Friendly service & good food.
We stopped here for lunch, my husband had the schnitzel dinner and I had the schnitzel sandwich.
Not the best schnitzel we’ve ever eaten but it was good.
We should have had the pork hock because apparently that’s their specialty.
Smoked pork hock all the way! Go go go! You never go wrong! One portion is good for 2 people if you are not too hungry.
They said it is the best place for you to try smoked pork hock. And it is. First time try and immediately fall in love with it. See how large it is. And the taste is fantastic. So soft and easy to peel from the bone. Don’t miss this restaurant if you are nearby. They have 160 years of local history.
Never be disappointed by their famous smoked pork hock which was soft and juice. We also ordered sausage on a bun, the fries were tasty. Place was clean and the waitress was very nice.
The German roast is very very delicious.
Love it
Sat outside on the patio. Staff very attentive. A bit disappointed in the food. The burger was previously frozen by the taste but edible. The schnitzel was very thin and seemed like it was frozen and processed before cooking. Did not enjoy at all. Coleslaw was swimming in mayonnaise dressing. We were hoping for home made food unless we are totally wrong. Saw someone with the pork hock dinner and that looked freshly made.
Wonderful hidden gem in this small town(Heidelberg) a few km from st. Jacob's. Great German fare. Awesome pork hock. A must goto restaurant if this is your kind of food.
A restaurant that every time we visited, we will never get disappointed. Again we ordered a pork hog and a roasted beef for lunch. The quality is always consistent. The pork hog is nicely cooked that the skin and the meat are soft.
The waitresses are polite and diligent. Social distance is strictly observed.
Looking forward to next visit.
I had dinner for several times here
at the begining, the food was great
but during recent years, it is worse and worse, don't know why
chef changed???
beer keeps the same great taste
Excellent food and really friendly service. Indoor dining was well spaced out and nice cooled interior which was perfect on a hot day. The pork hock is a must-try! Absolutely a great experience.
Good food, good service and friendly staffs! The pork hock is good as usual. Definitely will come back!
Famous pork hock in town. The meat are soft and juice. Portion are big with a decent price.
Great yummy pork hock dinner, onion rings and very friendly service, will come back for sure, worth the long drive and made our day!!!
This was the final destination for us, Mercedes-Benz Club Canada first cruise this year. The terrace was great to accommodate us, around 40 cars, vintages and new, the cars were parked on the parking lot of the venue. Good food and drinks and the people who were serving us, very fast and friendly. Highly recommended it.
Came here all the way from Vancouver BC. So satisfied! Hands down best pork hock In Ontario.
Great family atmosphere....ribs are always on point. Delicous as tender inside and nice dry rub type outside. Don't often mention coleslaw but it was a great side along w mashed n peas. Not cheap but what good food is these days. Lots of other cool german based food like pork hock n schnitzel.
The German style food is amazing, the roast beef was great, the smoked pork hock is a specialty that people come all over to try. The draft beer harkens to Octoberfest celebration. Must eat here
Not to bad. Food was good but not exceptional. Seemed overpriced. Building needs updating inside & out. Otherwise would probably go again, if needs be
super big portion for a very reasonable price. Very flavorful. long road trip, but was worth it.
Best chicken wings. Not sure on the rest of the menu but the wings are amazing. Extremely friendly staff as well!
The food and service was good. We will go back when we're in the area.
If looking for a nice roasted pork hock, don't look anywhere else. You are in the right place 👍 100% recommended
Totally worthy to drive from GTA for it. It was tender and juicy.
We ordered the sausage too, but it was a little pricy when comparing to the signature dish.
Suggest to visit St Jacob market in a row.
Protocols in place. Staff attentive to start.
Prices pretty high. I was surprised that no salads were on the menu considering it is Summer.
Went for dinner today. Had hock, ribs and butter tart. Perfectly done. Between they have a large patio with more than enough seating.
A fun old German tavern. We had the pork hock and schnitzel. Delicious!!
Not like it was 20 years ago, but still pretty good...
It was great just like the last time we were there in 2017
Omg so much food. Homemade dessert. Must try the smoked ham hocks.
Food was good, but if you’re sitting outside beware of the flies.
The hysterical significance is tangible in this place. The experience complained about the great food and staff even after we walked in late on a weeknight.
Pork hock a must-try. Delicious. Friendly service.
Beer good, food so so. Schnitzel looks like it NOT made in restaurant and a bit dry Pig tail was fatty.
Love this place. This is one of the first places my wife took me in 2001 when we first started dating.
If you love good german style ribs, huge pork hocks, pig tails, schnitzel and fried chicken with all the sides you will love this place..we go at least once a month. It's too bad they dont make their own brew anymore, this was an original micro brewery long before their current popularity..
