have a layer of clumpy dry rub present even think it was lightly sauced. Brisket was served like steak cuts. I've devoured pubs and pounds of brisket in Texas and never seen it served like this. Cornbread was good, coleslaw I would skip. Not a great eating adventure, but if you have the money some of it was tasty.
I'm by no means a barbecue expert, but I found Saltlick to be 100% delicious. The concept of serving their food on shareable platters was a neat idea and made the presentation a lot more picture worthy. It is quite intimidating to see all the food piled up before you. They have quite a few options for meats and sides, and while everything was solidly done, a few choices really stood out. The pork belly nuggets, with all their fatty and crunchy goodness, are a fat man's candy and will help you to become one too. The cauliflower, and the sauce it was tossed in, was actually awesome and there was a healthy portion of it too. And, of course, I would consider the brisket mac n' cheese a must order. I definitely wasn't ashamed of the copious amounts of food I gobbled up here.
Crayfish boil was fun for the family! First time most of us had crayfish and they also served shrimp, sausages, potatoes, coleslaw, corn, bread, in giant quantities poured on the main countertop. All you can eat and the seasoning made lunch even more tasty. Most people were full within an hour. I don't think crayfish is normally on their menu so I bought their smoked brisket separately and the smokey flavour was incredible.
Highly recommend!!! The food is amazing for meat lovers. The service was great!! The atmosphere was very relaxed and they were clearly closing and the servers didn't make us feel rushed to leave. All round fantastic experience 👍👍
Really enjoyed going here for a friend's birthday. The food was fantastic. It's served family style which is a nice way to serve dinner. Everything was cooked perfectly. They have a great local beer menu and their cocktails are delicious. Our server was very friendly.
My hubby and I came here hoping to having lunch at around noon but unfortunately they had a brunch menu still going. I’ve been wanting to try the food here so we stayed and ordered. My hubby had the Chef’s skillet special which was duck eggs benny and I had the spicy mayo brisket sandwich. My husband loved the duck. He thought it was super delicious. My sammie was good although the brisket tasted a little dry in some parts but overall it was WELL seasoned and crispy and just so yummy. Our waitress was fantastic, great customer service and very knowledgeable. Ill definitely be back here to try the the lunch/dinner menu. Must try, highly recommend.
We tried this amazing place out today and WOW the service, atmosphere and food was fantastic. I highly recommend the Nashville chicken sandwich. We were extremely satisfied with our service from Cindy - thank you! We will be sure to come back soon.
Man.. was such a good spot. As a continuous over tipper to this location, also bringing many newbies all the time. I booked a table confidently for a date night. Was basically brushed off at first after arriving, which is fine as I can tell you’re busy. I left and came back giving you time. Waiter clearly saw us standing in line and allowed people with bookings after us to dine first. Food is so good so this such a shame. More money in my pocket now though. I’d give 1 star due to being angry but that’s not how this location usually operates.
Great spot for lunch or dinner. Dinner menu starts around 4pm. Brisket sandwich was outstanding. Second time being here, and food is as amazing as I remember it the first time. Service was prompt and friendly.
Came here on a Saturday afternoon for a later lunch. It was quiet so service was pretty quick and friendly. I had the Pork Shoulder Sandwich w/ a house salad and the pork was great. Not overcooked and nice portions. The price is pretty fair compared to some other neighbours on James. Will definitely come again.
Friendly service, really great portions - we couldn't finish it all and had a very good time. Food is not cheap but the quality of the food and the portions show why. Just note the following: ordering is by shared table, and you cannot order à la carte. That means everyone must agree to the number of meat dishes you want and which ones. If you're not into sharing, this is not the place for you. No dessert but there's a Portugese bakery down the street that's amazing so have a nice walk after your meal. We had the Brisket (melt in the mouth, juicy), Bourbon maple ribs, brisket mac & cheese, flank steak, smoked wings (I was surprised how good the wings were) and the corn bread. Definite winners were the brisket and wings. I am more of a fan of sweet corn bread than savoury but everyone else seemed to enjoy it. Go early as they do run out of stuff.
Great menu and prices, even better food! I also love the occasional tasting menus they offer that serve up some very unique fare.
Great service and food at Saltlick Smokehouse. Keitan is a great waiter and very friendly advice of the menu and the good places to go in there area for drinks and other restaurants… I will go back there for sure
Pretty damn solid! Their brisket and taters are great. The ribs came out a tad dry but I've been here 3 times now from Mississauga, and it's the only average dish I've had. The pork belly nuggets are a delight to!
We normally would choose Salt Lick over any other restaurant in the city, but when I ordered on Father's Day we had a bad experience. Food was late honestly no biggie I know its a crazy day for them. Had to wait in the sun outside since I drove from the mountain and wasn't going to drive and come back, but hey again it's our fave so it would be worth it. When I did get the food 45 minutes late no sorry or free bread, again not a huge deal but us toner service is important in mix ups like this. Got the food home and I have to say something has changed, it's not the same quality or taste. They changed sausages and corn bread and the food was just okay (meh) now. Sad-cause this place was top 3 of all time.
After hearing great feedback and seeing delicious looking pictures, I needed to see for myself if the food tasted as amazing as it looks. The dinner menu is unique. You order based on number of meats and number of sides. They have three options: 3 meats and 2 sides ($29/person), 4 meats and 2 sides ($35/person), and 5 meats and 2 sides ($38/person). No matter which option you choose, the amount of each type of meat served is dependent on the number of people in your dinner party. I went with one other person and dedcided to go with the 3 meats and 2 sides option. We ordered the beef brisket, bourbon-maple back ribs, pork belly tacos, brisket mac ‘n cheese, and the tangy slaw. Wow....what an amazing dinner we had. The meat was both tender and tasty, the atmosphere was awesome, and the service was outstanding. This place will surely satisfy your meat craving. I would highly recommend it and I will definitely be back.
Such a treat! The closest thing to “real southern BBQ”. We have multiple food allergies so ordering in is always a challenge. The staff at Saltlick are super knowledgeable in regards to safe foods for our family, package items separately, and even label the “unsafe” sauces so there is no confusion. Definitely a pricier meal, but always with it. We have never been disappointed!
Food was beyond amazing … we had a platter. Kinda pricey per person but I was full for days . The brisket was definitely my favourite.
We had two sandwiches with the mac and cheese and jalapeno corn bread. The mac and cheese was good and so was the jalapeno corn bread (not spicy). The brisket sandwich was absolutely amazing!!! Highly recommended. We were there for a very late lunch on Saturday so it was not busy at all. It can get busy Friday and Saturday evening. We would definitely come back!
The brisket was extremely good and so was the jerk chicken, however the ribs we had were too tough and chewy to enjoy.
It would be nice if they had menus on the tables as well, it is hard to read the menu boards from certain tables. We took a photo of the menu boards and went back to our table to review it. (Otherwise you are standing in the middle of the place reading the wall. Pricing is mid-high range for the motif.
My friends and I all loved. The food was very good and the service was quick. They also have an interesting selection of beers on tap as well. Staff is friendly serves with a smile.
Little sis visited me from Toronto & treated me to some fine grub at 7:30PM. The resos went without a hitch & our Easter Sunday was a memorably fattening one. Thank you, Melissa & everyone else at this fine establishment! Perhaps the flat iron steak was a touch too medium (sis & I usually prefer rare) but it was still the most tender steak I’ve ever had. The bokchoy accompanying it was perfectly cooked/seasoned. The brisket mac & cheese (the pasta part) was a bit too soft but enjoyable nonetheless. I loved the BBQ sauce on the back ribs & hugely enjoyed the southern fried drums. The dip for the chicken was spicy & perfectly palate-cleansing/grease-cutting. Coleslaw was fantastic (not too sweet/salty/tart)! All in all, a very worthwhile endeavour. Look forward to bringing my boyfriend here!
Service was good. We tried the crawfish boil and left disappointed. It was very expensive. Sure, you get lots of food.. but we found the shrimp to be tough and the crawfish smelled and tasted odd. Maybe we just aren’t fans of crawfish in general as it seemed that others were enjoying it.
