Ottawa Humane Society's Reviews and comments
The facility is excellent. The staff are likewise just top notch. This is certainly one of my favorite places... compassionate and just plain good. Highly recommend you get your next pet here, they take great care of the animals, you really couldn't ask for better... I'm truly impressed and delighted to have met these people and have adopted a pet from them. Stellar!
We’re fortunate to have services like the Ottawa Humane Society. Unwanted pets and rescue animals etc need out help sometimes. It’s understandable why people can’t afford to keep their pets anymore. There could be many reasons why. Bringing them to the humane society is the best step if there aren’t any other options. We needed to sadly let go of a couple of rescue cats because it wasn’t feasible. The society was helpful and courteous and took them in. I’m sure they will find a good home. Thank you. 👍☺️
Very clean, lots of space for animals, and friendly and helpful employees. Cat adoption went smoothly.
Very friendly and understanding. Very clean environment. I'm impressed on how they handle my cat ...
Amazing, ever-caring & helpful staff! Wonderful & well-kept facility for each animal in their care. We found our beautiful fur baby there & our Gimli is a keeper!🐶😍
Friendly Staff and smooth adoption process! Thanks for everything you do!
You can view as many future friends/ family members, we love it
Staff were friendly very knowledgable about the animals in their care
We were forced to make a very hard decision regarding our 14 year old black retriever. He had serious health issues and had to think of him and not ourselves. The help we received from the SPCA was very comforting and compassionate. They were professional and helped us with the tough action of ‘handing over his leash’. We thank you for your kindness and are now at peace with ourselves.
I had to put my 18yr old pitty to sleep (Prince) my sweet baby is with my mom in heaven the ottawa humane was very nice and kind to him, gente loving this was one of the hardest times in life I love you Prince and miss you
I’m confused. I keep hearing about the need for foster homes, yet when I visit the Ottawa Humane Society I see 3 dogs. In a city of 1.3 million people, there are only three dogs that need adopting? I guess fundraising will be easy this year! 🤔
The staff and volunteers give their time and love everyday Plus Plus.... animal abusers are lucky I'm not the one in charge of sentences....
So I try to give dog toys and as of this year dog winter jackets Plus Direct financial support.
Nothing but FIVE STARS LOVE HERE😀
Totally respect and admiration for All staff and volunteers here.
Some sad aniamal wait for there for ever home lovely people very helpful sandra
I love the kittens and cats
They always need help
Super clean, lovely staff, lovely animals ...please adapt the furry babies if you can.
Really beautiful place, very large. Would love to see more of the space used for animals in need. When we went there wasnt many, a lot of birds. I understand there is a lot more happening behind the scenes though. Thanks guys for being so caring for the animals.
Would like to suggest as I noticed someone cleaning the small animals in the front which was super cool area maybe to try and litter train the rabbits and guinea pigs. Give them a few day trial with a litter pan and put their food in it or beside it (like suppppper close) as rabbits poop where they eat constantly. You guys will save a lot shavings ...like a lot. A lot of adopters like to have that additional info. Very tidy place. Cute store with all your needs. Love the cool cat tree and rooms.
Has great dog training classes.
My cat was taken care of very well and he received all shots he needed. I called everyday and they told me he was fine until I could pick him up. Professional staff I dealt with and they were informative and friendly.
Great animal care, very friendly and helpful. Glad this place exists.
Great place, when my cat had to be put down, they were very helpful and very caring
These guys are amazing. I took in a stray today and I love how quick and easy the process was and how well the place was set and staffed.
I was given a reference number to check up on the cat I took which I found helpful and sweet.
good experience. you gotta see different animals waiting to get adopted.
I asked for the recruitment vacancies and they replied happily and told to check website for it. the outer space of the building was clean and guidance by them is also good.
Very clean highly organized and very caring.
I have had all 3 of my rescue kittens fixed and microchipped at the mobile clinic and it has always been a pleasant experience. They are polite and very professional. All 3 procedures went well and never had any complications. 5 Stars!!
Good good..very educational. Loved it
Got our Luna from them 6 months old with bad manners but every day she is improving and she is apart of our family and enriches our life as a family thankfully they got her and not a kill shelter they are professional and check in on how Luna is doing and offered us support but we haven't needed it.