Great food good customer service.
I see a lot of people come to this place for Pork Honk! Indeed it tastes delicious. It is a little bit heavier in taste, still taste great!
I also ordered Schnitzel dinner. It is good too. Thin and crusty. The apple source that goes with sauerkraut is great. It would even be better if it goes with side buns. Make it like a Schnitzel burger!
Beer wise does not have a lot of selection on tap, but hey, this is a place for motel to hang out, so it is good enough for getaways.
I only went for the restaurant, not staying here. Maybe the next time for a real getaway after covid19.
It was well organized and covid prepared. The food was tasty
Came all the way from Toronto and I was not disappointed.
Great food and reasonably priced!
Great German food, very friendly staff members, nice view, and full of history.
Really good traditional German fare. Schnitzel is excellent and very friendly staff.
Good Food. Pig tails yum
The staff are very good, good value for the money
Very friendly staff and pork hock was amazing
I would always bring friends and families to this nice, family-style restaurant when they're in town. The smoked pork hogs they serve here are juicy and tender without being too oily at the same time. It is delicious in its own style, a bit different from the fried pork hogs I used to have in Germany.
Highly recommend whenever you're visiting Waterloo.
I liked this place. Visited with my family and most of them had the famous smoked hock here. I had the schnitzel dinner. The food was pretty good. Would visit again in the future when in the area.
Great food, great service, cant wit to see inside
Special type of food but a little heavy
Love the food. Especially pork hock
Great little find. Tried the hocks. Delicious. Great service and staff and quick with the food. They have a gluten free menu as well.
It's an old tavern with some deep fried greash food, which that day we were perfectly fine with, we were the only one seated in the room near a big screen watching a hockey replay, the drinks were good, for was decent gilled cheese and summer sausage sandwiches, deep fried mushrooms ect. Waitresses were pleasant prices were cheap enough service was quick
This place is more than a touch of the original Waterloo. The atmosphere is great. The food is excellent and it's well worth a visit
Fantastic! Food isn't expensive, and tastes great! Gotta try the smoked pork hock, it's fall-apart and wonderfully flavourful. Try the onion rings too! Environment is homey and cozy, and staff are excellent. Go on a weekday if possible, it's relatively busy on weekends
Sort of Down-to-Earth restaurant in a small town backed onto farm fields. There is a unmistakeably strong German flavour. The serving sizes, e.g. Pork hocks, ribs, sausages, etc. were very generous. Perhaps more importantly, the taste was quite good too. The aroma arrived before the plate was delivered to our table. At the first bite when digging in, pretty much every taste bud got a good charge of pleasant and satisfactory stimuli, and it last throughout the meal, amazing.
Succulent smoked pork hock and pigtails. Refreshing local beer. Friendly staffs. The place has become a tourist attraction. Better make reservation to shorten waiting time; also, I believe, help the staffs to better predict the quantity of food to prepare. We wanted to take home some smoked pork hocks, but they have almost run out and needed to keep whatever still available to eat-in customers.
Good home cooked food. Really fast service and the staff is super friendly. Love coming here.
We have been going to the Heidelberg Tavern for many years now. Nothing much has changed there and that is part of the attraction. We had the ribs and pig tails. The ribs were plenty but could use some spicing such as BBQ sauce, we found them rather bland and the meat a bit tough. The pig tails were of good size but also could use some more flavouring. Fries are awesome so is the sauerkraut. Good beer selection. Service is quite quick and the staff is friendly.
The taste has gone down to much comparing to my university days. And they had stopped offering the home brew beer.
Blessed place. Been here many times. Schnitzel and ham hocks are always a treat.
Employees are always really welcoming and nice!
Great dining experience.
Pork hocks.
Nice menu
Friendly staff
Good old fashioned German inspired food. Try the pork hocks , absolutely amazing or try Thursday wing night. You will not be disappointed. As far as ambiance, it's open and friendly. The establishment has been in the region since 1860 so they are doing something right.
I really do enjoy a great meal hear
They know how to sauce things up!
First, I love places like these. Authentic place with zero pretence, heavily trafficked by locals, home-cooked everything.... REAL mashed potatoes.
Back room tavern part has the feel of an extended kitchen blended with a small-town diner. Beer is crisp, cold, and clean. You can always tell a place that keeps good clean beer lines. Working man selection, served properly. Wish I lived closer!
Relaxed. Good food. Good service. Would have liked more choice for beers on tap.
Price was a little but good portions. The pork hocks are incredibly filling, so bring a friend if you're planning on ordering pork hocks. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
Great place to have a meal while visiting St. Jacobs township. Don't forget to try their Smoked Pork Hock dinner.