We tried Saltlick yesterday for lunch on a whim while out for a walk and were SO impressed by everything! We ended up trying the brisket sandwiches which are MASSIVE for only $13 and amazing (we could only eat 1 and saved the other), a small side of mac n cheese and the crispy brussel sprouts. Only $5/side and the chef threw in an extra mac n cheese! The staff working were wonderful and for the price and quality we will definitely go back!
Can’t say enough about Pappy’s Friend Chicken. It was the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The pieces were all a good size and very meaty. It was not greasy at all. It was ready at my alloyed pick up time and service was very friendly. They safety precautions because of Covid-19 made you feel safe and secure. If you are on the fence about trying this don’t hesitate, you won’t be disappointed!!
First time and we'll definitely be back. Food was delicious
Excellent smoked meat. The brisket is the best I have had in Canada. The jerk chicken is really good as well. This was first time and we will be back.
True Jerk Chicken! This food was amazing and the service was great. Good selection of beers. We had the 3 meats and 2 sides for the two of us and could have fed 3 of us. We will be back...
This place is a lot of fun! The waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. we ate late so they were out of some of the more popular items but we still had a fantastic meal. I strongly recommend checking this place out. Be warned... You will leave smelling like a barbecue.
Food was amazing; rich and flavourful. Duck was exquisite. Presentation was good. Drink selection was excellent. Small place. Reservations highly recommended. Plates range in price. 4 meats, 2 sides was $29/person with several other "quantity" options. Food is served family style. Would like to see larger sides; If it weren't for that I would give 5-star.
First time tasting crawfish! It was a really cool experience at Saltlick and I understand why they sell out fast. The sausages and cornbread were really tasty. Great atmosphere.
Best BBQ in Hamilton, everything slow-smoked in house. Love the brisket, ribs, jerk chicken, mac & cheese. Lunch is a good deal if you're looking for value, bigger selection at dinner time. They put out a whole smoked hog Fridays at lunchtime. Good selection of local craft beer & cider.
Great service and amazing flavours for those who really enjoy meat. Platters are served family style- you pick 3, 4 or 5 types of meat and the sides for a set price per person. We did 4 types and ordered sirloin, fried hot chicken, brisket and ribs with spicy beans and mac n cheese sides (plus deep fried brussel sprouts). Everything was delicious and portion was plentiful- took home two boxes of leftovers. Extra barriers up around tables for shielding during pandemic.
I went there on a Saturday night some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. God bless this place !!! Sincerely Kent
I can honestly say I never leave reviews on restaurants, but this one was so worth it I had to! Everything from the food to the service from staff was incredible. The food was the best BBQ I have ever had, and the sharing platter concept was absolutely genius. I specifically wanted to mention one staff member, K10. From the start he made our experience there enjoyable, he was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He was extremely attentive and made our experience there that much better. My partner and I at one point thought he was actually the owner! Overall the whole experience made the hour drive out there 100% worth it! I have already recommended family and friends, and I will definitely be back. Keep up the amazing work!! :-)
Quite good. Steer clear of the 'drumsticks' - brisket is tasty. The slaw is not that great - could be much better.
There is no kitchen exhaust ventilation hood so you wind up smelling like BBQ pork - wear your old clothes. Not used to seeing free flowing beards on cooks in the kitchen - hair in the food?
Not sure about accessibility - though in 2017 this should not be a question at all.
They seem to try.
The food here is terrific, but one thing: I really, really hope Saltlick makes its menu consistent across all ordering platforms; they all seem to have different dishes, with some options available on one platform that aren’t available on the others.
This is especially challenging because my roommate is vegetarian and the few vegetarian options Saltlick offers are scattered randomly across the ordering platforms.
Again, the food here is great, but ordering can be kinda messy.
Love the food, finally made it in for brunch, it was fantastic. We had the biscuit and it was amazing. The brisket was one of the best I've ever had.
Great food, fast & friendly service. Small venue, so make reservations. They'll accommodate you if they can.
Great atmosphere. Our server was fantastic, energetic, friendly and funny. The food, WOW! Tender, juicy meats with delicious sides, and the portions were MASSIVE! I left stuffed and with take out containers. I cannot wait to go again.
Listen, I love BBQ and when my husband said this place came recommended to him I said: "Let's do it!"
I can't begin to tell you how amazing the food was. We order the 3 types of meat with 2 sides: steak, bbq smoked pork, and brisket. For the 2 sides, we did buttermilk biscuits and beans. Just thinking of this meal is making my mouth water.
At the time we thought we should order more food, but it was just the right amount for us with leftovers.
The brisket melted in your mouth it was that good and the biscuits were warm and fresh.
When I'm in the area next I will for sure be stopping by for another meal.
The food was incredible and our server was super friendly. The restaurant was super smoky inside, maybe they had some ventilation problems? You can get similar quality BBQ at other restaurants for a lot less money, but I would still recommend this place if you feel like splurging. Tip: ask for an extra side of BBQ sauce.
I was truly surprised with their dishes, they use advance technology control to slow roast their meats.. great food and great presentation
Everything was delicious, especially the jerk chicken. The style of serving a large platter for sharing means you get to try many different delicious meats.
Food is delicious, kitchen was quick, and service was great! Highly recommend sitting out on the patio on a nice summer evening. Definitely will be coming back!
Honestly, I was letdown by Saltlick. I'm not sure if it was an off day or just late on a Friday but everything seemed to be lackluster. Food came out promptly with appropriate family style portions but everything seemed to be missing a certain flavour. I'll give them another shot eventually but after reading other reviews and hearing friends testimonies I expected much more. I wouldn't suggest not going, but Saltlick definitely doesn't get a standing ovation from me.
Food is delicious but is more on the salty side. Good to go once in awhile for a treat but not a weekly go to place. Dinner menu is slightly expensive but lunch is definitely more affordable and get a good bang for your buck!
Great food, lively atmosphere and friendly service. Lots of great craft brews on tap as well. Enjoy!
This was my first time having dinner here ....was very impressed with the way the staff embraced my business. They were very happy to serve my party even a little late everything from the food and the staff was very inviting thank y so much for the hospitality highly recommend
Nice place, ribs were excellent, a bit pricey and I can't put my own BBQ sauce on the meat. Picture shows the 3 meat, 2 sides size
Good place to eat, delicious food and excellent customer service by Keitan.
My love for Saltlick began with a random craving from my gf for Mac and Cheese. We were new in town and decided to just see what came up on Uber Eats and Saltlick piqued our interest with their 'Nice to Meet You' platter that promised a little bit of everything. It knocked our socks off. I was especially impressed by their fried chicken which is juicy, smoky and crunchy and comes with a perfectly balanced sweet and spicy sauce. And for the amount of food you get (enough for two to get a full dinner) the value of the platter is top notch. The food is so good that I often have to force myself not to buy it more than once a week. I just finished eating their fried chicken legs and am trying to find reasons not to order it again.
I can't wait to go and sit down in their restaurant to try their food fresh from the kitchen.
I'd also recommend the smoked pork if fried chicken isn't your thing.
Amazing meat! God was great! Service was great! Little place but worth it!!
Very very delicious. I ate here for the 1st time this afternoon and it was such a treat! My husband and I did a curbside pickup and travelled 20 mins back home to eat it and it was still amazing, so I can only imagine how much more delicious it will be once we can dine in. The brisket was savoury and tender. The fried chicken was moist and crunchy with a tasty dipping sauce! Worth every penny!
Came here for my birthday a while ago. Definitely a good place for a small group. Great experience and I love how the menu works! The ribs were a bit too smokey for my taste, but everything else was absolutely delicious. I definitely ate too much but it was totally worth it!
Very delicious meats. The wings and drumsticks were delicious. The pork belly tacos were unreal. Will be back!
Had dinner with some friends the other night and it was the best food I’ve had. Nashville Hot chicken was just the perfect amount of spice and crunchy batter, and the BBQ Pork just falls apart in your mouth. The Brisket Mac n Cheese and Spicy beans had way more flavour than I thought.
All around fantastic food and great service. A little slow getting around to tables but will definitely be going back here.
First time going there last night and what a treat! Music was not too loud, atmosphere was right, the drinks and food were superb and on par! The sides were made just right, and then meat full of flavor! Jill, our server was outstanding as well and made the night that much more fun for myself and my fiance. Will definitely be back.