Thank you so much for our awesome cat.
Very helpful when we were looking for a small animal to adopt
The building is really nice, all animals seem to have good spaces to roam. We got a lovely little kitty from here and we were able to pet her and get to know her quite well before deciding to adopt her.
Great experience and found a best friend at the same time!
Very respectfully, super understanding and patience when dealing with us. I had to put my pet rat down and I was super emotionally. I'm glad I had my bf with me, I was such a mess. My poor girl was so sick from a tumor and a stroke 😭😭😭 I do appreciate all the patience and care from the staff.
Great service! Just recently taken my cat to their mobile clinic and they did a great job. My cat was scared going in but once in the arms of a nice vet, she settled right down. They are always kind to animals and anyone who comes in.
Always kind, courteous, respectful and knowledgeable staff. My most recent visit was not one I would have chosen to make and there were a couple times staff could have been impatient with us and they were everything but. Will likely be on my way there soon enough for a more pleasant visit.
Clean, professional, well-run. I adopted two cats from there. No issues whatsoever. They warned me very accurately about the allergy of one cat. The vets there are clearly competent. This humane society is a blessing to the community. Please consider adopting from this shelter before buying a new soul from pet store. We got two perfect loving pets from this place and could not ask for anything more. Shelters are overflowing with animals and you do a noble deed when adopting an already existing soul on this planet which otherwise may be forced to leave it. Staff are competent but could be a bit more friendly to children. Sometimes adults adopt pets because they want to teach their children something in life not because they do not have a child. Therefore, the staff can benefit from having a bit more empathy as to how children should "try" an animal prior to adoption.
awesome support for families needing alittle assistance for their pets during cov 19
thank you so much
I adopted my Shihtsu mix ( Charlie) almost 3 years ago and he has been absolutely perfect.
idrk how this works but i want to know if i can get a baby squirel and just like... keep it
Really nice building and a great place to visit. The interior was very clean and organized. I definitely enjoy being able to stop in every once in awhile. Once every thing lines up to add another member to the family, I will definitely be reaching out to Ottawa Humane Society to get help finding our perfect match.
My only disappointment was that there was only one already adopted dog at the location when I last went, so you can’t count on them having and dogs/puppies available at all times.
They always do their best to make all the animals feel very comfortably and cared for.
Amazing organization. They do a fantastic job of understanding the dogs in their care and matching them to homes.
They take very good care of the animals and if you can't afford to buy food for your animals, you can get some for free. And Nepean Neighbors helping Neighbors will deliver it to you if you can't pick it up.
I adore OHS and the work they do rescuing and adoring animals. Most staff are friendly and wonderful... However, there is one particular member of management that is very unpleasant to deal with at this location.
I go frequently to the establishment to socialize with the animals and scout for a potential cat I can adopt (I am allergic to some cats and cannot tell until I interact with them). This has been on-going for a year. I have attempted to adopt two cats on separate occasions but was discouraged from the same manager who happened to be present at both times. She was very rude and critical of job, as I was working at the time at a group home, and also didn’t seem to like that I was living with a roommate.
I feel her resistance in accepting my applications was likely due to the fact that I used to take some of the group home teens to OHS to interact with the animals and I don’t think she liked us very much.
Very disappointing, which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5.
They r so nice to people & I thank them and r happy they were thrre for me & my fur baby thanks so much💖
The staff really care about the furry residents. I found my forever home - Thanks, Measha.
Fantastic people, doing Great work
Great help
Love this place!!! Makes me happy to be there!!! Adopted my cat bella there and she is the best desicion i made that day!!!
We took two dogs too get them micro chipped. The best was kind and professional. The volunteers were great. It was the first time e had visited the new facilities and from what we saw and heard, they're first rate. We are now going to adopt another of their rescues.
AMAZING organization!! Excellent staff and volunteers. Excellent policies and procedures. They not only have pets in the shelter and various satellite locations (pet stores), they also have hundreds of foster homes! The shelter staff also work with private rescues when they think an animal needs more than they can provide.
OHS is also an excellent place to volunteer! I volunteered with them for a few years. Wish I didn’t live so far and my pain issues weren’t so unpredictable (calling in sick wasn’t appreciated - and I get that).