Found that this place was a little over rated. The food is ok. The pork hock was very tender and was pretty good. Not too salty. The ribs were horrible. Lacked flavor and was dry. The schnitzel was pretty thin but was tender. The pig tail was ok.. pretty gelatinous. If you stop by, the pork hock was ok. The others were so so IMO.
The pork knuckle and pig tail here are excellent. The sausages are good too. The menu could use some more vegetable side dishes.
I recommend the patter. It's enough to feed a family of four, especially if you can get some good veggies elsewhere to go with your meal.
The service is tolerable, but the food more than makes up for it.
The restaurant could definitely use a reno, but that's not what people come here for, and it might actually take away from the charm.
Get a reservation if possible. Seats are hard to come by here.
Service was quite good. Chicken and schnitzel was a bit over cooked or in oil too hot. Fries were very good. Wait staff were very good. I'll come back forsure.
We tried the two pork hock for 2 combo and veal, both were delicious. The food was prepared fast and the waitresses were nice and helpful. Only thing to note is you'll need to call them to reserve a seat in advance. Otherwise you'll have to wait for a good time to be seated.
Great place to dine in with family. I came here with my girlfriend and my mother in law. Came to do shopping in the Jacob's Farm market and stopped by at this restaurant. Food is great, fast service, friendly staffs.
Great German style food. Price is really reasonable. Lovely family owned business.
Staff was awesome and super friendly. The hot hamburger sandwich was better than my Mom use to make. Tyvm staff :)
Awsome. Great place to eat
Food is Great. And the staff is awesome.
I have not only worked at this location in that late 1980's, I still enjoy going and eating there. The staff is amazing and the food is delicious. I love when they have live music and the community atmosphere. Keep up the good work guys!
This place is recommended by lots of my friends. It is a must go restaurant when I go to Waterloo. The Restaurant is sell is pretty unique. very family-oriented. Looks busy all the time. the servers are very friendly and give recommendation on their special dishes. We order the assorted Special which has almost everything on, and beer. it was quite an experience trying the pig leg, the sausage, but the pig tail kind of make me lose to appetize. there is wifi, also an entertaining room with pool table.
Even though we were a really big group, they were able to accommodate us. The service was quick and friendly. The atmosphere and setting is very casual and time appropriate. The food we ordered (pork platter) was 6.5/10. The pork was flavourful and cooked well. The sides were not 2 servings in my opinion, but you can tell they were made in house and fresh. Overall a nice place to have a meal if you are in the area.
I went there many times and taste is consistently good.
Good place
Don't attempt to finish a pork hock on your own unless you are really hungry! Pork is tender and smoky. Price is very reasonable. Friendly staff.
Excellent food and nice atmosphere. I was invited by my Canadians friends and I wasn't disappointed. Good service and friendly staff. Love it.
Very good pork hock and fires. Been here several times and their pork hock is always the to pick. Portion is a bit too large for a single person though, probably fit for 2 persons. This time we tried their pumpkin pie and it's rightfully done with a home style taste. Price is very decent for such a portion being served!
Only thing I want to point out is the service was little lackluster, we were only tasted once when we ordered, and thereafter waitresses are too busy to help us, not even topping up water. Perhaps it's because it was a long weekend Saturday and not enough people to help out.
We went late in the afternoon for lunch, it was our first time there. We were greeted right away, we ordered take out and service was friendly and fast. Really surprised the restaurant was still full at that time(2pm). Portions we good in size. Would definitely go back for a sit in dine.
Great service, food is little heavy for myself with little too much oils. I'm not sure if German food is making this way. But overall, it is a great place to visit for something different. Price is very reasonable. We did try pigtails rib combo 2.5/5. Smoke pockhock 4/5 and large country sausage 4/5.
Basic room, clean and affordable. It met my expectations.
2nd time there and didnt disappoint 😉 bought 3 German family members there. Most had Pork Hocks or pigs tails but servings are a good portion size. Speedy service. Food hot and you got to have a German beer🍺
It's really hard to say if you'll like this place or not; some people absolutely love it, and others detest it. It's an old style building with old style food service, though I heard they do have Chinese menus now.
Food is excellent and in huge portion. Water tastes a bit funny but it doesn’t matter if you order the tasty dark beer.
This place is awesome! Step back a little in time. Great, friendly service. Large portions of great bar food. Played some shuffleboard for entertainment.
Excellent , taste even better than 10+ years ago
We tried smoked hock, pig tail and ribs, with some sides. Everything is fantastic, huge portion and very reasonable price. Service is courteous. This place is full of tourists.