I took the family in to their farmer’s market location to try the brisket on a bun. We ordered them with just the meat and BBQ sauce, so we could really judge the meat (normally comes with spicy mayo and slaw). I have to say, a new addiction has been formed. This meat is wonderfully smoked to perfection and priced right. The amazing aftertaste lasted a long time, and it was less greasy than a lot of briskets I have had. Absolute kudos, we will be back many times.
An incredible experience. Sat at the bar and got to see right into the kitchen and all the action. The food was amazing and our party of four had not a single complaint. The staff were very friendly and the chef was a great guy who even let us sample some bison loin that melted in your mouth. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place. I will be back again and again.
The place was founded by my wife and we made it a stop on our way to Niagara Falls. The decor and the servers are great. It is most definitely a very warm and home food feel. The people who served us was great the food was where we think can be improved on. Meaning the sauce mix and seasoning that they use are to perfection considering my wife and I are foodies we have an expectation and it may be just our personal preference. But our Ribs were quite tangy and hard, where our concept of Ribs typically are soft and tender. But again their sauce and seasoning are out of this world. Their famous fried chicken also taste great but it went as far as the ski. And the meat is virtually tasteless if you missed it with the deep-fried exterior. So overall we think the place was great and the food was season great just the cooking we had some issue with but it could be just us. Overall I think anybody would love this place for the food and atmosphere! Cheers!
I first came to Salt lick as part of a media brunch.
I was able to try many different dishes, and absolutely loved the Nashville hot chicken sandwich! The second time I came I had the jerk chicken and it was super tasty with a nice kick to it, great if you like spice.
I do not eat red meat, but there are a few amazing chicken options that I have been more than impressed with. I also had a side of coleslaw and it was awesome. Not to mention that the service was great and super friendly. I will be back!
Best brisket I've ever had. Ribs were great too. Excellent service on their nice patio.
Words cannot describe our phenomenal experience.
Every last bite had us wanting more (not because we ran out of food!) We had every expectation blown away. Everything from the quality and quantity, we couldn't stop ourselves.
The quality resonated through the food to the service, Katen* (K-10) had us fooled as a partner/investor given his passion. He was "only the bartender" in his words but our experience gave us a much deeper impression.
Anybody looking for a quality bbq joint, from newbies to veterans or home BBQ hunters, this is worth the stop.
Can't say I've ever left a review of an establishment on Google, this location motivated me to do just that.
First time here and I was hoping for a salty atmosphere. He had the meat mountain sandwich which was a big sandwich filled with lots of flavor. I had the jerk chicken tacos. Now before warned.... The jerk chicken is very spicy and I am from the carribean and I love spice. Most places say their food is spicy but this actually spicy. I could taste the scotch bonnet peppers. It was very delicious. I will definitely be back to sample more of this menu. I really enjoyed my meal... Great service
The food was absolutely fantastic but i ultimately left disappointed. The atmosphere was very nice. Our waitress was very good and attentive as well. Unfortunately i feel the food is over priced and portions are a little small for 30 a person. its good food but not 30$ a person. It would be better if you had quite a bit of people going cause they portion it out all together family style so you would get more all together. With four people i dont think its worth it cause you wont leave full.
Tried a few southern style places in Hamilton and this is by far my favourite. Great fried chicken. Amazing sides. Large portions. Delcious draft beer and cocktails. Very happy with my meal and service.
A friend suggested this place so I went with no expectations. None of us realized that the ordering and serving format was communal, but our server Keitan was really helpful and patient.
To try and help future customers, basically your table will decide how many meat dishes you collectively want (3-5 or more), along with two sides, then you each pay a set amount. The cooks will scale the servings to your party size.
The atmosphere and decor were spot on, with lighting dim enough to be comfortable but not pitch black. We sat at a big table with church pew benches, which was neat.
The food came out on butcher block slabs, laid out nicely. We had the ribs, smoked sausage, spicy fried chicken, and brisket. The ribs and chicken were all-stars, the flavouring spot-on and fall off the bone tender.
The sausage was a little too salty to be savoury, and the brisket was something of a disappointment because of how tough the texture was, but the sides came through and gave an overall great impression of the place.
A lot of everything on one order.
A must try!
You will NOT walk away hungry.
The price is high but well worth it. Amazing all around food and drink. I wouldn’t order the bacon wrapped bacon again as it was fatty but that’s just me! Brussel sprouts, beans, corn bread, chicken, ribs, brisket it was all beyond good. The drinks were deadly in the best way
Getting this quality and consistency of Bar-B-Que is extremely difficult in Canada. They guys at the Saltlick have legit cooking skills.
The only options that come close would be Camp in Paris Ontario, or the Stock Yards in Toronto.
The Saltlick will put together a 5 meat platter that will BLOW YOUR Mind.
Even better reasonable prices for the quality and amount of work that goes into preparing this fine grub.
You can not go wrong by going to the SaltLick. Just remember, good things take time, be patient, the the chief do his work. It will be worth the wait!
The portions are huge and the price reflects that. Everything was extremely tasty, with a distinct difference in flavours. Even after four of us stuffed ourselves to the brim, we had enough leftovers for 2 large takeout containers. I need a nap.
Highly recommended. We had the 5 meats and 2 sides, well worth the price. Loved the beans but they were quite spicy which was a bit of a surprise. Brisket was amazing. Staff was great.
I absolutely loved it here. The atmosphere, staff, and drinks were all wonderful!
Went for a date where we got four meat items and the sides. More than we could eat in the sitting. Everything was delicious with a special shout out to the pork belly nuggets!
I will happily beb going again.
Boss Hamilton restaurant with an impressive dedication to meat. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience.
The prices are really expensive for the quality of food. Being from Montreal I know I could get way better, more fresh and local products handmade daily for that price or less. I went home with really bad heart burn and indigestion. The portions were great, server was great. The resturant needs better ventilation because the oil smell just sits in the air. Has potential but could improve some things!
Such a unique restaurant in downtown Hamilton bringing something new to the industry! I loved every bite and will be back again for sure! I love that they also have an outdoor patio in the summer! If you haven't been, you must go and try everything on the menu!
Very cool place, great quality food, simple ingredients, with no extra floof on the menu!
Amazing food. Little problem with our order, provide the a different side and meat than we had ordered. They corrected the order and let us keep the different side and meat at no charge. The food itself was delicious. The pork belly taco and the bbq brisket real stand outs. The root beer and beans where and unexpected combination that was satisfying. Went to the restaurant with 18 month daughter and the restaurant is family friendly. The biscuits are a must have too. I don't like biscuits, but I am starting to realize I've only had bad ones. The quality of food and service made this a restaurant you won't regret visiting.
Very nice and quaint place, and the service was really good. The food was served like any other mainstream hipster smokehouse (meats on a wooden platter and your menu is on a chalkboard lol). We then got to pick out portions we wanted as everything was shared. Food quality seemed really good and it was cooked on point of delicious, though, the brisket was a bit to fatty for my tastes, but the jerk chicken was balanced in flavor. It was not jaw dropping amazing though with the price of it being $35!!! That was a downside.
After a number of visits in over a year, I think I have tried everything that I would enjoy on the menu. So, I think you would find the same. Quality food and drink with pleasant service. Unlike some other barbeque places, the focus is on the flavour of the food, not lots of sauces to hide perhaps lower quality ingredients. Take your time and savour whatever you order.
Place was super busy but the waiter still managed to be attentive. Interesting format with the price being per person based on how many meat platters you get. We ordered pork side ribs, slow cooked BBQ pork, brisket, Southern fried chicken and jerk chicken tacos. The brisket and the fried chicken were fantastic. Definitely would come here again.
This place was amazing! My date and I got the brisket, jerk chicken, steak, ribs, Mac and cheese, and jalapeño cornbread. Every single thing we had was outstanding. The brisket was like butter, the chicken was moist and flavourful, the Mac and cheese was creamy.. I went in with mediocre expectations and I was thoroughly impressed. For 2 of us it cost just under $100 including tip, so it was quite expensive but it was worth it. We will definitely be back here!!
The hot chicken was the perfect amount of spicy, the mac and cheese had more flavour then you would expect and the homemade sausages were some of the most delicious sausages I have ever eaten! Can't wait to bring people back! BTW the portion sizes are perfect!