Gave up my dog, Riley for adoption a little while ago. They checked our file and informed us that he went to a good home! Which was extremely surprising because he hated all other animals and would run you off your feet trying to attack them, had really bad seperation anxiety and would spend the entire day barking when i went to work and acted agressive with almost every person that crossed his path. And wasn't house trained, we'd take him out all the time but he'd do his business inside anyways, rarely outside. And we weren't allowed any animals in the apartment. Despite all that i loved him more than anything. Anyways so we never thought he was going to get adopted. But he did and the first person to take him after me, kept him. Im so happy he found a good home. Also the gentleman clearly remembered him, and told us that every staff member fell in love with him!
So thankful for this place and for all the great work they do.
Best place to adopt an animal! The staff were very helpful and we ended up going with with a new member of the family. If you are searching for a pet I cannot recommend the humane society enough!
Due to covid I scheduled a visit to adopt a cat. They've taken very good precautions due to covid and were very helpful in answering our questions. Went home with a new cat! All my animals have come from the humane society and everytime it's obvious the employees and volunteers have a passion for what they do
They were very courteous and kind when I had to take my daughter's rabbits there. The lady listened to what had to say and seemed to care.
If you're considering a pet please visit the OHS! There are bunnies, guinea pigs, birds, reptiles, dogs, cats and of course kittens and puppies that all need loving forever homes or foster parents.
The building is really nice and updated. The areas where you can view and interact with the animals makes the experience that much more. Great for families with mindful children.
best place ever i live in quebec side and here its just not like this place and the people who works there there humain they care for animal not like quebec not the same anyway you have my respect thats for sure guys you rock love your place its friendly and most of all your CARE Billy is in good hand and i know ❤️❤️🐾🐾
Fantastic experience!
Clean facility and the staff is amazing!
Friendly staff and such a great atmosphere. The cleanliness and organization helps ensure the animals are being cared for.
In addition to adoption services, they offer seminars in animal related topics (such as pet first aid). I attended this and was very grateful for it.
Beautiful new facility that was designed with the animals in mind. I love that the dogs are viewed through windows that are at least some what sound proof. It helps reduce stress on the dogs I'm sure.
I wish I could donate more to this institution to help more animals in need.
Friendly people and place seems really well kept. From what I saw, animals have good accommodations and there was even an outdoor area for dogs to play. Lots of super cute pets so get in there and adopt if u can! Also they take donations (drop off pet supplies or online money donation).
I've adopted 2 dogs and a cat from the OHS in the past. The facility is decent for the animals. Personality assessments are often not the most thorough though, but the OHS does make sure their animals are in good health before adopting them out. You can do meet and greets with a dog you're considering and dogs you already have in your house. They don't allow this with cats though and it could be very helpful if a cat you're about the adopt can meet dogs in your house before the adoption.
I sometimes go to the OHS for events as well. I just went for the Halloweenie event. They sometimes have cool stuff at the craft sale and I loved the free photo booth.
Best place to go if you're looking to adopt. They take great care of their animals and will do their best to help find the best match for you as well as answer any questions you have. Super friendly staff. Adopted a cat with them a few months ago, she was fixed and they made sure she had a perfect bill of health before putting the adoption through. I was able to take her home on an "foster-me-first" for 2 weeks before finalizing the adoption. Also great to visit if you want to just go pet some cats!
Amazing and beautiful caring people
so loving and caring and the place is clean as can be.
I came in the middle of December so it’s not an accurate review for now and I apologize because things could of changed. During winter they need to salt their walkway because it’s ice everywhere it’s dangerous for toddlers who want to walk because they can slip.
It’s very clean and sanitary on the inside and there staff is very nice and they will try there best to make sure it’s your right pet. At the time I went I tried to get a dog but I couldn’t find any due to the low amount and that most couldn’t fit my expectations (but that’s just me, and the fact that it was near Christmas so I would t blame them too much). Overall depending on the time you go there, it will be a great experience!