Smoked brisket. The best Mac & Cheese I've had. This restaurant has been in our repertoire of restaurants during quarantine. Highly recommend!
Food is amazing.. nothing fancy about the place. You will be there just to taste some of the best old school smoked meat. Staff are friendly. It simply worth it
So we ordered the meat platter consisting of 3 meats and 2 sides for $27 a person. The price is a set price and they give you enough food according to how many people are sharing the platter. I eat a LOT so I was a bit nervous but when the platter came, but the portions were more than generous! We got the Nashville hot chicken, smoked BBQ pulled pork, and beef brisket along with brisket mac
Very good. Food was excellent and service was excellent. Portion sizes were good for our party of four (3 meats and 2 sides) though the option is there to choose more meats for bigger appetites.
We thought the value was good, the quality of the food was certainly worth the money and we walked away satisfied on all counts.
The restaurant might benefit from some sort of printed menu as glare can make their boards hard to read from certain angles, but our server was happy to fill in what we couldn't read ourselves.
Amazing restaurant. Really cool vibe inside. Cocktails were delicious and a great selection of craft brews. Meat and sides served family style. Presentation was awesome. The pork belly nuggets are a must get. Our server was genuinely interested in making our experience a great one. Definitely check it out!
Delicious homemade food. Large portions. Their pulled pork and southern fried chicken, well are the meat is delicious!
There Mac and cheese is amazing as well. You won't be disappointed!
AMAZING. Great crawfish boil. We will be back
Visited Salt Lick on the weekend with some friends.
Atmosphere is good, and because its a fairly small place it always seems busy inside.
The way you order in this place is you order the number of different meat types you want and then you chose 2 side dishes. The amount of each choice you get is proportioned to the number of people at your table.
We ordered 4 meats with 2 sides and ordered an extra side.
Our choices were:
Brisket - fantastic, cooked to perfection and extremely tasty
Flat Iron Steak - again amazing, cooked to medium
Chicken drumstick - Very large drumsticks, but not very good in my mind
Jerk Chicken - this was my favourite dish. If you like super hot jerk you will be disappointed. I found it to be just the right spiciness for me. I couldn't get enough!
Our sides were:
Brisket Mac & Cheese - good, but barely any brisket in it. Felt ripped off
Southern Bisquits - just okay...should come with butter but doesn't
Coleslaw - don't waste your money. Basic coleslaw, and at an extra $2/person definitely not worth it.
We waited a very long time for our food. It didn't bother us much since we were all chatting and having a good time. I honestly think they forgot our order. I saw the manager and waitress looking at our table and saying something. My only complaint here is if you know our order is delayed come by and let us know, rather than keep us wondering what's going on. On that note, our waitress didn't seem like a people person anyway.
Drinks were super expensive. A glass of wine was $12 and I am not sure what I paid for a small pint of beer.
One other thing I didn't like was that the kitchen is right there among the seating area and there are no exhaust fans over the cooking areas. It was very smoky and my clothes smelled like smoke when I got home. I am not sure how that's even allowed in a restaurant.
Anyway, this is a place worth checking out. The food is very good. Just remember to bring lots of $$$ as it is not a cheap place to eat.
Portions were a really good size, and the food was phenomenal. I had to wait 15 minutes, but the food was very fresh and delicious. I will definitely be back!
My favourite place to dine in Hamilton. If you’re a meat-lover you’ll leave here full and satisfied. Their pork belly nuggets and jerk chicken tacos are incredible. The brisket is always good as are the buttermilk fried chicken drumsticks. Their salads are all great options as sides. Not a drinker but they’ve a long list of beers sure to satisfy the beer lovers. It’s not a stuffy atmosphere so wear some clothes you don’t care about because you will leave smelling like a smokehouse (which some people might view as a positive). Staff is always very friendly.
Adequate service. Came here for lunch around 12p and they did not have biscuits or cornbread. Got the Pork platter. Brisket was boiled meat with BBQ sauce drizzled over it. We added fried chicken drumstick on the size for $4 per piece. Their menu said they have Nashville hot chicken but server admitted it was really their jerk chicken - not authentic Nashville hot chicken. Place is clean and visually appealing.
We went for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was busy and we waited a bit for a table which was very much expected. However, When we got seated it took a long time (10-15mins) for our server to come over and say hello. Than it took her even longer to grab us water and take our orders. This whole process took about 30 minutes! We think she was a new server by our observations throughout the night but on the plus side she was very pleasant. The food was good. We had the brisket, pork belly tacos and the ribs. The pork belly tacos were fried to perfection; really good. The beef brisket needed more BBQ sauce and when we asked for it, we got it when we were pretty much done and ready to leave. The ribs were good, maybe too much sauce on them. The sides (from what we were able to choose from) we got the Mac and cheese and beans. The beans were so spicy that we couldn't taste the rest of the food we were eating; we sent them back and got the house salad which was just greens with carrot shavings and some dressing. The Mac and cheese was a delight. Not soupy saucy with a nice crunch on top. Overall, we've had better BBQ elsewhere. We wouldn't go out of our way to go back but out of all the BBQ spots in Hamilton that we've tried, this is the best one.
Fantastic food. Delicious chicken fried steak, jerk chicken was very nice. Brisket Mac and cheese was great. Everything tasted proper. Great service, the guy who served my table was awesome. Was a bit on the pricey side. I will go back for sure though.
Food 5/5
Service 5/5
Value 3/5
Best BBQ this part of town. We had the Korean BBQ that was to die for with Beef Brisket cooked for 14 hrs and Southern Fried Drumstick that had a mouth watering coating. The sauces that came with the Korean BBQ and the Drumsticks were rightly picked and went very well. For sides we had their red potatoes mashed with cheese and Sesame Brussels Sprouts..who knew Brussels Sprouts would taste so good. Wine pairing offered was the right pick. I will be back for sure. Very friendly service, good food and prices are very reasonable. Great place for BBQ and meat lovers!
Amazing food, professional staff and fun atmosphere. Definitely on the pricey side but the food is tasty and the portions are worth it. This is my once and a while bbq place, but I always enjoy going.
Only downside is there is almost nothing that doesn't have meat in it, which I actually have an issue with at bbq places. I like meat but even I need something on the side that's just veg or grain. It would be a full 5 stars if they changed this aspect.
Otherwise a great place to eat.
Great food and the server was really funny. Had a great meal with Friends and would definitely go again. Had the tacos and they had a nice balance of spice and sweat. Only thing that was a disappointment is they don't don't take Amex.
I've been a few times with various group sizes and enjoy the way you order food on a board depending on your group. The sides are all very delicious and the various meats were well finished. The patio was nice to sit on in the summer and they keep good options of craft beer avaliable.
We do not regret choosing this smokehouse on our stop through Hamilton. Great service, and incredible tasting smoked meats! Highly recommend the Brisket Mac 'n Cheese as a side
Table order only, not individual plates. Brisket was good, not a fan of the bbq pork. Even though the food was decent, I found it to be a little pricey for what you receive. Tried it, probably won't be back.
Get in touch with your inner carnivore. If you love BBQ and meat, this is the place to eat in Hamilton. Everything is served family style on a cutting board, so bring your friends and enjoy the feast. It can seem pricey, but you get tons of food.
Amazing experience at this restaurant, very nice people. Even went as far as coming after me, meeting me at my car and making sure I had everything I needed to enjoy my meal. Aside from the tasty meal, stelar customer service will always bring me back to a place.
Definitely recommend going here if you feel like BBQ. Service was great, beer selection was good. The Pork Belly Nuggets and the smashed potato side are a must have, excellent! We also had the jerk chicken tacos, side ribs, korean beef short ribs and southern chicken drumsticks which were all pretty good. The root beer beans could use a little more smoke flavour to offset the root beer and the slaw just wasn't great, should have gotten the Mac N Cheese.
Amazing food, the pork belly nuggets were especially unreal, and the Mac and cheese was perfect. The family style eating was also a fun way to do dinner with friends. Only downside is that it is definitely pretty expensive.
Great cozy spot with amazing BBQ and great service, 4.5/5 !
SERVICE
Me and my girlfriend decided to make a day trip to Hamilton where we stopped by here after hearing the great reviews. We sat inside on a barely packed Friday afternoon and were greeted by Melissa, the server. She was more than helpful and did an amazing job breaking down the menu for us and how it worked. She made sure to keep checking on us and she had a great energy! Also, we loved how they give a gum piece(instead of a mint or candy) at the end of the meal, freshened us right up!
FOOD & DRINK
So we ordered the meat platter consisting of 3 meats and 2 sides for $27 a person. The price is a set price and they give you enough food according to how many people are sharing the platter. I eat a LOT so I was a bit nervous but when the platter came, but the portions were more than generous! We got the Nashville hot chicken, smoked BBQ pulled pork, and beef brisket along with brisket mac and cheese and tangy slaw. I am not lying when I tell you, every bite we had was delicious! The fried chicken was cooked perfectly and was juicy and tender, the brisket melted In our mouths and the smoked BBQ pork was so juicy and fatty. Don't expect regular pulled pork though, they pull the pork so the pieces are still big and chunky , so you get lots of good crispy skin in there too! The slaw was a pretty good slaw but that brisket mac and cheese was TO DIE FOR! So savoury and creamy , we wished we had a double order of it. To wash everything down we had their new brew on tap (I forgot what it was called now) but it tasted like a better Heineken!
Me and my girlfriend were thoroughly pleased and surprised that Hamilton had such a great bbq smokehouse and will definetely come back to try out their dinner menu (which had items like back ribs, steak , jalapeno cornbread and more!)
Food is consistent, coffee is great, servers are pleasant, it is clean. and the menu... Well if you like meat this is the place to go.
Chicken and waffles brunch is pretty off the hook. Some brunches are very busy pretty sure they can take reservations.
Great serving idea! Like a picnic with friends.
Excellent flavors and portion size. Ordered 4 meats and 2 sides for 4 people and still took home leftovers. No desserts offered. Service was prime!
I have wanted to go here for a while. The wait was worth it. Awesome atmosphere. Good selection of drinks. And amazing food! We had the flat iron steak, pork tacos, jerk chicken, mac and cheese and house salad, all of it was perfect. I will be going back again.
Good food, not the best area (a little grungy looking) . We went for a late dinner (6:30pm) on a weekend and the place was empty. We were told it was due to an event that day that was being held nearby. The meat selection was great and all of the meats (prepared in the back of the house) were delicious. But the veg and sides (prepared in the front of house) were under cooked and a bit bland. All in all the food was really good, the atmosphere was decent and the prices were reasonable.
Food is amazing. Service is good. Would love to give it 5 stars if it weren't for the utterly RIDICULOUS pricing. BBQ is about taking cheap cuts of meat and making them delicious, it should never have a $30-$40 entry fee to access it.
Every experience is wonderful. Not that you have to but to lower table wait times please help the staff out an make a reservation. Food is served family style and always hot and cooked to perfection. A perfect place to eat to satisfy your inner carnivore. The coctails are pretty fresh too.
It was OK. Honestly , I'm not impressed, the brisket was too dry and too small, beef bbq ribs were also too dry and with not much meat left on them. I would actualy serve it Hot sizzling if I was doing it and maybe get more than just one bottle of "Tabasco" for an entire place. Please step up guys , seriously. Maybe hire more than one server , so it will be more manageable. 3 stars only for an effort but I wouldn't come back.
Unreal food served in a communal style. Rates are per person, depending on how many mains you select. Ranges from $29-38 per person and they will serve a larger portion depending on how many people are dining. Great BBQ and southern comfort with a twist.
Ill admit that the $30 minimum was a hindrance at first, I quickly realized that the atmosphere and spirits of staff were amazing. Always good to see staff proud and attentive.
Though I normally wouldnt spend 30 on a meal, the amount you get back into return is certainly worth it. Bbq pork, ribs and brisket with macncheese/ salade for side was decent, brisket was above average and ribs really melted in your mouth. I would say less fat on the bbq pork but they were beyond tender. I wish it was more wheelchair accessible than it is so more people could enjoy. To the owners " keep up the good work and let your staff know too!"
Great food that offers 100% exactly what the menus says. No extra sauces or hidden surprises. Might seem a touch on the expensive side, but if you know how much work goes in to truly good BBQ, it's pretty reasonable.
I had the 5-Meat Platter... absolutely delicious and filling! Amazing BBQ place, a must if you're in or near Hamilton!
One of my best dining experiences in Hamilton! This is definitely not a place you want to go to alone as everything on the menu follows a very interesting sharing concept. You pick 3, 4 or 5 meats (different price ranges) and they come with 2 sides and both you and the other people with you are charged for it per person. They have different categories of meats - pork, beef and poultry. Meats were perfectly cooked and tender - even the chicken breast that we ordered was surprisingly grilled to perfection. Their Mac n Cheese, which is offered as a side, was definitely my favorite and I'm not even a big Mac n Cheese fan. Would definitely recommend this place for an enjoyable yet inexpensive dining experience!
We visited as a party of 6 on a Monday evening. Although the food was generally good, the service was atrociously slow and the food took forever to arrive. No effort was made to offer extra drinks, and it seemed impossible to get anyones attention.
The ordering was very awkward, as they insist that everyone has the same order. This makes it rather difficult to accommodate varying appetites and preferences.
Although tasty, it seemed very expensive for the portions we received, and the service was a long way from deserving of the 18% minimum tip.
If you're looking for local BBQ, I'd suggest you'd do better visiting Barque in Burlington. We visited later in the week and enjoyed a much better experience.
Go hungry all, and dont forget to wear your stretchy pants!!! I havent been this pleased with a local Hamilton restaurant in a long time! The staff was friendly and welcoming right off the hop!! A very comfy, laid back atmosphere with limited seating! The food was out of this park amazing! Generous portions, served family style that was brimming with sweet southern, and Bold Smokey flavours that will keep you coming back again and again!
We had the Flat iron steak, Smoked ribs, Southern fried chicken, Brisket, mac and cheese and the homemade buscuits. **Make reservation a head of time!!
Get the pork belly nuggets and the southern fried chicken. You will not regret it. The jalapeño cornbread was great.
The coleslaw was great, tangy as advertised.
The brisket Mac and cheese was not our favourite choice.
Needed a reservation to sit at the table but great beer on tap and great amount of good food for the price
After hearing the brunch we awesome, we popped in this morning. We've had dinner here...priced per person based on the # of meat choices and served on boards for sharing...all exceptionally delicious. Back to brunch...they are individually plated. We had the chicken & waffles (excellent) and I had the Brisket Benny. The chef told me this morning that they decided to shred/pull the Brisket instead of slicing. Pulled it sliced, it was amazing. Eggs poached perfectly. Meat and egg was served on your choice of (housemade) biscuits or cornbread. Meat was dressed with BBQ sauce and the eggs dressed with hollandaise. What a combo. Excellent, friendly service too. And Sunday brunch with $3.50 mimosas? What? You gotta go. Now.
Brilliant place! I am not a fan of pork at all. The waitress recommended the pork Belly Sandwich and I was like why not. My God it was one of the best sandwich I have ever had. Just superb. Everything else I tired was phenomenal. This is worth going out of your way for. Great all around on all levels
Food was delicious. The brisket will blow your mind. Service was pretty friendly and fast. My only complaint is that their coleslaw was absolutely garbage. Other than that, I'd go back over and over again just for the Mac and cheese!
I would give this place a 5 star rating if it had a good selection of vegetable dishes. Otherwise the meat options are phenomenal. The pork back nuggets are delicious,as was the maple ribs. The weaker choices were the Korean bbq ribs and bit heavy on the breading on the spicy chicken with frank's red sauce.
Been here twice. Once for dinner once for brunch. Both experiences were stellar. However, the tenderness of the brisket and flavour was wonderful the first time but, my second experience was subpar as the brisket was dry and not as outstanding.
Some of the best bbq I've had since my Seattle days at Dixie's. Throw in about half dozen or more local craft beers on tap (highly recommend the Hamilton brew). We came for the sunday brunch. Don't shy away. All the same great slabs of savory meat, just plus eggs.
This place can get slammed. They recommend reservations Friday/Saturday night.
A must for BBQ fans in Hamilton. The best brisket I've had outside of Austin. This is going to be a go-to for me.
Whether you eat in or take out. The brisket and brisket Mac and cheese is worth the drive! Thanks for a great lunch.