The staff was professional and kind
Lots of different happy animals to choose from. Great enclosures with beds and toys to keep them entertained. They also have special rooms to meet and interact with the potential animal to adopt. The staff makes sure you interact well with the animal before you decide to bring them home. All animals are checked by a vet. The rabbit we adopted was spade before he was put for adoption. The vet check up is written down so we know what to expect medically. I was really impressed! Please consider adopting a fur baby. The Ottawa humane society really need volunteers and donations. Check out their website 😉
Mom had her kitten neutered and the staff was friendly, caring and very helpful. Never an issue with the Himane Society. Thanks for being there for our little fur baby
Staff here are super friendly. The building is also really well maintained and clean. Highly recommend adopting from here.
Great organization! It was easy to deal with and very helpful. Great if your looking to adopt a pet. Highly recommended
Wonderful staff.
They do an amazing job! They seems to take good care of all the animals and always have a smile on their faces. Adopted a dog and they were extremely helpful and let us spend lots of time with him before we took him home! The adoption process was pretty simple and we left with our new dog in the same day!
Love the OHS and their staff are all really sweet. Support them if you can!
Went there for my nieces birthday party. The staff were great and very informative. They gave us a tour of the facilities in the back and explained each room to the kids. They had a great time.
Love what they do! Such an amazing organization. Highly recommend getting a dog or cat from this place not only are you saving an animals life but they also come with up to date shots and are always fixed!
Despite the constant flow of people and animals who come streaming endlessly through their doors, the staff at OHS are always on their feet ready to help at a moments notice. It's certainly controlled chaos, but the keyword here is controlled. After we waited in line for roughly 15 minutes (it was very busy), we were greeted with a smile and a pleasant encounter, and weren't dismissed until all of our questions were answered with complete transparency. A very good experience. When my wife and I decide to adopt a cat, this will be the location we trust.
Adoption process was fast, efficient, and smooth. Then my dog Bear and I decided to join Robyn for dog obedience classes. Bear is already a great listener, but I wanted to be able to challenge him further and Robyn has helped a lot in this process. She works amazingly well with my dog, and she has shown me various strategies for training him. Thank you to OHS and its team.
This is a great facility, welcoming to humans and animals alike. I visited to drop off a donation of old sheets and towels. The donation was graciously received. Visitors are welcome to walk around the facility. There is a small store that sells pet supplies (and mugs) at reasonable prices. The staff was available to answer my questions and referred me to their website for more information about volunteer opportunities and summer camps for kids.
Thank you for providing care to these animals, our community is grateful for all you do. I look forward to continuing to participate in upcoming fundraising opportunities. . All the best- Marla.
Kids love coming here to pet the cats, see the dogs and other furry creatures. Great way to spend a few hours. Only downside is you want to adopt every single animal, but can't afford to.
I must agree with some of the comments. The staff behind the counter seem distant.
You have to work at starting a conversation. Not sure why that is. I would think an upbeat and positive atmosphere towards visitors would be in their best interest.
I make a generous donation when I can. I do not need the OHS to mail me expensive inserts asking me to do so.
In any event, I would not hold the animals accountable for the actions of some of the staff, but I do think, considering the poor ratings on this Google site, some fine tuning is required at the facility. Hopefully they will realize this sooner than later.
They do a great job for the pet community. Also love their facility, being able to wander and visit so many dogs and cats. Keep up the great work!
Love the building and the services provided. Highly recommend a visit if you're looking for a companion animal!
Caring Staff Who Put Animal Welfare First
Whenever I get service to my car at the Nissan dealership, I walk over and look at all the animals. Yesterday was different, I found a shelter dog that we can really help who will be a great fit with our lives. The staff spent time talking with me about her special needs. It is always an upbeat environment there. They care deeply about the animals and give terrific education to the public.
Amazing work done here! They treat all the animals wonderfully and have a very thorough adoption process to make sure the animal will be placed in the best possible home. I've gotten a cat and a dog from them and it was the best choice I could have ever made. Their day camp for kids is also fantastic, and fun. Everyone should stop in for a visit, and to pet the cats!
As a former employee and an adopter, I can tell you the staff go above and beyond what you would expect for the animals. Animal medical and psychological needs are well met by staff and volunteers. Ottawa is very lucky to have this beautiful facility to care for our homeless animals.
Well run and caring. Building is clean and modern. Shop has all pet essentials, as well as toys. We adopted 2 kittens and were really impressed with the kindness and attention of the staff. Left with a file on each as detailed as those we receive from the vet.
They took good carecof my 20 year old cat