Best d*mn salad and biscuits I ever had, and I'm not even vegetarian. Generous portions of delicious smoked meat will leave you more than satiated. Highly recommend to any and all meat lovers out there.
A classic take on American bbq. It's a very simple design on the inside with all of the focus on the menu. It's family style ordering where everyone shares a bunch of different meats and side dishes. The fried chicken drumstick is a life changer and I really enjoyed the cornbread and Brussels sprout sides. The menu changes quite often so review their website before you go. It's not in the greatest neighborhood but the city of Hamilton is going through a lot of turnover and this area is up and coming.
Parking is scarce, you either have to find street parking or a paid lot. I am a wheelchair user and I would consider Saltlick wheelchair accessible. There is no automatic door at the entrance/exit. Table heights are sufficient and easy to roll under. The bathrooms aren't huge but I was able to make do. I would give Saltlick a 6/10 for wheelchair accessibility.
Redemption for all the failed Barbicue joints in Hamilton, Saltlick Smokehouse provided a great experience tonight for our Birthday Dinner, Party of Five. The GM, Tristan, waited on us and gave fine service and recommendations on food and drink. The servers, music, and food were all fantastic, and although the price per individual was on the high side of what we tend to spend going out, we did have leftovers to bring home after being more than satisfied by amounts eaten. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to others or come back again myself on occasion for a treat or special event.
Our Order for five people was: 5 Meat Platter consisting of; Smoked Turkey, Southern Fried Drumsticks, Barbicued Pork Back Ribs, Korean Beef Ribs, and for sides; Mac n' Cheese and Champ Potatoes.
the service was amazing ! Very fast and kind, the serve was very talkative and I love that so thank you kindly will be coming back !
Great quality meat and the sides are amazing. The portions were pretty small for the price though. Lunch menu is much better value.
I ordered the 3 portion platter with brisket, Korean rib tips, baked beans and pulled pork mac n cheese. The food is really good, but the portions are small and the price is steep, even for James St. N.
Good: Selection, quality and quantity of meat. Sides are also damn good, if not confusing if you're not familiar with them.
Mediocre: Parking stucks. My server advised me it was probably okay to park in the lot across the way and I got a $40 parking ticket.
Bad: Don't come here with somebody who isn't very adventurous food-wise. You will become fat.
The chicken and brisket is so good and I I don't even like eating bbq/smoked food. Very good place and clean. Look them up on Instagram if you want an idea of what you'd like to eat.
Absolutely awesome, from the friendly and helpful servers, the excellent food, great selection of local craft beer to the incredible value for money, this is a place you have got to try.
One of the best dining experiences in Hamilton, cannot recommend it highly enough.
Food was delicious. Korean beef ribs, pork belly tacos and souther drumsticks... So tasty.
Server was a bit flighty and seemed to be bothered when we asked for water, etc. one of the cooks was so helpful and told us all his favorite dishes which are all the things we ordered👌🏼
Went to Saltlick this week it was a little hot but i heard they are upgrading their air conditioning which will make for a more comfortable experience. I had the Duck Confit, Flatiron Steak, Beef Belly Tacos (which were amazing) Mac and Cheese and Beans probably one of the best dining experiences I have had in a long time service was excellent drinks were delicious and cold the cocktail menu is great and refreshing. Would definetly dine here again place is very busy dont forget to make a reservation in advance.
Six of us descended on Saltlick this past Supercrawl and it was superawesome. Reminded me of Good Luck in Rochester (yes, Rochester--be sure to stumble into GL if you're ever in that cool town).
All delicious sharing plates: hot Nashville fried chicken, flat iron steak with blue cheese risotto, rich mac and cheese, tender soft corn, melt-in-your-mouth brisket, and more.
Everything was delicious. Great atmosphere and vibe. Cool dining room. Great location.
Service was polite and generally competent. We did wait a few hours for our first round of drinks, though. Oh, and they took my reservation over the phone but failed to write it down (a la Seinfeld). A frown and a little cajoling and they made everything right. Will definitely return with another largeish party.
We had a brunch family platter... DAMN that was good! That brisket 👌👌So much food too, had to take the ret home. Good job guys, might be number 2 bbq join on my top favorite list.
Loved everything. The waiting staff were attentive, the food offer surprises after surprises, each one more delicious that the other. Plentiful servings. And the cook was singing the while time - it was very enjoyable !
Great Food, Service was ok, & atmosphere was excellent for sitting down with a big group and catching up.
Server let us stay past close while they cleaned up. Which was excellent.
Only reason it is 4 stars not 5 was it was a little bit pricy.
Everything we tried was deliscious!! Amazing BBQ joint, definitely coming back!!
BBQ was ok- brisket was fatty, but doused in flavour. Ribs had good flavour but cooked quickly, hard to get off the bone. Good selection of crafty beer. Pricey for what you get. Smokey room.
Fantastic experience! We did not have a reservation and they were able to give us a table! The food was amazing and the side were great! We will be back for sure!
Such a great place for some brunch! I intend to come back for the dinner as well. The meat was delicious! Family friendly for weekend brunches. Also, coffee or tea is included! Absolutely love.
The food here is always excellent. If they have brisket on the menu definitely try that. For dinner they serve everything family style, and for lunch they make their meat selections into sandwiches. You can't go wrong either way.
Delicious BBQ, good service and environment
Listen. Do you hear it???? That's right everyone the Meat Sweats are comin. This place is a meat lovers dream and a vegans worst nightmare come true. Enjoy Toronto style food and ambience but without the 20 dollar parking fee. Nestled right in the up coming James Street North area. The Meat selection is second to none, our waitress was fantastic and even offered my friend and I to sample some beers before we settled on a pint. Make sure you get resetvations because the place is always packed.
Food was delicious as always, nice Valentine's date.
Great food, great service but the poor ventilation gave my husband a headache and made me feel nauseous within an hour of sitting down. The place was filled with smoke and that fried food stench. Not a great place for kids or date night. I won’t go back. They need to fix this issue.
While the place looks nice, the food wasn't that great and some was even under cooked. The idea to split it between members at the table is nice....if you bring enough for people to have more than a tiny piece each just because we are a larger group. Watching smaller groups get more than enough for them and barely enough for us was upsetting. Same with the sides, one small portion each. For a group of ten who were there almost three hours, that's terrible. We had to try to get the two waitresses attention many times to get a water refill which barely came as we were about to leave. The Mac and cheese and the cornbread were delicious even for their lack. It isn't something I'd rush out to do any time soon again.
Shane and his staff at Salt Lick ran an amazing evening of Food( chicken, pork, cauliflower and much more ) and drink at my sons wedding last weekend.
I would highly recommend them for any event. Thank you for helping making it a memorable time.
Fantastic food. Vegans should probably stay away. Try the brisket, just the best. Family style menu is a nice touch. Excellent.
I love the Mac and cheese, the bahn mi (Vietnamese style sub sandwiches) and the pulled pork. Good flavours, communal menu not visible to all tables. Great addition to the street. As the group gets larger so do the portions.
Great food! I will definitely be ordering from here again!
I have this place 3 🌟 only because the service was amazing. Good job Melissa. Other than that 2 🌟 would suffice. The simple fact that you cannot just buy an individual portion for yourself I something I didn't like. $100 for my wife and I was rediculous considering the amount of food that we got..which wasn't alot. Taste of food was average.
Ribs are better than Ribfest. Great service. Definitely coming back.
If you're craving that barbeque this is the best I've had in Hamilton. Ribs, belly nuggets, pulled pork, cauliflower and greens were all delicious. Place needs some blinds though, sun was blinding in the evening.
Great food and flavours. Portion sizes were quite large. I found that there was a lot of fat in my brisket and would have preferred that to be cut out before putting the meat in the sandwich.
The food is so delicious and the service is extremely friendly and helpful! Will definitely make my way back for a brisket sandwich.
Menu was a little hard to see from my seat, but the food was good and the "vibe" in there was really interesting. Would definitely recommend to anyone who really loves meat! Server was nice and helpful but seemed a little overwhelmed.
Superb food. However the price range for dinner is rather high as it's 29 per person (as of writing review), makes it difficult to recommend. If the price doesn't bother you, it's definitely worth a visit
Food is just delicious, good sized portions. If you are ever craving meat this is the place to go. Their sides are just as good. Mac and cheese is awesome. Great places for groups and sharing.
The portions are perfect for each person and the quality of the food is what you would expect from a high quality southern smoke house. It's not overly pricey, and the atmosphere is rustic and classy.
They do a good job with the smoked meats. Good beer selection. The only downsides are the atmosphere (smells like the kitchen, not enough ventilation) and the high prices. If you really like smoked meats, you'll like this place.
Was here for brunch / lunch.
Had the pork belly sandwich. It was good. Also the skillet brunch. Very tasty. Nice selection of craft beer. Didn't have the smoked meat, maybe next time
A real culinary treat. I would give it 5-stars, but I found the prices to be a little bit too much given the size of the side-dishes. I think a little bit more side-dish (ie, mac&cheese or coleslaw) would go a long way. Other than that, the food is incredible, and it smells great even just passing by.
The roast pork lunch special on Friday was outstanding!! All you can eat from a whole roasted pig, mac and cheese, slaw and buns. Best lunch in town at $15!!!
I will rate Salt lick 5 stars because their ceasar is the best I've ever had. I will go there just for that. I had the Brisket Rueben which was delicious but the meat was too fatty and very hard to chew I will go back and try more.!
A Hamilton's gem. The staff is friendly. The food taste is excellent. Good variety of alternatives to choose from. The only downside is that it can be expensive. However, it is worth the price.
Great take on bbq, very tasty, great portions, love this place
Delicious BBQ joint. The pork belly nuggets are amazing, a must try. The rest of the menu is similarly delicious! Definitely not a place to go if you're a vegetarian.
Nice unique place. Great food options. Everything ordered tasted good. Staff will accommodate if possible if no reservation is made, but making reservations is recommended.
One the best places I've ever ate at.YOU GOTTA EAT HERE. Not only was the food amazing the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The owner was friendly and made sure we were happy and having a good time. Amazing food even better time.
I've had delivery from Saltlick a few times and then I stopped. The food was always dry and over seasoned. Prices were not great either. There's better places in town for your money.
Saltlick has AMAZING BBQ! And the vibes are so chill. The music and waitresses were the friendliest. Brunch can get busy; when we went we got lucky because we got there early.
I could have been happy with any of the amazing choices for both the meats and sides. The brisket was juicy and the mac and cheese creamy and delicious. Will definitely go back.
Very good home style food! I enjoy the idea of portioning the food out per table. The beef brisket was delicious, as so was the mac and cheese.
My girlfriend & i went there for a late Sunday lunch .. nice place, only negative was the crashing sound of the awning hitting the front window.. luckily, they got that semi fixed .. i had the brisket sandwich w/ slaw ... she had jefk chicken eggs benny' ... they also threw in some corn muffins ... Brisket sandwich was pretty good .. slightly more fatty than desired ... very tasty though,... i didnt like the slaw ... my girlfriend said "she tasted malt vinegar in it"...i couldnt eat it ... She loved her eggs benny' ... corn muffins were good' even though im not fond of hot peppers in them.. prefer sweeter' with butter or honey butter ... the beers were good' even though i didnt recognize any of the craft selections or what they were like ... the one recommended was very good. .. i had a pint & a 1/2 pint ... Price was fair ... We agreed' ..We'd return
Food is always good, but service was lacking the last visit. Arrived at 11:15am (15 minutes after posted opening) to be told "we aren't really open, but you may as well sit I guess". We spent the rest of the time listening to the staff flip through their music playlist.
The only reason I didnt give it a five, their menu is very basic with no apps or dessert. So the cheapest thing is a full meal at $31...but otherwise excellent and tasty...
Had the jerk chicken tacos and brisket mac which were excellent. Came by my lonesome and even though they were super busy and serve family style they accommodated my single appetite with great customer service. Great vibe too.
Absolutely amazing! The food is delicious! The staff is wonderful. The prices are a tad high but the quality of food makes it worth it. Highly recommend, it’s a experience you need to try!
Brisket was amazing! Service was a little slow but it was worth the wait. Loved the atmosphere. Also the biscuits were awesome! Can't wait to go back.
Now that I’ve had pork melt in my mouth I feel like life has gotten remarkably better. NOTE: ordering five meats and two side dishes split between two humans of average height and weight may temporarily increase the cost of your water bill. SECOND NOTE: I suggest the mac n’ cheese.
Words cannot explain how wonderful Will, Lisa, and Paul were for our first time experience . Their ability to romance the menu to us was absolutely phenomenal. THE FLAT IRON WAS MIND BOGGLING AND THEY ALL DESERVE A RAISE ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! Truly excellent food! And, our waitstaff was fantastic! My friends and I will definitely be back!
You have to step inside and try this! Just honest to goodness food here! Loved it!
Had the BBQ pork and the ribs. Was so dry and tough. Hard to chew and swallow. The ribs looked and tasted burnt. Was not worth 30 dollars per person.
Best place to eat Handsdown.
The food melted in my mouth.
Chef and service were unbelievable. Thanks for an amazing dinner experience. Wow.
Very very good quality. I did not give it five stars as I thought the portions were a little small and the prices a little high. but like I said I have never had a bad bite here.
The food and service there is great!!! I would definitely go there again.
The food was all great. Very tasty and good size portions. Delivery was 30 mins late though.
Waiter was GREAT! LARGE PORTIONS. atmosphere and ambiance was comfortable along with eclectic music.. wonderful experience, would definitely go back...
This place was amazing booked one week in advance lived up to its name!
Fantastic food. True smoked foods. You can actually taste the smoked flavor. Great beer selection. It's small but that's ok it just adds more to the atmosphere.
Pricy, but good food. We've been a few times. Most meats are great, and sides are always bang on. Service is pleasant and attentive.
Only complaint is they were out of ribs when we arrived :( but the choices we had were incredible! Really enjoyed the food and great service. I wish there was more space so we weren't jammed between a big group and a wall but that's just the nature of smaller restaurants. We'd def go back and suggest this place to friends!!
If you go for breakfast/lunch this place is amazing and very delicious! However, their dinner prices are expensive, last time I went with a group of 4 it was group dining and each individual had to pay. $$$$
Great food, bit on the pricey side but well seasoned and good portions. Really enjoyed the pork belly tacos - great combo of flavours.
I wasn't sure about this place at first (name kinda weird) but I guess you can't just a book by its cover. Went there for lunch and and the beef brisket sandwich with mac and cheese side. Nice flavour. Not fatty at all.
Went for a Saturday lunch. Restaurant was quiet around 3 pm. Great friendly service, delicious mac and cheese and very tasty sandwich. Will be back for sure!
Excellent brisket sandwich and hand cut fresh fries. Coleslaw was good too. You should go.
Fantastic food and service. The BBQ is delicious, the atmosphere and portions are great! Great place for a double date or date night.
Great portion size and solid BBQ.
Great meat place 😋☺️
Good patio out front
Great lunch and brunch (only on sundays) options. A little expensive, but great quality and quantity for the price. Never had dinner there.
Amazing food!! The Mac n cheese, the brisket and the friend chicken are particularly delicious. The staff is amazing too. So friendly!!!
Fantastic service, great food, the hand made chives biscuits are absolutely to die for!
Went here with a group of 6. Food was just incredible. Brisket is to die for and the smoked duck was breathtaking. Will absolutely return.
This has been one of my favorite BBQ places for a while. If you enjoy spicy food, ask to try the house made ghost pepper sauce. The flavor is incredible.
Visited today and LOVED it!! Delicious food and portions! Fantastic service from super friendly and approachable staff. I recommend anyone to check it out! We will 100% be going back 😁
Great tasting BBQ meats and sides!! Small restaurant so you may need to reserve in advance. Meat lovers will enjoy.
Pretty excellent food and beer taps. The beef and pork surpasses the chicken, but you probably won't be disappointed. Service can be hit or miss.

Great BBQ! We we're lucky enough to get seated at the bar during a busy day and enjoy the singing chef. Better keep your day job, lol
Awesome place. Had the brisket and beef ribs where wicked. Owner showed me my new favorite cocktail. Kw cider with a splash of tequila
Great tasting BBQ and excellent customer service...A little pricey but you get what you pay for.
An intimate place for lunch or dinner. The menu was a bit confusing and needed explanation. I had the pork belly sandwich which was very tasty. The side beans didn't seem like much we put into them.
I had the beef brisket sandwich and also the jerk chicken with there in house bake pinto beans and mac and cheese with dice brisket took some for leftovers nice server she told me about the features change daily and how everything is made in house awesome food and menu good selection.👍
Really good food, friendly staff
Great food and amazing service.
Our server Robyn was very attentive and helpful in explaining menu.
Will definitely come back again
Don't let the size fool you.... This place is BIG on service and outstanding flavour. A perfect smoke on the wings. Crunchy and soft jalapeno cornbread. MMMmmm.
Best brisket I have ever eaten. They definitely know how to bbq!! Service was good also.
Nice BBQ place. Not too big. Brisket was very good. Service was good. Friendly staff. Street parking. Would d go back.
Another great Hamilton eatery. Decent portions. Very good service. Need to go back and try some more meat!
Fantastic little gem, awesome food with great service, not cheap but well worth it.
This is a legit smokehouse. Small fire for a temporary evacuation. The staff was very good about it and comped the meal. 4 stars for the great food -1 for the evacuation.
Overpriced. Too much fat on the brisket, and make sure to ask for BBQ sauce on the side when you order because its drenched. The slaw could be better
I love this place. It's my go-to for authentic BBQ. Everytime I go the service has been very warm, genuine and welcoming.
One of the best beef briskets we've ever had. Chicken wings, Mac & Cheese and the beans were great too
Order the brisket mac and cheese if you know what's good for you!
Friendly, great portions, great food, great drinks! What more could you ask for?
If you love meat, this is the place to visit. Great flavors and portions. Customer service was great!
Outstanding authentic southern comfort. Brisket on point and some surprisingly incredible jerk chicken. Highly recommended James Street eats!
Delicious food and huge portions. Especially loved the brisket and the Mac & Cheese. Great service also.
The brisket was not as juicy and tendor as expected and the ribs no where near fall of the bone, the man and cheese was delicious and so were the beans
Great smoked dinners at great prices...reopening soon
Delicious meats. Be warned though the pork belly is rich tasting and gave me a bit of a stomach ache. Likely just meat sweats. 🙂
We Went for their brisket sandwich and mac and cheese. Very yummy!!
Went here for the first time today. Food was really good, nice little spot. Will come back. Try the Pork Belly.
This place is incredible. Best BBQ I've ever had, including many places in the Southern US.
Great food and wonderful service. Make sure you get the Mac & Cheese & ribs. ☺
Just did the chef mash up. Amazing. What a great variety of if food and an incredible price for a great meal with parings.
Had an amazing brunch.. The food did take longer than expected.. But this isn't McDonalds.. Quality meat prepared with care..great atmosphere.., will be back..
Amazing food. Expensive, but if you're having a night out and are willing to spend 80$, 2 can eat and still have tonnes of food to take home.
Great place if you only want to eat meat. It was too smokey in the restaurant and I found it was overpriced. Not worth going a second time.
Amazing family style food! You honestly can't pick anything wrong here, unless you're allergic
I had previously posted a negative review. I am changing it to 5 stars again. Service issues are resolved and the food is top notch. :)
Great food, nice atmosphere, and good service. Meals aren't cheap, but it's pretty reasonable amount of food for the cost.
The food is the kind where you want to close your eyes so you can enjoy it more. The best Brussel sprouts ever.
The prices have gone up and although the food is great it's not 30 bucks a person grade they don't even give you toothpicks but the barbecue sauce is to die for
If you enjoy BBQ it is a must! We love the family style service. The staff was very friendly as well!
The fried drumsticks and so well seasoned and perfectly fried. Mac & cheese is super creamy.
Amazing and friendly staff. I loved especially liked pork belly tacos, next time i would surely order 2 sets of that.
Would definitely recommend trying out this place. Great ambience, delicious food, fantastic service. Keep up the good work.
A little pricey for what you get and the fries and mac and cheese were cold. Meat was fine
The food is delicious! Great portions, family style and great prices! Definitely coming back.
Everything was very good. You need to be in a mood for meat, but worth a try. Make sure to make a reservation!
Went here for dinner and sat on the patio. The service was good. The food was nothing special and seemed a little over priced.
Sooooo goooood! My favourite tonight was the pork belly nuggets. The serving staff and cooks were very nice as well.
Great bbq
Not cheap, but better BBQ than you'll find most places in Canada. Tasty, interesting specials, lovely service.
Do you love meat? Do you love beer? Do you love eating until you can't feel your heart beating? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you love Salt lick Smokehouse!
I went their for brunch and had the brisket eggs benedict.
Incredible!
Can't wait to go back for dinner
Went there last night hungry couldn't get in the place was too busy but it sure smelled good I'll go back another time. You know a place is good when you can't get in.
Food and service are fantastic. Menu is simple and food is served family style for dinner. This is a casual trendy place
A phenomenal dining experience. Absolutely amazing staff and stellar food. A must try for all omnivores.
BEST BBQ ever. Great service. Delish food.
Deepfried pork belly was one of the best dishes iv had in over a year.
Vegans will be highly disappointed.
Amazing barbecue!!!! I especially love the brisket and the pork belly poppers! Service is great too
Amazing smokehouse. The meats were tender and well seasoned. Staff was helpful and attentive.
Been to salt lick a couple times; both of which were fantastic. The chicken and waffles on their breakfast menu can't be beat !!
Excellent fried chicken drumsticks, pulled pork and
Mac and Cheese. The brisket needed more sauce.
Unbelievable selection and quality of meats, excellent craft beer options, great atmosphere. About as close to perfection as it gets
Food was amazing ! Paul the butcher is a master in the kitchen. Thanks again can't wait to come back
Tasty southern barbecue style, great for meat lovers, or someone who's on a ketogenic diet.
Had the all you can eat whole hog experience and it was absolutely delicious! The mac and cheese was absolutely off the chains
So... atmosphere is top notch, food is incredible. Thanks for feeding us, we'll be back soon .
One of our favourite restaurants. The brisket is killer and everything else is really good too!
Excellent service! Atmosphere could have been a little cozier (e.g. booths). Food was good
Mmmmm MEAT!!!
Delicious food excellent service.
Loved the church pews and tables.
Had an amazing lunch going back for dinner.
Quick lunch Service. Drumsticks are huge. Smoked pork sandwich was good. Would go again
Nothing but good things coming out of that kitchen... Jerk chicken might be too spicy for some but was perfect to me!
Great food, great service. Honest and respectable staff. Keep up the great work.
Unique restaurant with a great selection of BBQ meats and sides. No salads here, people!
Great comfort food at very fair prices. Great menu and delicious meals in large portions.
I've been several times and am always happy with the food and the service. I recommend everything on the menu!
Great food but a little pricey for what you get.
Not super flavourful. Quite disappointing but the meat was cooked well...the flavour just wasnt there
Great but a bit understaffed. It's priced like a place where you should have attentive service but it doesn't seem to be providing it, so only go if you don't need to impress anyone.
The best smokehouse in #HamOnt! Recommended to everybody!
Best Brisket in the City! Good selection of Beer and Booze. One of my favourite spots!
Amazing food. Amazing Service from Alison last week! We will definitely be coming back!
Good prices and great flavours. Wings were a favourite and definitely will be getting them again.
Food, service, atmosphere were all great. A little on the pricey side though.
Really love the food here. Smoked really well and meat is tender.
It was ok. Get the Nashville hot chicken. Pork dishes were not great
Amazing service from our waiter and the food was AMAZING!
Excellent family style restaurant. Unique local beer on tap. Would recommend reservation
So good! I had the jerk chicken tacos and my brother had the brisket sandwich. Amazing!!!
This place is actually awesome. Food is great and the staff are super friendly. Highly recommend this place.
Good meat selection and pretty good quality, but there are better places to go for the price.
Absolutely amazing food. We were all stuffed and had plenty of leftovers too.
A true Smokehouse!! No gas assist! Amazing food, friendly staff. Great place. Love it!
Amazing place to eat. Brisket was amazing. service was above and beyond. Highly reccomended
Delicious food quick service even being packed on a Saturday night. Definitely will be coming back
